Will everyone please STOP the extremely tone deaf 'Christmas Fridge' threads

I see these multiple threads every single year and they drive me bonkers. The four days leading up to Christmas Day my feed is inundated with all the stuffed fridges, it's a complete and utter disgrace. Not just a few posters but sometimes literally hundreds of you all joining in with these enormous overflowing fridges, it's barbaric and in incredibly poor taste. I have already seen THREE seperate fridge threads today alone, it's scandalous... please people just think about what you are doing by jumping on this bandwagon. Now I take this a bit personally and here is why.... There are people in this world who are starving and many families, mine included, are having to rely on food banks this year just to keep our children fed. As in dippy eggs and soldiers on Xmas eve. Many of us are in a dire state with finances and the pressures of Xmas. The fridge threads are incredibly upsetting and triggering. By all means have a nice christmas dinner with all the trimmings but why post it and rub it in the faces of those less fortunate? They will be very lucky to scrape together a very basic dinner for the family this year?

I so look forward to seeing everybody's gluttonous greed in full swing, fridges stuffed full of obscene amounts of food and alcohol that will most likely go to waste. (And waistlines. The greed of Christmas it's all totally out of control and I despair)
All the cheese boards, cheesecakes, cheeselets, and on and on and on.
Honestly I wish MNHQ would BAN the threads, they cause many people anguish and distress.
It is one day so please keep some perspective or even better, pop a selection pack or some small treats in a collection trolley to help all the fantastic homeless charities and food banks ensure more people can enjoy a sweet treat on christmas day.

(Thanks to my local foodbank and those who kindly donated, at least me and my children have a lovely box of celebrations that I will bring out on Christmas Day for us) 🙂

They do. Also people saying they will be back later this week to update their bulging fridges after the 'big shop'.

Also I am now personally being insulted on one of the fridge threads. My very point proven that these sort of people have no consideration for those less fortunate.

I’m personally sorry, I can’t help you, if you lived locallly, I could give you a supermarket voucher to let you choose your Xmas lunch.

Glitchymn1 · 22/12/2025 04:47

YANBU in the gluttony and waste that goes on, that’s a given. People eat too much and waste a ton of money. Ultra processed shit.

But YABU in that you open the threads, you can see the topic and don’t need to read them. I’d hide them for my own sanity, mn has a ton of topics.

I sympathise with your situation and sincerely hope you enjoy your Christmas, play games with your children and make memories. It’s not all about over indulgence. You can see the threads where people have lost loved ones, are unhappy with travelling, ungratefulness, selfishness, abuse..

isthismylifenow · 22/12/2025 04:50

Honestly OP, what an overreaction.

If you have been here any length of time, you will know that the Christmas fridge threads are very normal every single year. Along with advent calendar opening threads.

Some of those calenders are eye wateringly expensive.

I cannot take part in these, but I enjoy seeing what other people were able to open. It is the same with the fridges. Mine isn't bulging and full of treats, but I don't take offence because mine is not the same.

Maybe you should consider doing the same. Or step away. As you sound like you have a very big chip on your shoulder.

@TempNameForObviousReasons I have been reliant on food banks on the past, and I can empathise with you. However, having full fridge isn’t necessarily greedy. You don’t know how many people that fridge will be feeding, or over how many days.
As a past food bank user, every year I donate six £50 supermarket vouchers to my local school to give to families in need, because my circumstances changed for the better. We volunteer at the food bank and regularly donate and collect from others. Next week I will be collecting sealed food gifts people don’t want to take to the food bank, just as I am aiming to tomorrow for those who have already been given tubs of chocolates and biscuits.
Not everyone is greedy, or selfish. Lots of people will be doing a lot of work to support people less fortunate and some of those will also be curious about other people’s fridges.
Equally no one should be attacking you personally - but when you call people greedy, and use capital letters for GREED, it will attract name calling back. I hope you have a peaceful Christmas.

A lot of vouchers, I give monthly, and add bits to my Lidl, giving box to folk in need.
i would gladly give anyone a roast dinner from my roast chicken lunch on Xmas day too

ThePerfectWeekend · 22/12/2025 04:56

You don't know anything, that's my main issue with your OP. You are nasty, but God forbid anyone turn that mirror back on you.
I wouldn't post a photo of my fridge or open a post on the 'groaning' ones. A full fridge at Christmas says nothing about its owner.
Take mine for example...There's a full leg of lamb, loin of pork and turkey crown in there. All of them were bought fresh and frozen over a period of weeks. This was not only because they were on offer, but it spread the cost over a long period.
There are four adults who normally live in my home. At Christmas DD is home from university and six others will be joining us, hence the need for more, not because we'll stuff ourselves senseless, apart from some sweets and homemade cake.
There will be zero food waste. Left overs will be turned into curry, cottage, pie, stew, etc. and eaten in the following days or frozen.
There will always be others with more or less than you. Instead of counting your blessings (I can't eat, am fed via a tube, and have a life limiting condition, just being here is not a given), thanking those who donated to the foodbanks, you shit all over someone else. There's some of us who are far worse off than you. We don't choose to take it out on others and piss all over their Christmas. Or does only your position count?

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/12/2025 04:57

So don't look - people showing off their groaning fridge are not hiding these photos in innocuous looking threads to ambush you, they're titling their threads 'LOOK AT MY STUFFED FRIDGE' or similar.

I've been both sides of this - on the bones of my arse, christmas for me and my dog reminiscient of Wellington and Boot in the old Perishers cartoons - just a couple of sausages and a mince pie and then the dog snaffled the sausages.

And now I can afford to have what I like in the fridge.

I literally do not care what other people buy, eat, how many they're feeding... I like a nosey at what they found but beyond that it's really not a big deal. When I was absolutely brassic I didn't go looking at pics of other peoples fridges (or nosying in them, looking at pics would have been unlikely since it was pre the era of posting photos online or social media), I certainly didn't sit around moaning that other people had more than me as it doesn't make you feel any better!

Walkden · 22/12/2025 05:02

"And I will be reporting individuals who have been really unnecessarily rude to me when all I am doing is trying to raise awareness of food banks and the gluttony."

That's not really true though is it OP?

You have been lecturing others, been sanctimonious and judgemental and offended many people and now want the thread pulled because some of those people are calling it out and lashing out at you in response.

If you are going to raise awareness about gluttony perhaps you should also do so for envy?

JMSA · 22/12/2025 05:04

”People are so greedy and don’t consider those less fortunate”

What an unfair generalisation to make. You have a massive chip on your shoulder and would do well to avoid the very obviously titled threads.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 22/12/2025 05:06

Im sorry you’re struggling OP however you are being unseasonable.

Christmas Day for most is having lovely food surround by their loved ones, for most people fridges are full because there is more
people to feed.

There will always be someone worst off in the world, that’s life, how you choose to deal with that is for you to choose.

You can’t dictate what posters can and cannot post, you’re also rudely judging others by making rude and insulting derogatory belligerent remarks and then trying to play “victim” when people respond to your rude posts, real life doesn’t work like this!

EleanorReally · 22/12/2025 05:13

there is a hide button

Snorlaxo · 22/12/2025 05:18

By your logic, nothing would be posted here.

People in relationships could upset people who are single.

People with children could upset people with fertility issues.

People with homes could upset people who are in temporary housing or homeless.

People posting threads on here could upset people without a gadget to post online or the time to do so.

etc

Some posts on here are not for me. I don’t have £1000 for a new peace of jewellery and I won’t be buying a million pound house either. The people who purchase these things aren’t trying to spite me, it’s just different lives for different people.

🤔

Interesting...

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 22/12/2025 05:25

I’ve just had a look at the threads, there is less than 100 posts for all 3 threads and only about 6 or 7 photos of fridges.

I personally love the fridge threads.

Augustus40 · 22/12/2025 05:28

There is just me and ds and I won £50 Asda rewards. We aren't starving but it has definitely helped our
Xmas.

Here we go for those who are saying they haven't seen any of these awful threads. How to upset those less fortunate at Christmas? SHARE YOUR GREED

So now you're sharing something you say actively upsets you? I've had some bloody awful Christmases, 4 years ago the worst ever after my partner had a stroke and we had nothing. I work hard and care for him and I lost my last remaining parent this year. I had multiple poor Christmases as a child. No one is going to shame or call me greedy because I've made sure we will have a plentiful Christmas. Whilst I might not be showing the contents of my fridge I really resent your "GREED" comments. Don't like it, you can choose not to click, read and certainly choose not to share the links.

I haven't commented on them at all.

I am being insulted because of this thread I have started. People just don't get it why I and others in my situation are so upset and annoyed by it all. Every single year.

Youve contradicted yourself here. You said you haven't commented at all on those posts, yet you've been insulted on them. How??

LilyBunch25 · 22/12/2025 05:46

TempNameForObviousReasons · 21/12/2025 22:30

I did NOT go onto the Christmas topic.
All three have been in active as soon as I log onto Mumsnet. And I am sure there will be many more over the next 4 days.

There is a hide button literally next to every thread 🙄 it's not difficult.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 22/12/2025 05:48

* I am going to be asking MNHQ to delete this threaad as I am getting all upset now with how cruel people are being to me on both this thread and the fridge ones themselves.*

You've had some curt responses on this thread however I’ve read all 3 of the fridge threads and most of this thread and not one person has been cruel.

On the fridge threads there is only 2 posts that mentioned this thread and its was to say if you hadn’t had posted this thread they wouldn’t have known the fridge threads even existed!

It was on the 1st thread you linked, the other 2 you’ve not even been mentioned.

The only issue I have with the fridge threads is how tidy and organised people's fridges are.

I am sorry @TempNameForObviousReasons if you are having a difficult time financially. Perhaps start a thread in the money section and see if anyone can help and support.

The fridges don't bother me, I appreciate people are catering for bigger than usual numbers and the fridges will soon be empty.

The threads about stupendous numbers of presents do, particularly when lists of tat and landfill are posted. That strikes me as gratuitous excess with not a thought about the reasons for christmas.

Cleaning the fridge is my number one job today. There won't be oodles of food landing because our mothers are 89 and too frail to travel and 340 miles apart. DH will spend Christmas with his and watch her eat her Wiltshire foods Christmas dinner having given the carers the day off; I'll be with mine. We will have Christmas together again when one of them is dead. It's rather miserable but it doesn't make me resent all the people having lovely, jolly, family christmases.
