I just wish people would stop sending me Christmas cards

They're pointless, wasteful and a poor form of communication. All I do is read the "Happy Christmas from Joe and Julie" and walk them to the recycling.

I haven't sent any for over 25 years and I just don't see the need for them at all.

I love getting Christmas cards, and sending them. I like birthday cards too, and 'thinking about you' cards (I had cancer and got a few lovely cards from people). They aren't dying out here - and there are 3 cards shops in my high street, always busy.

Just miserable and tight maybe, cupboards probs groaning with M&S mincepies but cba to wish others a Merry Christmas Xmas Grin

eggandonion · 20/12/2025 19:47

I don't live in the UK so Im not really able to answer the specifics on Waitrose Asda and National Trust. I seem to have several with deer on them this year...little fawns up to big stags. Not reindeer. But no hedgehogs.

eggandonion · 20/12/2025 19:36

Op mentioned that ones like 'To dear mum at Christmas ' are working class.
I have a spare 'son and daughter in law' if anyone needs it. Because I found 'Christmas greetings to your cockapoo' which will thrill that household.

The ones who have who it’s to on the front? Well I had no idea that was working class! Thats so funny.

Sounds pretty middle class to me!

Quite possibly. I would quite like an M&S mince pie though’

Oh I love a little fawn and a hedgehog. Bit of glitter too though that cocks up the recycling they don't like glitter.

Because from their pov, they were letting you know they were thinking of you and chose a nice (im assuming nice design?) for you to read, feel special and then put up if you desire. Poor people probably thought it made you happy.

I don't find reading a card signed with just their names makes me feel special (or think they were thinking of me)? I mean they could have written it any time in the last year as one of a huge batch and then just added names and addresses on the front. In fact I imagine that's what they did – it's just a pointless chore.

Yes I do like a mince pie just along with a glittery hedgehog card 😍

Roobarbtwo · 20/12/2025 19:39

She said that to me - but that's not how I write my Christmas cards. A few assumptions going on there I think. Apparently it's not the done thing to give cards to people you actually see at Christmas. Never knew that either

You feel free to give cards to people you see. I find that odd but you're not giving them to me :)

I think youre missing the point.

PickledMuffin · 20/12/2025 19:53

I don’t send them but appreciate that people
take the trouble to write them and send them to me.

Namechange2211 · 20/12/2025 19:54

I moved house 2 years ago and no one asked for my new address. I’m guessing i won’t get any except from my kids. Maybe that’s an idea for you?

HaveaVeryMerryBerryChristmas · 20/12/2025 19:55

I give individual cards to dh, the dcs and dm, we send 2 in the post to elderly relatives and that's it. I only give neighbours one if they give us one (and hope they don't). They're definately dying out now. Sometimes dc will write odd couple of small ones out for his friends.

eggandonion · 20/12/2025 19:56

I use the glitter ones for cheerful shopping lists...things like icing sugar and birthday candles. I only have one with glitter this year so far.
I like a corporate card especially if big and shiny. We used to get a fabulous one from a local politician because my son did work experience in his office.

clary · 20/12/2025 19:56

What is the point @Lelophants ?

I don't think they are thinking of us. They (or the wife of course) is just doing a piece of Christmas wifework that for me, she can totally drop. Give us a ring and arrange to meet up. Much better. Meaningless card - no thanks.

SerafinasGoose · 20/12/2025 20:04

I still get one for the former owner of my house. We’ve been here 16 years and she’s been dead for five.

if people care enough to send Christmas cards
they should surely at least know whether the recipient is still in the realm of the living - otherwise why bother?

I’m with you, OP.

cardibach · 20/12/2025 20:09

Lelophants · 20/12/2025 19:05

Because someone has made an effort to send you something and you dont care/havnt made use of it. And it would upset them if they knew? It was more to those who dont even read them which is really rude.

I’m not either of the people involved here so far but - no, I don’t feel guilty. They wanted to send a card and presumably got something out of that (people here are certainly saying they send them because they enjoy doing it). I don’t like them so I throw them away, having noted who they were from. The people sending them don’t know. It doesn’t affect them at all.

Roobarbtwo · 20/12/2025 20:11

I get it now :) if you send a card with "dear mum" on the front - you're working class.

I've never sent my mum a card like that in my life :)

As I said before sometimes I put gift cards or money inside the card.

cardibach · 20/12/2025 20:16

Gloriia · 20/12/2025 19:42

I quite like them. Folk spend a fortune stuffing their faces at Christmas I think it's quite nice to donate to charity by buying cards and wishing others well. It's a nice thing to do specially for older people who don't do whatsapp group chats.

I don’t ’stuff my face’ at Christmas or otherwise. What a horrible turn of phrase that is. I enjoy a carefully cooked meal with friends and/or relatives.
Cards are just pointless.

The last thing I am is posh - someone made a dig at me earlier in the thread calling me working class and suggesting that I sent cards like that because I give my mum a card at Christmas, I'm very working class. I just don't like assumptions being made about me because I send a card to my mum every year
