I lived in the USA for 8 yrs and all my neighbours had guns, as a Brit I totally disagreed with this…. However since returning to the UK over the last 10 years, I’ve started to think they have a point. If UK law changes and I can purchase guns to protect myself and my family, I will absolutely do this. I feel I have the right to protect myself as the police are not available.

If the gun laws here were relaxed, there could be another Dunblane. Which is exactly why they were tightened in the first place.

They aren’t tight enough as far as I’m concerned

Thank you that’s helpful, I’ll be voting for Nigel Farage as I suspect a lot of Brit’s will be.

I personally think people who resort to attacking my views with insults about my mental health or being a psycho (probably with an intent to try and shut me up) must have limited intelligence as it is often the ‘bullying and ignorant types’ that do this rather than engaging in a dialogue with different views.

OmNomShiva · 14/12/2025 12:34

This absolute cack about the UK not being “ready”.

We’ve already passed having guns, we are beyond that primitive state and into a safer thereafter. There is no “ready” because we already binned it.

The US meanwhile is not ready to give up firearms, because they’re paranoid victim-mentality racists still living in a primitive feudal existence. When that still very young country grows up a bit, its people might learn that losing thousands of kids a year to guns is an idiotic way to live.

The thing is, OP, I'm genuinely interested in different views where it's clear that someone has something insightful or interesting to say. But from what you've said on this thread, I really don't feel that your views are of sufficient value or interest to warrant my engagement.

I haven't called you a psycho, and I don't necessarily think you're mentally unwell. I just think you appear to lack the critical thinking skills to be able to engage intelligently with the evidence.

How do you feel about the gun crime, mass shootings and particularly school shootings op?

Are they just a necessary evil so you can feel safe?

In what way is recommending you seek support for anxiety insulting your mental health? You are clearly way more anxious about this subject than you need to be, therefore seeking support would be wise.

Nobody should be attacking you for your views or calling you mentally ill. But you haven’t engaged with the many posts on here which have pointed out that allowing mass gun ownership leads to significantly increased gun crime - including school shootings. I do think it is fair of people to question your motives/reasons for posting this in the circumstances and even to question your critical thinking skills given the evidence.

Also, we are not “not ready” for mass gun ownership as you suggest. We have evolved as a society beyond such an outdated notion.

I no longer feel safe in my own home or honectown. Home security is a false illusion it does not protect you. I have no confidence that the police will attend when called, public walk on by if you are getting hassled, violence against women is increasing, youths are almost feral with minimal parental supervision.

So I don’t go out after dark, I’m aware of my surrounding, I certainly would not walk alone on a public footpath at any time of day.

The thing is though, this is clear evidence that you have an anxiety disorder and need mental health help. When kind, rational people point this out you are experiencing that as if it's an attack. Clearly you consider having mental health problems to be something to be ashamed of such that you think people helping you are making derogatory comments. Obviously that's going to be a big barrier to you getting the help you need but none of this is an attack on you.

But you ignored the point. If guns were legalised and available then the people on the street trying to rob you would also have one. So then you’d be right back where you started except with more death. It has been proven everyone having a gun makes everyone less safe.

It’s to be hoped it’d be an even bigger barrier to her ever legally purchasing a gun.

TBF I do like the moral principal of being allowed to arm and carry something to defend yourself. At least in America the bad guys will almost always have a weapon on them. So you're kinda stuffed if someone comes out with a weapon and you're unarmed. Same in the UK. Someone pulls a knife out, you're kinda stuffed unless you're that good at martial arts. I have a friend that's a US Army vet and he proudly told me that in the USA he's always ccw armed and is willing to protect himself and his property. I know Americans who have legally utilised lethal force to neutralise burglars.

Here in the UK we cower in fear and let them steal because "it's just stuff". An American is taught to defend themselves and their property, because it's theirs.

I didn't want to say this. But I had to.

And having done so, you may now withdraw to your cave!

I'm in a city considered rough by MN standards - half the dististcs are in very deprived stats and I don't feel like this.

It's dark at 4pm and it's not light till after 8 this time of year so it's near impossible to never be outside after dark this time of year.

Not walking on a public foothpath by yourself - that's not normal - what the hell do you think would happen and why would everyone being armed make anything better.

Swiftie1878 · 14/12/2025 13:06

UK law won’t change. The population wouldn’t allow it.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/12/2025 13:07

HRTQueen · 14/12/2025 13:11

The US was built on violence

the issue is the US is a violent country and people feel it’s their right to protect themselves and their property/land thankfully we do not have the same mindset here we are also not living in country of such extremes

many countries have high gun ownership that do not have the issues that the US does

it won’t change it’s so ingrained in the culture maybe the country over time will become less violent but it’s a long way from that

You already have the legal right to protect yourself.

Notmyreality · 14/12/2025 13:19

Not the right to bear arms , but we in the UK should have the right to defend ourselves, family and property without fear of repercussion. You break into my house don’t expect to be walking home.

Another2356 · 14/12/2025 11:09

I suggest that those who cannot accept that someone may have a different perspective without personally attacking them are perhaps trying to shut down ‘free speech’. Not one person has attempted to explore why I may have a different view point, you have simply disagreed and then added personal derogatory comments. Again most interesting behaviour by those that disagree with me.

It’s you that’s not engaging with others’ points though!
You say that you don’t feel safe and think we should have the right to be armed. Posters are addressing this and have not only pointed out, but also supplied irrefutable evidence, on how that will make our society LESS safe for EVERYONE.
You haven’t acknowledged any this nor explained why, say, increased numbers of children dying of gunshot wounds or gung ho cops shooting burglars is an acceptable part of your new “safe” regime.
