For fuck’s sake - I cannot take this anymore

I live in a small house with DH and two DC. The constant stream of crap into our house completely overwhelms me. DH insists on buying absolutely rubbish toys and comics constantly for the kids that we can’t afford, along with the inevitable plastic tat (or yet another pack of small pencils, even though we have tons of pencils already). A week after they come into the house I chuck it all into the bin and the DC don’t even notice. It disgusts me that our house has basically become an intermediary stop for a load of plastic tat between shop and landfill. I’ve told DH not to do this but he doesn’t stop. I’ve had enough and am at my wits end. I want to have a few mindful toys that are good quality, not this constant stream of plastic crap. How can I force him to stop?

Show the approximate cost of everything he has bought that year and get him a library card - mine flipping loved the library. We also used charity shops if they really wanted some tat - 5 items for £1 from a little basked. Then it go donated back there.

Is he just carrying on buying it because you keep throwing it all away?

If you didn't chuck it away then would be less likely to 'replace' it? Do the kids actually get any enjoyment out of the things?

Stop throwing it away. Stop cleaning & tidying, too. Let the crap pile up on every surface in every room. Eventually your DH will realise it's rubbish and stop buying it. He can't see it now because you keep cleaning up after him.

I’ve seen this advice before on MN and it just doesn’t work. All that happens is you get increasingly stressed and anxious over the mess; it has a detrimental effect on your state of mind while your DH carries on regardless. Ask me how I know …

If DH has his own car, bag it up & stick it in his boot or back of the car & don't let it back in the house & if it creeps back, keep putting it back in the car. If it impacts the children being in the car etc he'll get rid & it might eventually curb his compulsive tat buying. I got the idea from DD whose ex used to leave cans, bottles, fag packets, gum wrappers & all kinds of crap littered about which she put in his car so I adopted it for my partner. In my experience men can be very precious about their cars, much more so than having a tidy home.

I'm totally with you on this - especially if it's cutting into family finances. There are so many better things to be spending money on for the kids.

For those saying "charity shop the toys"... These

are the sort of things that you get on the front of magazines. What charity shop could be dealing with all those little bits. Even if you had all the parts that came with the teaset it's about the size of a 10p coin and the paint your own doll would be worthless if someone had started it. They're cheap crap that migrates everywhere in the house and doesn't get repeat playing. It's teaching an easy-come easy-go attitude to just having shiny "stuff"
