AIBU or is butternut squash soup on its own not enough for dinner?

Why does bread have to be crusty?

I often have soup, toast and fruit for dinner - not soup on its own usually.

Because homemade soup and crusty bread is one of life’s pleasures. Miles away from a tin of Heinz and a slice of warburtons best.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 15/12/2025 11:41

If you are in bed recovering from an illness, then yes, probably. Most people would need bread and cheese and some kind of desert alongside it. And I would probably only serve this, if it wasn’t the main meal that day. Or at least that the other meal was equally substantial.

Sorry what? A bowl of soup and some bread is hardly over eating.

No I meant the posters saying soup isn’t a meal unless accompanied by bread, cheese and pudding

A bowl of soup and slice of crusty bread is a meal.

vanillalattes · 15/12/2025 11:45

It would be absolutely fine for me as long as it came with some bread and butter. I often have soup for dinner at this time of year.

Depending on the consistency of the soup it’s a small meal, I’m having exactly this for lunch and will be looking for something more substantial for my evening meal.

Oh well. I find a tin of Heinz and a slice of Warburtons quite adequate now and again. I do make my own soup but not all the time and if you live on your own crusty bread doesn't keep all that well either.

ColdSpringHarbor · 15/12/2025 12:08

Surely it depends how much soup you have and how much toast/bread/crackers you have with it?

I think it's weird how many people talk about the lack of protein. How could it possibly matter if you have one meal without much protein in it? It's one meal. Have an extra egg tomorrow. You could always add cheese or seeds or have a handful of nuts afterwards if you were hungry.

Rewis · 15/12/2025 12:09

I do belive soup can be dinner, but not just butternut squash soup. Some croutons and cottage cheese and bacon crumble on top and a nice sourdough on he side, i would then consider it dinner.

I like having party soups like beef soup etc. For dinner. Creamy salmon soup is my fave.

Thanks this is helpful. Assuming this is your main meal of the day - where you’ve had yogurt / nuts / fruit for breakfast, a lunch of sandwich or smaller portion of leftovers from the night before not exceeding 4-500 cals, and snacks of 1-200 cals max. You’re also someone who does at least 10000 steps a day, runs twice a week and weight trains 3 times a week. For context.

Thats not a meal thats basically warm flavoured water. It's also not a balance meal i.e. not enough fat or protein.

feathermucker · 15/12/2025 12:19

With a cheese toastie maybe?

No, definitely not enough for me in that context. I’d want more protein and more vegetables across the day. If leftover lunch was something like chilli or lasagne it would be ok but yoghurt, a sandwich and some soup isn’t enough for me. I’m sure in mumsnet land it would feed a family of 4 for a week but in the real world.

I don’t really get your point, if you need more food just eat more food, if soup is enough then it’s fine.

It sounds like someone with disordered eating, particularly with the weight training mentioned. There’s not enough protein or carbohydrates, it’s not balanced. Even if it’s part of a planned calorie-restricted diet that meal is only one food group (vegetables).

That sounds like someone with an eating disorder.

No, any plain vegetable soup on its own is not a main meal. Unless you've just had all your wisdom teeth out.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 15/12/2025 13:01

We often have homemade soup for dinner, with bread and cheese, and it's plenty. We're vegetarians and are both a healthy weight.

seaelephant · 15/12/2025 13:16

with bread and butter, absolutely it is

pollydollydoo · 15/12/2025 13:19

I love soup and often have soup and bread for dinner. A bowl of Heinz tomato soup and a couple of slices of buttered white hovis is a top tier winter dinner for me. That said, I do also have a smaller appetite than most and have never been one for big meals. Whenever I used to read about those ‘soup and a sandwich’ combos, I used to wonder how people could manage to eat both in one sitting, but having read through this thread I realise I must be the odd one!

Winterwonderwhy · 15/12/2025 13:20

Greggsit · 15/12/2025 10:17

No. Soup is not a dinner. It may be acceptable as a lunch, but not as the main meal of the day.

Same. It’s also a light lunch type food.

ThatCleverCoralCrow · 15/12/2025 13:21

I think it's good if you got some nice crusty bread to go with it!

Definitely not enough if you were sedentary, way too little if you are active. If it was bulked out with a lot of bread then fine but not on it's own. Whoever is eating this is wasting their time weight training on a diet like that.

blobby10 · 15/12/2025 13:26

Depends on what's with it and in it and, of course, how big the bowl it. If you're having a 2 pint portion then yes. If not then probably need a sandwich of some sort.

RuthW · 15/12/2025 13:26

That’s a lunch

The question then is not whether butternut squash soup is enough of a meal but that there isn't probably enough calories in a day overall. For example, I will frequently eat a tin of tomato soup as my evening meal but I have heafty breakfast and lunch plus various snacks. So 120cal soup as my last evening meal is plenty and I prefer to have a bigger lunch so that I have enough energy for my evening crossfit workout.
