AIBU or is butternut squash soup on its own not enough for dinner?

I'm British (Lancastrian) and most of my family prefer dry bread or dry toast with soup, not buttered.

Let me just sharpen my pitchfork…

Let me just sharpen my pitchfork…

(I just need to wipe the dry ‘mustard’ off of it)

Hankunamatata · 15/12/2025 18:10

Id want some nice seeded crusty bread with it (and butter)

HoorayHettie · 15/12/2025 18:13

I love a warm, buttered cheese scone with butternut squash soup . . .

Cakeandcardio · 15/12/2025 19:15

Served with bread and butter it would be fine

firstofallimadelight · 15/12/2025 19:21

We have soup for dinner with either chunky veg/lentils or pasta in. Or if it’s a smooth soup we have a bread roll or croutons

FlappingMadly · 15/12/2025 19:21

I add lots red lentils, v small cubes of carrot, kale and white beans. Sprinkle seeds on and a squeeze of lemon. Serve with cheese on toast with Worcester sauce. That's a meal.

I just had tomato soup with avocado on toast on the side 👌

I wish I liked avocado. I even chucked some Henderson's relish on the cheese on toast 😋

TowerRavenSeven · 15/12/2025 20:46

It’s great with cheese ravioli in it and lots of them. On its own? Not a meal.

5128gap · 15/12/2025 20:47

I'd love that for dinner with whole grain bread. I'd want som protein as well though, so would probably sprinkle with chopped nuts.

Wiaa · 15/12/2025 20:52

We had spicy butternut squash and lentil soup ( blended) for our main meal yesterday with a whole tiger loaf ( me dh and 2dc) it was very filling although we did have mince pie and custard too

Bowies · 15/12/2025 21:11

Not if you’ve eaten lightly throughout the day, per your update.

7catsisnotenough · 15/12/2025 21:27

Aha! Finally the competitive eating vegetarian version of the infamous Mumsnet chicken 🤣A bowl of hearty soup feeds my family of 12 for over a week 😉🤣

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/12/2025 21:30

It needs a substantial side dish too: toasted cheese sandwiches, sausage rolls, falafel or mini meatballs

Laura95167 · 15/12/2025 22:40

Needs a scone or grilled cheese sarnie for dipping

AIBU or is butternut squash soup on its own not enough for dinner?

depends on how skinny you are

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 16/12/2025 01:10

Maybe with some nice filling bread rolls.

Sounds delish.

QuirkyMoose · 16/12/2025 01:57

Butternut squash soup is fine as part of dinner. If you pair it with a hearty bread, and perhaps a salad, I would say that could be a dinner. But just soup on its own? No. Most people wouldn't agree with that. Now, if you have almost no appetite, or if you had a really big or heavy lunch, okay. You can call it dinner. But most people would expect more.

Jk987 · 16/12/2025 02:44

It’s delicious and filling so yes with bread dipped in.

anon4net · 16/12/2025 04:17

We have soup for dinner once a week but I add things to it to make it a complete meal.

  • If it's a thinner soup (minestrone etc.) I may serve with grilled cheese
  • A thicker soup like squash or a thick creamy chicken soup, I'd serve with crusty bread
  • If I don't have crusty bread I will put out crackers and cheese.
  • I usually put out a small platter of cut up fruit & veg as well

A great meal that can be very quick and with a few bits & bobs on the side, nice & filling!

bizkittt · 16/12/2025 04:19

No it’s not a proper dinner

Thanks this is helpful. Assuming this is your main meal of the day - where you’ve had yogurt / nuts / fruit for breakfast, a lunch of sandwich or smaller portion of leftovers from the night before not exceeding 4-500 cals, and snacks of 1-200 cals max. You’re also someone who does at least 10000 steps a day, runs twice a week and weight trains 3 times a week. For context.

Tell us who made you butternut squash for dinner and what they said when you said that wasn't enough food then??
Soup by itself isn't enough food for a meal unless it's a hearty soup with added protein. I can make a good soup with around 400 calories per serving that I'd eat for lunch. I wouldn't serve that for dinner though as dinner is the most substantial meal in our house. A bowl of butternut soup would come in lower than that unless it had a lot of added cream and would not be filling enough for a dinner IMO.

WashYourDamnRice · 16/12/2025 04:52

Perfectly fine as long as it's not a single sad bowl of soup.

Soup, homemade bread, and a diabetic coma inducing dessert for afters.

Solentsolo · 16/12/2025 05:14

I am logging food on ‘my fitness pal’ just now not for weight loss reasons but to see if I am getting the right split of nutrients. All these people on here have clearly never worked out their calorie requirements and worked out whether they are meeting them or exceeding before, If they did they’d find a ‘just’ a bowl of soup is plenty. Soup with bread is fine if you’re active. A bowl of soup with a toastie is half your daily calorie requirements in one meal. What about breakfast, lunch and snacks?

CurlewKate · 16/12/2025 05:35

On Mumsnet it’s definitely enough. Probably too much, unless you’re planning not to eat the next day.
