To be concerned about a war?

Woke up this morning opened my SM and first posts I see are about a basically inevitably pending war with Russia. It’s the first I’ve heard of it. Sir Richard Knighton said the threat needs to be taken seriously and “called for greater honesty with uk families about what it means to prepare for the very real threat to national security”. He also said security situation is more dangerous than it has been at any point in his career and the UK can no longer rely on military forces alone to keep security safe. Finally the comment of “sons and daughters must be prepared to fight” it would take a “whole nation effort” and “families would have to face real sacrifice”

i mean wtaf? I certainly won’t be rushing to the frontline that’s for sure. What’s going on? Very concerned

if it’s going to happen I’ll be considering moving abroad

Most people don't have that possibility.

Idiots, Trump, Putin and Kim, hopefully old and decrepid and will drop down dead soon.....

AOC for President!

I've looked into this. If staying in the UK, Skegness is considered the least likely to be hit by a nuclear bomb, or the resulting fallout. Australia is considered the safest country, owing to it being geographically furthest away from conflict, self sustainable in terms of resources, and less likely to enter conflict due to political neutrality.

I say this all with tongue in cheek of course.

Warfare is far more likely to be waged by unconventional means. In fact, it already is.

Skegness isn’t far from RAF Coningsby and Lincolnshire is full of military assets that would be targeted so you’re going to be enjoying plenty of fallout there. Honestly the best place to be in a hot bucket war is in the middle of it so you don’t have to experience the end of civilisation in slow motion.

I did say it was tongue in cheek. I'd have no intention of surviving a nuclear war, even if it was possible.

I wouldn't fight for this government, absolutely no chance!! They don't give a crap about us

All this ‘I/my son/my dog wouldn’t be fighting, over my dead body’ is irrelevant as you’d been forced to by law, with the punishments for non compliance being worse than actually doing it. The whole point is that it’s mandatory.

You can't force people, though. Remember the conscious objectors in WW1?

Not witty just an observation.

The left have suddenly hopped into bed with Russia for no other reason than they’re being instructed to by their West-hating overlords, like Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn.

They will do anything at this point to bring about the dismantling and destruction of their own home and their children’s lives.

They’re insane.

I think you’ll find that it’s that Nigel Farage chap and his merry band of racists and grifters who are into Russian money going all the way back to UKIP and Brexit

There were so a few of them and there were so few other people in jail at that particular time that they could be tolerated and just ridiculed
We wouldn’t have the capacity for that this time around so they just have to be shot

Just shoot 'em, eh? Whatever happened to 'my body, my choice'. You seem to think that the warmongers 'own' us and can send our offspring off to be killed and maimed, but you might find that there is a fair bit of resistance to that notion. Did you also believe the lies and propaganda about Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction?

StruggleFlourish · 17/12/2025 15:07

You should ALWAYS be concerned about war. Peace is a privilege.

Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with you or me or anyone here.
Ultimately it comes down to world leaders and their whims.
Oh sure, you could argue that the people are the ones who voted these particular leaders into power and they typically don't act against the desires of their citizens but we all know that's not actually true.
Not in some countries, the ones that are most warlike.

Yeah. You should be concerned.

Periperi2025 · 17/12/2025 15:13

There have been wars throughout human history so it's not unreasonable to think there will be another one...
But sir Richard knightons entire adult life, career and identity is military (war...for want of a better word), his perspective of things is going to be massively biased based on this.

I honestly can't see anyone agreeing to fight the Russians, apart from perhaps some bloodthirsty meatheads who'd never normally get the chance to kill someone.

The government will have to come up with an alternative narrative to wind us all up.

FWIW Sir Richard Knighton has come in for some criticism from some quarters because he's a very atypical Chief of the Defence Staff..

Sure he's a lifelong career officer but his background is engineering, not in one of the roles with teeth.

That said once people rise to that level they have become very politically astute, and he won't have gone off piste, his comments will have been in line with the thinking in Downing Street.

I dated an officer who was an engineer who'd been to military six form, engineering degree sponsored by the army, so similar to Sir Richard who was military cadets at uni then straight into his military career.

The guy i was with was only late 20s and was military through and through, even at that age. Sir Richard had another 3 decades military exposure than that.

He's military, which is why he has the job he has, and is why i shall remain sceptical.

That's all well and good, but all I can offer as someone who also served as an officer for a while but never got even close to 1 star is that IMHO it would still be completely wrong to characterise Sir Richard's comments as being a case of a very senior miltary officer going off on one....

Senior Officers don't get to 4 or 5 star level without being very aware of what's on message and what they are required say, and most especially for the CDS they are very much required be on the same page as number 10...

It’s the same in American forces. General officers are very attuned to the political climate and very rarely speak publicly about matters of public concern unless they have been asked to do so.

Hi and yep, agreed.

Also maybe worth bearing in mind CDS has only been in post maybe 3 months, so is very much a Keir Starmer approved appointee.

Are you actually a Mother?

smallglassbottle · 17/12/2025 17:57

The scaremongering is punishment for the migrant protests and digital id protests. It's so nice of them to do it the week before Christmas as well 😂 they can't fucking leave us be whilst we struggle to afford food, central heating, gifts, all whilst fighting the flu.

Bunch of bastards. I hope they all choke on their turkey 😂

Sparron · 17/12/2025 18:52

For everyone who thinks nothing of throwing their lives away, here is a handy link where you can sign up to fight in Ukraine.

Perhaps Starmer and Macron can volunteer first?

Sign up to fight in Ukraine

BreakingBroken · 17/12/2025 21:55

@Sparron would you not protect your home/yourself and your children if drones attacked you?

Goldenbear · 17/12/2025 17:25

Are you actually a Mother?

What a ridiculous statement
Precisely, because I’m a mother, I’m prepared to stand up for the safety of all children.
My kids are nearly adults which probably puts three of them at least in the category of being raped as is the preferred weapon of invading armies is usually so would their brother stand up and fight for them? Yes he bloody well would and I expect your boys to too. Especially the ones that are out painting roundabouts and complaining about foreigners or here’s their chance to show us

BreakingBroken · 17/12/2025 21:55

@Sparron would you not protect your home/yourself and your children if drones attacked you?

There's a bigger chance of me seeing pigs fly outside of my window than Russian attack drones. Currently; the enemies I'm more worried about aren't the Russians but the ones who occupy the Palace of Westminster.

smallglassbottle · 18/12/2025 00:25

Perhaps the government will stage something to kick it all off 🤔 😉
