Last night I watched The Two Ronnies Xmas Special from 1982 and Sorry! from 1988.

i literally laughed out loud at some of the sketches in the Two Ronnies -

and Sorry! is an excellent example of my VERY favourite TV genre -

Home Counties set,
middle class,
middle aged,
middle England, ‘
’middle of the road’
sitcoms 🙌

AIBU to want these programmes back on linear BBC1 and ITV?

I was born in the mid-sixties so remember many of these comedy shows really well. I think the seventies to nineties really were a golden era for comedy but, naturally, some shows have aged better than others. One of my favourites still is Ever Decreasing Circles. It is a lovely, subtle comedy of manners, gentle and grown up in the true sense of the word. Richard Briars' sensitive portrayal of a man on the autistic spectrum (at a time when we all knew people who were slightly odd but didn't know why) is very well done and the supporting cast are all superb. The problem with many later comedy shows is that they have become increasingly obvious and crude, relying on bad language for a laugh. The best older shows are much more nuanced.

Wonderful piano theme tune to Ever Decreasing Circles

The Good Life all the way for me. Haven’t watched the Christmas special yet this year, but I know I will.

Same. I adore The Good Life.

I forgot Dads Army - I used to sing “who do you think you’re kidding Mr Kipper” until my friend told me it was Mr Hitler about 20 years later

brilliant comic timing and talent

Yes it is. It is the prelude op. 34 no. 15 by the Russian composer Dmitry Shostakovich.

I’ve never seen it.

i meant to ask you, did you ever watch Ever Decreasing Circles?

SerendipityJane · 19/12/2025 15:01

Since "The Good Life" is getting so much love, who remembers Vyvians rant in "The Young Ones"

No! No! NO! I'm not watching the bloody Good Life! Bloody bloody bloody! I hate it! It's so bloody nice! Felicity "Treacle" Kendall and Richard "Sugar-Flavored-Snot" Briars! What do they do now? Chocolate bloody Button ads, that's what! They're just a couple of reactionary stereotypes, confirming the myth that everyone in Britain is a lovable, middle-class eccentric - and I - HATE - THEM!

Of course the humour gets funnier when you remember that Tom and Barbara were very much the BBC version of counter culture in the 70s, much as "alternative comedy" was in the 80s.

Speaking of which, who remembers "Who Dares Wins" ? Or "OTT (Over The Top) the "adult" TISWAS.

The best line is still

“don’t swear Jerry, and don’t bleed in the sink, I’ve just cleaned it” 😂

I find too much racism and sexism in old comedy. It's very sad to see how acceptable it was.
