I just wish people would stop sending me Christmas cards

They're pointless, wasteful and a poor form of communication. All I do is read the "Happy Christmas from Joe and Julie" and walk them to the recycling.

I haven't sent any for over 25 years and I just don't see the need for them at all.

“I’m annoyed people think of me and spend time to do something nice for me”.

If people thought about me, they'd know that I don't like clutter or random stuff. They'd remember that I don't like unnecessary spending, when there's so much poverty about and I do what I can for the environment. If they want to do something nice, a funny meme or Gif will do, or we could actually phone each other, or even more radical, visit/meet up etc.

PashaMinaMio · 20/12/2025 17:35

I love to receive a card but I don’t send cards, I stopped that years ago.

I always text a thank you and tell the sender I’ve used card and stamp money to donate to charity.

This year it’s Refuge, for women fleeing domestic violence. Too many women lose their lives behind closed doors every year that we never hear about.
https://donate.refuge.org.uk/page/179334/donate/1?ea.tracking.id=GEN_PAID_GPPC_DON&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23054284514&gbraid=0AAAAACMybazeugY9MIjniZGJ6SiAK2TOl&gclid=Cj0KCQiAr5nKBhCpARIsACa_NiMjam06nopCCcp5gUoo2oiqcgGhCNwqzv5z7yIeUT2J4VpE-6lAkcQaAr_FEALw_wcB

I also ask them to keep me on their list, if they’d like to. They all do and I get lots of cards.

bridgetreilly · 20/12/2025 17:35

Well aren’t you just the Christmas joy fairy?

I haven’t sent any for years because of the faff and expense, but I am still very glad to get them from anyone who still chooses to send them.

PuppyMonkey · 20/12/2025 17:43

You’ve just reminded me I’ve got a couple in my bag from work colleagues who I sit beside in the office every day but insist I need a card from them.

Why are you not sending joy?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 20/12/2025 17:45

I restarted sending cards this year, I'm always happy to receive one but was to lazy to return the thought.

iCod · 20/12/2025 17:46

People saying that they're nice they're just not nice. It's a piece of paper with one sentence written on it.

iCod · 20/12/2025 17:47

Anyone is grateful for a card like that needs to have a word with themselves. Most texts are longer than one of those.

OP posts:
Sesma · 20/12/2025 17:47

Do people really text and speak to these people that they would have sent cards to, I don't

iCod · 20/12/2025 17:48

JifNtGif · 20/12/2025 16:56

I have a feeling you will have a disturbed night's sleep on Christmas eve...

Why? Are you popping over with a bag of cards?

OP posts:
iCod · 20/12/2025 17:48

No @Sesma I think they don't, and that's the issue, isn't it?
When I decided to stop doing them, I wondered if I would fall out of touch with people but I never did. I work hard at friendships- seeing people, phoning them looking after them, et cetera.

I understand preferring not to receive them but not the strength of feeling you have. So not everything is your thing - just accept with grace put it in the bin if you must. Waste wise - it's just a few cards. I'm sure if most of us reviewed our waste for the year (be that financial or physical), Christmas cards would feature very low.

But multiply that by tens of millions

Thedogscollar · 20/12/2025 17:53

Bah Humbug

Yabu. I love Christmas cards, why aren't you putting them up as decorations? They make the house look festive. I like to hear from people at Christmas.

IME They make my house look messy, nice if you like hearing from people though

Paper can be recycled

Yes Of course I am aware of that but why waste resources to produce it initially. Recycling does not counteract that

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 17:56

@iCod totally with you. Waste of space, time, money and resources and totally pointless and a money spinner for some

Roobarbtwo · 20/12/2025 17:57

iCod · 20/12/2025 17:47

I don't need to have a word with myself. I only send three cards - and the ones that send me them I send back.

People can enjoy receiving cards for lots of reasons - if they are housebound (which I was last year) and for many other reasons

I actually went to get my mum and brother a Christmas card - a specific kind from a shop in my home town. Sold out

Your opinion is completely fine - for you. But I don't need to have a word with myself because I send and receive a very small number of cards

Sesma · 20/12/2025 17:47

Why would you send a card to someone you don't text or speak to?

Either the person is important enough to you that you will keep in touch, or they are not that important, in which case sending why are you sending them a card once a year?

PurpleThistle7 · 20/12/2025 17:58

I love sending and receiving them. Am sure you will eventually get none - it’s definitely coming to an end of the tradition

I like to hear from people all the time. Doesn’t mean I want a card. And no, I don’t think they look festive. They fall over all the time and I don’t have anywhere to put them anyway.
I haven’t sent any for over a decade. Some people just keep sending them.

It’s not nice if they know she doesn’t want them though.

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 17:55

The same way people produce birthday or any other kind of cards. People buy soft plastic on a regular basis and there aren't always facilities to recycle that. I try and recycle as much waste as possible - but I'm not going to beat myself up for buying three Christmas cards once a year

ACynicalDad · 20/12/2025 18:01

Our kids have continently timed birthdays so people get two thank you cards, a Christmas card and maybe even a Christmas present in one package. Only send about 5 that are just a card and they are family fronds of parent’s generation. I think we’re more on under 15, was 40-50 teen years ago. They are dying.

iCod · 20/12/2025 18:02

Getting them for family you're seeing EVEN ODDER
