Do you think the person who made this cake is a complete amateur?

Just that really. Curious as I got a funny comment.

Not a serious post at all. My feelings won’t be hurt. In full transparency the buttercream did not have time to set. Lunch was earlier than planned so the buttercream wasn’t entirely firm. Still tasted good. Sponges weren’t slipping apart of anything.

Made in an air BnB without piping bags, mixer etc.

I wouldn’t pay for it. But if brought to a family or friends event would happily try it and only care about the taste.

Flowerslamp · 18/12/2025 17:43

It looks like a very nice homemade cake to me, not professionally made, so yes amateur, but that's not a bad thing.

Melloplan · 18/12/2025 17:43

I’ll also say this is the crap side. We gave the birthday girl the “good” side 😂

Well, it doesn't look like a professionally made cake. But it does look like a lovely home baked cake. I'd be very happy if someone made me that for my birthday.

Everydayimhuffling · 18/12/2025 17:44

It looks homemade, but I like that. Looks tasty!

justpassmethemouse · 18/12/2025 17:44

Not a complete amateur as the cake is solid! Plus it looks delicious.

McSpoot · 18/12/2025 17:44

I assume that you are an amateur? Looks perfectly fine for something a friend brought around.

maslinpan · 18/12/2025 17:44

It's obviously a home made cake, but the sponge has a good rise and I would definitely have a big slice of you are offering!

Clefable · 18/12/2025 17:44

I think it looks great and just the type of homemade cake I would enjoy!

RoseyLentil · 18/12/2025 17:44

It looks yummy. It’s homemade cake 🍰 always the best sort of cake imho 🥰

Sherunswithwolves · 18/12/2025 17:44

It looks lovely and if it tasted nice, that's all that matters.

Melloplan · 18/12/2025 17:44

Okay maybe amateur isn’t the right word but complete novice

TheTowerAtMidnight · 18/12/2025 17:44

Yes. A professional would have ensured consistent raspberry placement.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 18/12/2025 17:45

I am very very amateur and reckon I could give that a go.

If this isn't to your usual standard, like you say, you're in an Airbnb without your usual equipment etc - don't let it bother you.

jadoreyes · 18/12/2025 17:45

It's a lovely homemade cake. Really not keen on the idea that we all have to be professional level bakers or else pay a pro.

RoseyLentil · 18/12/2025 17:45

If I made it a anyone was a whinging twat about it I wouldn’t let them have any 😆

JudgeBread · 18/12/2025 17:45

I'm an amateur and I've made a better looking cake while completely hammered 😁

That said, when it comes to cake I don't think it matters that much unless you're being paid, as long as it tastes good!

BreakfastClubBlues · 18/12/2025 17:46

It just looks like your average home-made cake.

Not 'professional' but still lovely.

TheAutumnCrow · 18/12/2025 17:46

I think it looks really good 👍

Jellycatspyjamas · 18/12/2025 17:46

What was the funny comment? It’s a completely acceptable home made cake, I’d be happy cutting into that.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 18/12/2025 17:47

It looks delicious!

Taweofterror · 18/12/2025 17:47

I think a novice could make that cake, it's just a sponge. Again, that doesn't make it bad.

What is it that was said, perhaps you'd be better off posting about what actually happened?

Teaandscone · 18/12/2025 17:47

Is there any left?
(Passes plate.)

Pancakeflipper · 18/12/2025 17:48

Looks like a homemade cake.

Is that an issue in your circle of family and friends?

PluckyChancer · 18/12/2025 17:48

Yes, it’s clearly a home made cake but still looks lovely.

I’d expect a bought cake made by a professional baker to look absolute perfection in comparison.

I have a couple of friends who make amazing cakes at home for family but they’re still not going to be as good as someone who has spent years training professionally and perfecting their skills. 🤔
