Liverpool attacker sentenced

Paul Doyle, the Liverpool parade attacker, has been sentenced to twenty one years and six months in prison for his attack that injured 134 people.

That’s 258 months, or less than two months per person injured. He’ll be out in half, so 129 months served. Less than one month per person. Reading the victim impact statements was awful. One from a little boy, who is completely traumatised, stuck with me.

AIBU to think this is a farce?!

Sentence is much more appropriate than I thought it would be, given eg what short sentences drunk drivers who kill get. Though he should be banned from driving for life.

Yes there was a shocking case where a drunk driver killed two teenagers on a pedestrian crossing (they had a green man) and he only got 6 years!

HonoriaBulstrode · 16/12/2025 20:30

The BBC are pushing that he’s the “nice neighbour” and he had “two sides”

The BBC aren't 'pushing' anything. They are reporting on the story. His previous history, good and bad, is relevant in trying to understand what happened.

The BBC reported all the victim impact statements.

do we know how he ended up in the parade of an opposing team ?

He was going to pick up some friends who had been attending the parade, having dropped them there earlier. This was all in the BBC's live reporting over the last two days.

And in what, thirty years, she never thought to speak out?

You're really trying to put blame on his wife here??

Mrsblobby88 · 16/12/2025 20:34

Calm down OP. You have asked if you are being unreasonable and are then going bananas when posters are telling you that you are! You are by the way. Child sex offenders get less time than that!

Pedallleur · 16/12/2025 20:34

mumofoneAloneandwell · 16/12/2025 20:03

Do we think his sentence will be reduced on appeal?

No. Why should it? He didn't get lost and stop, he drove deeper into the crowd raging at them. Had he driven over people he wouldn't have known or seemingly cared.

NormasArse · 16/12/2025 20:35

ireallycantbelievethis · 16/12/2025 19:13

So his mates (probably also violent too) defended him.

I wonder if the response would be this way if he had attacked an affluent area of London, as opposed to Liverpool.

Now you’re reacting with rage.

These people weren’t ‘mates’, and you’re accusing them of lying.

I dont think it should be, dont get me wrong

Why did he do it? I still don’t understand!

Another angry man who can't control his temper

Horrific.

sittingonabeach · 16/12/2025 20:39

Papers have to be careful what they report before the outcome of a trial, so previous convictions won’t normally be mentioned until after the trial

Disturbia81 · 16/12/2025 20:40

I am all for harsh sentences and think all murderers should serve life etc, but in this case I think it’s a good one. I was worried he’d get a lot less

SwedishEdith · 16/12/2025 20:40

I thought it was a heavy sentence. Ironic that it was a crime committed through pure rage and the OP is frothing about the sentence.

This about his Twitter account shows something predictable as well.

In that had he attacked an affluent area of London I doubt the news would be running stories about him being the “nice neighbour” and a man with “two sides”

That's very naive. There's a reason that "Nice bloke. Quiet. Kept himself to himself" is a trope.

LimpysGotCancer · 16/12/2025 20:41

He’ll be 68 by the time he gets out. Just young enough to enjoy a nice long retirement. It’s disgusting.

I think lots of people have absolutely no idea what it's like to be in prison, particularly for a long stretch.

15-20 years. Imagine that - I mean properly try to imagine it. Locked up, no liberty, the sheer endless boredom with no end in sight, away from family and friends, constantly on edge, fear of violence, the noise, never any peace. It is a very harsh punishment. As he deserves.

I'd love to see the some of the "holiday camp" brigade serve a few months and see what it's like. They get TV and PlayStations so it would be easy, right?

Sesma · 16/12/2025 20:41

It seemed appropriate for the crime

Dawnb19 · 16/12/2025 20:41

I hope he serves the full 21 years but I doubt it. We're too soft. I was actually expecting him to get off if I'm honest but I think he's lawyers will appeal it in a few years and he'll get it reduced. I hope not though but they will.

According to some newspaper articles he has PTSD and was discharged from the royal marines due to it. With all the people kicking and hitting the car beforehand he just put he's foot down. Again I hope they don't appeal but I can't see him doing the full 21 years.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 16/12/2025 20:42

ireallycantbelievethis · 16/12/2025 19:18

So many people on here saying it’s a harsh sentence.

“He’s ruined his life”

Look at bbc. Painting him as the nice neighbour, a man with two sides.

Rubbish. Calm down and stop van banging. You're as angry and reactionary as the defendant.

CheesecakeOnTheLanai · 16/12/2025 20:42

Flowerslamp · 16/12/2025 19:07

He had multiple character references from many parts of his life to say that wasn't the case at all. Don't be blaming his wife fgs!

Obviously on this day day his temper was a big problem, but there's absolutely nothing to suggest it had been for the previous 30 years.

I'm afraid you haven't looked at the full details of this case. It emerged in court that he has a long history of violence as a young man, including biting the ear off a sailor in a drunken brawl and punching another man in the face in an unrelated incident. This was no one off incident, this was an example of male rage and violence and yet again innocent people have paid the price.

Lalgarh · 16/12/2025 20:43

mumofoneAloneandwell · 16/12/2025 20:03

Do we think his sentence will be reduced on appeal?

Honestly I hope it's increased. He's proved he's not safe in the outside world

NavigatingMyLife · 16/12/2025 20:47

Judges have to follow the sentencing guidelines for the conviction. They can’t make their own rules up.

CombatBarbie · 16/12/2025 20:49

ireallycantbelievethis · 16/12/2025 19:07

Did he manage to get his life on track? Or did he just become better at hiding his evil and rage?

You cannot rehabilitate someone like this.

We can't rehabilitate pedophiles or rapists but we always give them the minimum sentence.....let them out and they reoffend.

Gbh with intent can carry life sentence, so can murder but rarely do they get max sentencing either.

Do you want the death penalty brought back in?

MasterBeth · 16/12/2025 20:52

ireallycantbelievethis · 16/12/2025 19:17

I’ve read enough to know this vile, evil man attacked one of the largest cities in the UK and a lot of people seem to think it was perfectly okay

No-one thinks it was perfectly OK.

Who thinks it was perfectly OK?

Sesma · 16/12/2025 20:54

What difference does it make that it's a large city.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 16/12/2025 20:55

ireallycantbelievethis · 16/12/2025 19:18

“He just wanted to drive down the road”

Bollocks. Utter bollocks. Anyone with half a brain cell knew what was happening that day. Even more so in the city of Liverpool. It was covered on the main news!

He was going to pick friends up from watching the parade. There's no way in hell he could be unaware it was happening.

Falling asleep at the wheel isn’t an intentional act.

Daryl Anderson was drunk, driving at 140mph and taking photos when he crashed and killed a baby and his aunt. He got 17 years.
