Scratchcard Win

MissLead · 21/12/2025 15:19

So yesterday we had our annual pre-Xmas family meal (my brother, sister partners and kids).

every year we have done this I’ve bought everyone a scratchcard as a bit of fun.

BIL won £50k on his card yesterday and is not going to share it!

I think he should!!!!

Why? Does nobody have any grace left? I'd be delighted if a card I bought won someone something!

If it was one of my children, or my parents, I’d be delighted for them but if it was my BIL or a friend, I would be jealous and wish that I had kept that card for myself. I know it sounds awful.

DryIce · 21/12/2025 19:57

I don't feel a winner is beholden to share. It might be a nice gesture, sure, but if you've given the card as a gift it feels quite unreasonable to expect a share of winnings - the gift is surely the chance of winning something, otherwise aren't you just giving them a blank card?

TrickyD · 21/12/2025 20:07

I am glad I read this thread. There will be 11 of us for Christmas dinner and I was considering buying scratch cards to go with the cheap crackers.
I will now not do this.

Absolutely

Ha! Of course you would. 😉

HardworkSendHelp · 21/12/2025 20:19

I would never have publicly scratched the card tbh. But it is BIL money to keep.

Absolutely

Of course 😁

EagerLemur · 21/12/2025 20:28

Should buy them, scratch off the cards 1st, then claim the prize, wrap the cards still or put chalk pen on, then let everyone lucky dip, and surprise the winning one when picked you can tell everyone's it's been claimed and will be shared between you all, I'd be gutted is someone won 5k from a scratch card I purchased, 50k is life changing, splitting it between the family is not

RosePetals86 · 21/12/2025 20:30

ahh I’d be gutted too op but realistically he does to have to as nothing was pre agreed…I’d never buy someone a scratch card or lottery ticket for this reason.!

Elmspringwater · 21/12/2025 20:32

MissLead · 21/12/2025 18:33

Well you lot are nice (not).

Lol.

Bundleflower · 21/12/2025 20:34

I would share the unexpected windfall as, morally, I’d want to share the good fortune. However it’s completely at his discretion and you can’t police what he does. I’d hope he contributed more than just the gravy granules this Christmas Day, though.

Fridgemanageress · 21/12/2025 20:35

Years ago, there would be rows/falling out about sharing bingo wins,

if you didn’t say it has to be split x amount if ways, then you have given a gift.

Bundleflower · 21/12/2025 20:35

Namechange2211 · 21/12/2025 19:23

I don’t believe this anyway

Why not? My Mum once won £70k in fairly similar circumstances. It happens!

PatriciaRocks · 21/12/2025 20:36

This reminds me of the Friends episode where they all fell out over the lottery tickets!
Recipe for disaster....

Just don’t believe it. To many trolls on here.

In any case if her brother actually has won 50k. Good luck to him then.

dontbeataboutthebush · 21/12/2025 20:38

Gutted for you. I would like to think people would share that amount. I always put scratch cards in our Christmas crackers and can’t see anyone in our family not sharing that amount. Guess it brings out the worst in people.

Artificialhens · 21/12/2025 20:41

So the card is a gift, unless it wins.

If it doesn’t win, if it’s worthless; if it wins, the donor wants it back.

Purplewarrior · 21/12/2025 20:42

YABVU.

You gave it to him!

PodMom · 21/12/2025 20:44

So do you think he should split it 50/50 with you? Or share between all adults? Because if the latter everyone gets less than 10k? Maybe he wants to pay the mortgage off?

Wonderwall23 · 21/12/2025 20:46

I'm really shocked at these responses.

I agree it belongs to BIL in theory but he has to have some nerve to just keep it all. I can't imagine sitting across the table from my BIL and him doing this to me. And I certainly wouldn't do it to one of my family.

MeouwKing · 21/12/2025 20:46

Let's hope he at least picked up the tab for the meal..

Not thinking he's going to win 50k though-I mean what are the chances? Just look at all the people who probably buy handfuls of scratch cards every week for years desperately trying to win just a few hundred and this guy just accidentally wins 50k when he didn't even buy the scratch card!

Having said that, giving scratch cards is a really bad idea imo.

That's why it's a pretty shit gift. 99% of the time, it isn't even a gift because you don't get anything and the odd time that you do, the person wants their gift back.

MermaidMummy06 · 21/12/2025 20:57

I'd never heard of sharing scratch card wins until MIL gave me some & then seriously laid down the rules about sharing wins. 😂 My plan was to just slip it in my pocket & say I hadn't won / won a small amount. Sadly didn't need to enact my plan.

It sounds awful, but I'd have kept quiet. 50k would relieve a lot of financial pressure & buy us a bit of freedom. If you announce, you should share, otherwise causes bad feeling.

I never buy scratchies for others as it's be too awkward if they won. I don't know anyone who'd willingly share.

What did you expect the ‘bit of fun’ to be ? If it was everyone sharing the ‘pot’ of winnings then you should have made that clear at the beginning.

The Mum of one of my ex-team members always gave a lift to her NDN to Bingo every week and they agreed anything over £50 would be shared. Fast forward to the night when the neighbour won the ‘National’ pot. We’re talking about £250,000 plus.

My team member asked her Mum if she thought ‘NDN’ would keep to the agreement and share. Her Mum said it would be lovely but it wouldn’t make any difference to their relationship if she didn’t and they would still go to Bingo every week and have a good time which was what it was all about.

Team member’s Dad got hauled into the Bank Manager’s office when he tried to pay the six figure cheque ‘NDN’ gave his wife. Cross questioned about money laundering 😂

They carried on going to Bingo together 😊
