To be sad that I’ve wasted £17 on a bottle of Bailey’s?

GrumpyOldWoman2 · 20/12/2025 21:54

Bought a bottle of the chocolate Bailey’s today thinking it would cleanse my memory of downing a pint of Irish Cream when I was 14 (it was the only thing my parents had and I wanted to get smashed Grin) and throwing up everywhere. It did not. It still tastes like the original with a weird, very mildly chocolate aftertaste. I really wanted to like it as I’m a big fan of sweet liqueurs. Everyone else seems to adore it. I just can’t get past that horrid boozy taste!

Think I’ll give it to DPs instead.

Where can you buy that one please?

Aldi's, Ballycastle Chocolate, Clementine is nicer, it's around £6.

Put some tia Maria in a glass and then carefully pour some baileys on top. It’s called a Baby Guinness. But why didn’t you just buy a miniature?

Edited

Oooh that sounds nice - I have an ancient bottle of Tia Maria in the cupboard.

Quamarina · 21/12/2025 18:24

If I even sniff baileys I’m ill, ghost of hangovers past but I do remember that most of the supermarket versions are softer & don’t have such a whisky aftertaste (the less expensive ones have wine blended in I think).

but there’s so many uses for it beyond drinking it neat, it’s great in a chocolate trifle to soak the sponge instead of using sherry, lovely in hot chocolate, a glug in coffee, I used to stir a bit into porridge for a quick hybrid dinner-desert on weekends when I couldn’t be bothered to cook a real meal (not great for breakfast probably). It keeps for ages in a dark cupboard once open. I used to mix it with tia Maria, there’s loads of cocktails you can make with it, one of my friends blends it with cream & adds hazelnut syrup which she swears is lovely

Coole Swan is the way forward OP!

Two Stacks is miles nicer

Add milk to it! Longer and fresher.

This! Takes away the harsh whisky burn and makes it so much nicer 😋

I don't like Bailey's it's grim, but I tried m&s chocolate and cherry cream liqueur this week, it was everything you hope Bailey's will be. They also do a tiramisu flavour but I've not tried that yet

EXCUSE ME??? Why am I only hearing about this chocolate cherry cream concoction NOW?? When I’m not planning on going to a Marks?? Livid, Christmas is ruined 😭

FrogSplash · 21/12/2025 18:50

You should have gone to Sainsbury’s for the Cinnamon Bun Baileys. It’s epic.

Catwoman8 · 21/12/2025 18:57

My husband cannot stomach baileys after being sick as a dog from it when he was younger. We always buy the Aldi Ballycastle flavoured ones now, we have had the white chocolate, clementine and hazelnut flavours. They are all really nice and good value.

Has anyone tried the Hotel Chocolat Chocolate Cream? Was it nice?

It was disgusting tasted of vomit

Shufflebumnessie · 21/12/2025 19:03

I honestly don't understand the hype surrounding it. I find it has a chemical/acrid taste & leaves my mouth furry.
I'd much rather have a glass of ice cold prosecco.

The Hotel Chocolat one is gorgeous.

You can use the Baileys take an espresso martini. Or a no churn ice ceam.

I do this too

I love the taste of baileys etc but not the alcoholic taste part - I get round this by having it with loads of ice and letting it sit for 5 mins, so that it gets watered down slightly. And it’s nicer served chilled as well I think. X

Absolutely has to be drunk poured over lots of lge ice cubes.
Add to whipped cream for any dessert.
Use in a cheesecake
Make a Baby Guiness
Add to a latte or a hot chocolate
But my absolute favourite is a shot made with Chambord (a raspberry liquer), then Baileys and then topped with whipped cream. OMFG, I would drink them all day long.

Moonmelodies · 21/12/2025 20:01

It's surprising they don't do an alcohol-free Bailey's.

OneBadKitty · 21/12/2025 20:08

Original Baileys is lovely- tastes as it always has to me, not noticed any recipe changes. Always serve really chilled (even from the freezer) but without ice for the best taste experience- ice dilutes it! Hotel Chocolat is Ok but nothing special. I used to love Dooleys Chocolate Vodka but not seen that for ages!

Has anyone tried the Hotel Chocolat Chocolate Cream? Was it nice?

@GrumpyOldWoman2 yes, we liked it more than the Baileys Chocolate.

purely for scientific purposes me and the (adult) children have tried many different varieties of Baileys
Tiramisu - 9/10
luxe Chocolate 6/10 - Hotel
Chocolat one is nicer
Chocolate 5/10
Birthday Cake 6/10 - too sweet
Cinnamon bun - 5/10 very strong cinnamon aroma, definitely tastes like an alcoholic cinnamon bun
Eton Mess / Strawberries and cream 6/10 like a strawberry crème from a box of Roses
espresso crème 9/10
toffee popcorn yet to try
terry’s chocolate orange yet to try

plain Baileys is still a strong contender 9/10

Sartre · 21/12/2025 21:01

I got some last year to add to my hot chocolate on Christmas Eve. Everyone bleats on about it being delicious. It was not, it tasted like I’d added vodka to it. I had to make a fresh booze free one. Gave it to my mum.

DrCoconut · 21/12/2025 23:10

Vile stuff. Anything remotely whisky like makes me feel ill. I had a bad experience when I was a lot younger.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/12/2025 00:01

#tenner

NextDG · 22/12/2025 00:05

Ya Abu to drink Baileys when
you could be drinking Krupnik hazelnut liqueur or the King’s ginger .

Orwellwasright2020 · 22/12/2025 01:05

This brings back the warm Malibu with no mixer incident of 1988. I have tried to forget. 😶

toomuchcrapeverywhere · 22/12/2025 02:23

I make my own.

My daughter put me on to this. Love it!

cockandbullstories · 22/12/2025 10:12

Ballycastle from Aldi - all flavours. Not as thick as Baileys but lovely!
