Last night I watched The Two Ronnies Xmas Special from 1982 and Sorry! from 1988.

i literally laughed out loud at some of the sketches in the Two Ronnies -

and Sorry! is an excellent example of my VERY favourite TV genre -

Home Counties set,
middle class,
middle aged,
middle England, ‘
’middle of the road’
sitcoms 🙌

AIBU to want these programmes back on linear BBC1 and ITV?

Miss mountshaft!

the episode where she is Maria 😂😂 in the am dram sound of music

You never saw Miss Mountshaft but you could just imagine her!

Margot playing Maria really was funny!

Agreed. We still laugh about Howard and Hilda and DH and I make sure we don't go out together wearing similar clothes😁

From time to time, adult DD and I accidentally go out wearing the same colour clothes (we don't live together) and I always refer to us being 'Howard and Hilda'.

Ok - I didn’t the social class element in Thr Good Life at all !!!!!

j used to think Margo and Jerry were middle class and Tom and Barbara were working/lower class and that was the essence of the humour! Until my Dad politely informed me that no, both couples were middle class …

Yes all middle class

NooNakedJacuzziness · 17/12/2025 21:17

shall we imagine what she would look like???

i envisioned her as plump, short, glasses, brown curly hair, comfy shoes

I’m also going to change my user name to miss mountshaft!

Tom and Barbara had paid off their mortgage which is why they could manage when he gave up his job to become self sufficient.

Ah thank you ! I was so young at the time I missed this or didn’t understand the significance

I don’t know if I would have understood either - I would have known M and J as posh and then yes would probably have thought the goods were working class as they were digging 😂😂😂

you are not alone

bluewhitebluewhite · 17/12/2025 21:25

Sorry! Is profoundly depressing. I absolutely hated it as a child and have zero desire to go back to that. And Ever Decreasing Circles. Just no. Fond memories of The Good Life though. I’m 60.

I could see why you would as their house and the way they dressed etc were so different from how Margo and Jerry lived!

Definitely not the only one - I don’t think I even knew about social class at all

I didn’t know it was cereal packet toys!

I think I’m gonna have to binge watch whole lot over Xmas

FalseSpring · 17/12/2025 21:28

I'm also Two Ronnies over Morecambe and Wise.

Loved Butterflies and anything Wendy Craig did before that. The Good Life and To the Manor Born were both brilliant.

I have enjoyed rewatching As time goes by, the Derry Girls and the IT Crowd. I agree that Blackbooks was promising, but runs out of steam. I found Yes Minister a bit tedious the second time around.

Has anyone mentioned One Foot in the Grave? I thought that was excellent.

More up to date, I really liked The Detectorists - more like the old sitcoms than other recent stuff.

More and more I find myself watching American series and enjoying the humour but most of these are also now getting quite old.

I met a border terrier called rigsby - great name

Gosh I can’t remember specific scenes on RD like this so much - rigsby being jealous about the acting partner?

no one has mentioned fawlty Towers!! I know all the words here - fave is kipper and the corpse
