Last night I watched The Two Ronnies Xmas Special from 1982 and Sorry! from 1988.

i literally laughed out loud at some of the sketches in the Two Ronnies -

and Sorry! is an excellent example of my VERY favourite TV genre -

Home Counties set,
middle class,
middle aged,
middle England, ‘
’middle of the road’
sitcoms 🙌

AIBU to want these programmes back on linear BBC1 and ITV?

That’s funny! 🤣

I thunk people couldn’t see him as anything else but Frank Spencer. Public opinion when it was announced he was playing The Phantom of the Opera was quite negative.

Yes I hounded my mum as I couldn’t understand it! But I was prob very small

Hello Dolly! was before Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, so I wonder why Gene Kelly thought he was an idiotic! He must’ve done something during the audition!

everdine · 19/12/2025 21:06

Meant to say idiot!

Ever Decreasing Circles is my very favourite sitcom; I have the complete box-set. Just loved Peter Egan....

It was wonderful! I always felt sorry for Martin as Paul was so popular and likeable! I could relate to Martin more.

The houses never seemed to be locked. It was Surbiton in the 1970s!

I adored The Good Life and still have the whole lot on DVD. But, as a Northern girl, I always thought Surbiton was a made-up place name. It sounded too much like suburbia.

Then in the early 1980s I was going for a job interview down in Hampshire. I got a train (from Waterloo I think) and one of the places it stopped at was Surbiton. I was so astonished and delighted to discover it was a real place that I laughed out loud. Must have seemed like the weirdo on the train!

Just Good Friends has a great flugelhorn solo on the theme tune (sung by Paul Nicholas)

Oohh are you a brass bander @Presto95 ?

It was actually filmed in Northwood!

I play 3rd cornet in my local brass band. I took it up about 5 years ago. You should learn @Presto95 it’s great fun. If you’re anywhere near Devon next summer we are taking part in an event called Bandemonium.

I play the trombone in a concert band (not a brass band) in my town in Cheshire. But, funnily enough, we are going on tour to Devon next summer. Nothing to do with your event though I am pretty sure. We are going to be based in Torquay and playing three bandstands somewhere round there.

When is Bandemonium?

Last weekend of July @5foot5 leading nicely into Wessex Band summer school.

Im always impressed with trombone players, how on earth do you pitch with no valves?

Ah that is just before we get there. We are down there the weekend of 21st to 23rd August.

How do we pitch? You just sort of get used to the position you need and micro-adjust as necessary. Similar to a violin in a way. But with more spit!

Good luck with your event.

A friend of mine has a son who is a very talented trombonist and I have accompanied him on many occasions!
And I love that Shostakovich Prelude theme to ever Decreasing Circles and have played it (for the main reason that it was the theme tune!).

I always wondered why she was called Karen too! It jarred every time they said it.

Apparently the kids chose their own chatacter names.

I always thought that this was Richard Briers best role, far better than The Good Life.

I liked him in both roles. Richard Briers had said his favourite TV role was playing Martin Bryce!

Has anyone contracted Jerry's political chicken pox to avoid Christmas this year?

I'm fortunate that I have, "I'm working on Christmas Day!" but if you need an alternative excuse, political chicken pox might be one to consider!

(As you can probably tell, I'm working up to The Good Life Christmas episode)

TheeNotoriousPIG · 22/12/2025 17:22

Yes, when Christmas had to be cancelled, so she had to ring around all of their friends to inform them that Jerry had gone down with chicken pox! Jerry found that he quite liked having a quiet Christmas political chicken pox.
