Butternut squash soup for dinner

AIBU or is butternut squash soup on its own not enough for dinner?

No it's not.

likeafishneedsabike · 15/12/2025 10:17

The only soups I consider to be full meals are the ones with rice or pasta in them. So I’d still be hungry after a bowl of soup and would need a sandwich to go with it!

Greggsit · 15/12/2025 10:17

No. Soup is not a dinner. It may be acceptable as a lunch, but not as the main meal of the day.

Jellycatspyjamas · 15/12/2025 10:19

It depends what else I’ve eaten during the day. If I had a big lunch then soup would be fine, if not I’d add a toasted sandwich or some fruit and yoghurt for dessert. It also depends on how thick the soup is, I make a lentil soup you could stand on, that would be enough for dinner with some crusty bread, a thin soup not so much.

MojoMoon · 15/12/2025 10:19

Depends what else you ate that day?

If you have a roast or fish and chips for lunch, that is prob 1200 calories so a soup (200 calories or so) for dinner would a sensible choice although if you had bread and butter with it, you'd be doubling that figure.

TittyGajillions · 15/12/2025 10:19

So no bread? No that's not enough. Cue the teeny tinies to tell you it's plenty!

dottiedodah · 15/12/2025 10:19

I had vegetable soup at the Cathedral cafe .Very nice but need plenty of crusty bread! that was lunch not dinner .

HoppityBun · 15/12/2025 10:20

Not unless you put something like butter beans or cannellini beans in it together with other vegetables and serve it with bread. No.

Lmnop22 · 15/12/2025 10:21

I often have soup for dinner but, admittedly, only after having eaten a big or late lunch

YourWinter · 15/12/2025 10:22

Depends what was eaten for lunch. I’m happy with soup plus cheese on toast, or good bread and butter.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 15/12/2025 10:22

Butternut squash soup plus bread would be fine for dinner.

TimSamandLulu · 15/12/2025 10:23

I do soup for dinner quite regularly but always with at least two of: loads of bread, toasties alongside, a substantial pudding like apple crumble and custard.

TheKeatingFive · 15/12/2025 10:23

It depends on what else you're eating that day, but soup with bread and cheese (for example) doesn't sound totally outrageous

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/12/2025 10:23

Not in this house.
But in winter I do make main-meal soups, very thick, NOT blended, with lots of vegetables chopped small, and one or more of red lentils/pearl barley/orzo pasta.

And often grated cheese on top, with bread on the side.

Personally, a bowl of butternut squash soup feeds me for several days. 😂

Soup with a cheese toastie is food from the Gods. So comforting at this time of year. My family have been having this a lot for lunches on Saturdays recently. I can’t get enough.

pizzaHeart · 15/12/2025 10:29

With lots of bread and cheese - yes.
just a bowl of soup - only yes, if you are on strict calorie counting diet, otherwise - no.

SarahAndQuack · 15/12/2025 10:30

Maybe if you do it with loads of crispy fried bacon bits over the top (which, btw, is amazing anyway) and plenty of bread and butter. Also to me depends how thick you make it - if it's a lovely rich one with a bit of spice and some butter beans whizzed up in there, it'll have some body and people will be less likely to feel hungry.

Suitbox · 15/12/2025 10:33

It needs bread and some protein. I'd have it for dinner with some yogurt and nuts or seeds on top, but I don't really do "main meal". I eat 3 roughly equivalent meals, with all the food groups. I wouldn't consider veg soup alone a good lunch either.

Catza · 15/12/2025 10:34

Depends on how hungry you are, doesn't it?

Nannyfannybanny · 15/12/2025 10:34

This is Mumsnet, where folk have at least 3 course meals a day! I'm not putting what I eat. I make a lot of homemade soup, batch and frozen. I love soup in the winter, but the idea of butter on the bread,is revolting. Don't people break little bits off and dip in the soup..

Friendlyfart · 15/12/2025 10:46

Depends if of you’ve had a main meal for lunch, I may have soup for dinner if I’ve had a bigger lunch. Bread with it? Cheese?

Ygfrhj · 15/12/2025 10:48

Yes with a dollop of yoghurt and some seeds or crispy bacon on top, plus bread.

DelurkingAJ · 15/12/2025 10:48

After a full Sunday roast we’d usually have bread and cheese type dinner so yes, soup would be fine. For a main meal, no thank you!

CautiousLurker2 · 15/12/2025 11:00

Only if accompanied by lots of crusty bread and butter.
