Last night I watched The Two Ronnies Xmas Special from 1982 and Sorry! from 1988.

i literally laughed out loud at some of the sketches in the Two Ronnies -

and Sorry! is an excellent example of my VERY favourite TV genre -

Home Counties set,
middle class,
middle aged,
middle England, ‘
’middle of the road’
sitcoms 🙌

AIBU to want these programmes back on linear BBC1 and ITV?

Leonard was pretty creepy. Stalking her. His wasn't physically attractive at all. Shudder!

Dollymylove · 17/12/2025 19:04

I was desperate for her to get it on with Leonard 😅

I think it worked better because they didn’t. It was “an affair of the heart!”

TheeNotoriousPIG · 17/12/2025 19:44

I've probably seen all of Porridge, Open All Hours, Some Mothers Do 'Av Em, and Last of the Summer Wine (courtesy of my older sibling who liked the "old" programmes).

I was always more into The Good Life, and have been re-watching Series 1 recently. I also liked To the Manor Born and Keeping Up Appearances, but at the moment, I'm watching some of the very early episodes of Call the Midwife.

Though brilliant in their day, I think if the Two Ronnies were writing/performing today, the shows would look different. All entertainment is of its era, and reflects the societal norms of those eras, if slightly romanticised and sugar-coated. For instance, in "Rising Damp" and "The Liver Birds" none of the characters actually ever had sex, though they constantly discussed it, whereas IRL, with the advent of the pill, everyone I knew at that time was indiscriminately shagging like a rabbit!!!

Mary Whitehouse …no way shagging was going to be on screen…even talking about it got her on a rant 🤣

Dollymylove · 17/12/2025 19:47

Porridge was brilliant. Great cast and of course the fantastic and hugely missed Richard Beckinsale. I was flabbergasted when I heard news of his sudden death😢

Shudder

Why? They were brilliantly funny!!!

Aw come on what’s wrong with you? 🤣😭

1979 - 1986 is the BEST era of TV hands down !!!!!!!

100% agree, I’m 66 and we definitely had the best TV before everything became woke and spoiled 😢.

PistachioTiramisu · 17/12/2025 08:36

I agree OP - it was literally laugh out loud television! I hate the so called comedy these days - it isn't in the slightest bit funny and seems to rely on swearing, sex and discussion of bodily functions. Puts me right off.

What in God's name are you watching? There's far too much nostalgia about today. You can find most comedy shows of the last 50 years on various channels these days (& on radio BBC Radio 4 extra). You can pretend it's 1973 all over again! Or, radio wise, 1954!

Margo was a brilliant character! She was such a snob and would admit it, but when it really counted (like helping gather the harvest) she was a good friend!

Yes! It was a lovely dynamic

and her and Jerry (just heard Margo calling him in my head) bought a cow for them for Xmas!!! 🐮

Piglet89 · 17/12/2025 18:07

”I am not a citizen: I am a resident”.

PK had some absolutely outstanding lines in that superb script, which she delivered in that flawless RP with perfect timing. Margo’s an icon.

She’d have really struggled in the post 2000 era when the internet took over and one couldn’t speak to a real human for customer service!

😂😂. She would!

she was only supposed to be like a very small side character occasionally seen

but wow didn’t she own in..I love her lines

and her marigolds and pinys 🥰

Maddyisqueen · 17/12/2025 20:05

everdine · 17/12/2025 18:13

She truly is an icon!

“Don’t bleed in the sink, I’ve just cleaned it!”

That made me lol

Jerry and the curry smell wafting!! 😂

YouBelongHere · 17/12/2025 20:41

1980's is ahead of my time but I used to work somewhere where the 'Fork Handles/Four Candles' joke was told to me all the time by customers. It went over my head so eventually I watched the sketch and didn't find it all that funny tbh 😂

It's funny 'cos I watched Outnumbered for the first time this year and loved it, was in the mood to get into a new British sitcom so put Gavin & Stacy on, that really wasn't my vibe!

I love Derry Girls, thought that was hilarious. I also love The Goes Wrong Show but I love Mischief so I love pretty much anything they do. I also rewatched all of The IT Crowd and Black Books, watched them as a teenager - Black Books was a good rewatch, the last season was pretty crap though.

MMUmum · 17/12/2025 20:58

Are you being served still makes me laugh out loud, simple humour at it's best

The drivel that masquerades as "comedy" these days is about as funny as a dose of the clap 🤣🤣

The way Margot use to call Jerry’s name! Penelope Keith was wonderful!

Classic Margot, buying them a cow for Christmas!!! 🤣. Didn’t it have a ribbon around its neck!

By today’s standards yes, but I never thought it was when I watched it. Ria never minded!

It had a ribbon and a big cow bell..I think

they knitted them the green jumpers

I tried to type out the sound of her calling Jerry - Je ray! But I can’t - you know what I mean

Ok - I didn’t the social class element in Thr Good Life at all !!!!!

j used to think Margo and Jerry were middle class and Tom and Barbara were working/lower class and that was the essence of the humour! Until my Dad politely informed me that no, both couples were middle class …
