Right to bear arms

I lived in the USA for 8 yrs and all my neighbours had guns, as a Brit I totally disagreed with this…. However since returning to the UK over the last 10 years, I’ve started to think they have a point. If UK law changes and I can purchase guns to protect myself and my family, I will absolutely do this. I feel I have the right to protect myself as the police are not available.

Thank you that’s helpful, I’ll be voting for Nigel Farage as I suspect a lot of Brit’s will be.

I think if you had led with this, or included it in your OP, this thread would have gone very differently.

You've come with a political agenda.

EatMoreChocolate44 · 14/12/2025 13:32

The biggest cause of death in children/teenagers in America is due to guns. All preventable. Why would anyone want that. You are being very unreasonable.

bridgetreilly · 14/12/2025 13:35
  1. You don’t have the right.
  2. Guns in homes lead to guns being used.
  3. This is how school shootings happen and toddlers accidentally shoot themselves.
  4. Guns don’t protect. If you bring out a gun against an intruder or attacker with a gun, you are more likely to be shot.

Let’s hope it’s not you that get attacked or a member of your family raped. Bet you’ll wish you had a gun for protection then.

I want the right to protect myself and my property using force if required and a right to stand my ground and having and using a gun against a person intending me harm is very reasonable.

BUT THE RAPIST WILL HAVE A GUN TOO

No not a political agenda I’m actually a Tory but I did not realise reform are looking an easing gun control…. That secured my vote.

When was the last time your life was threatened and the police were not available? And where will you keep the (loaded) gun to protect yourself, but not make it available to children, burglars or random people, in your handbag? Also can you shoot a gun without being a danger to all around you?

I agree. I think we as a populace aren't trained or used to guns. The criminals probably would latch on to it first. The average Brit wouldn't know how to use it effectively for self defense.

I'd rather start small with a bit of pepper spray. I think at least for our society, we aren't built at all for guns.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/12/2025 13:53

You already have the right in the UK to use reasonable force ro defend yourself.

A gun probably wouldn't be seen a reasonable in most circumstances as most UK criminals do not have guns.

I expect that will be for the hunting, shooting and fishing brigade not householders or hooligans, we have enough problems with knife crime, without making it easier for anybody who wants one to get a gun.

I suspect it would give you a very false sense of security carrying a loaded gun, would you have time to get it out if you were attacked? Would the attacker take it off you and use it against you? How likely would you be to have an accident with it or a child to get hold of it if you are carrying it all the time?

You have the right to defend yourself with reasonable force in UK.

Having burglars and rapists with guns doesn't sound safer to me.

USA has more guns than anywhere else and a much higher crime per 100,00 inhabitants rate than UK. USA is not safer by any metric than UK.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/12/2025 21:48

The US is full of nutters. Doesn’t seem to have made them polite.

So's the UK. Somehow the country insists on continuing to vote for them.

Forget it. OP doesn’t engage with sensible arguments against gun proliferation, nor answer any questions. They’re just going to keep parroting that they feel unsafe and want to defend themselves, despite the presence of guns in any situation making it 100x less safe.

Natsku · 14/12/2025 14:10

I personally think people who resort to attacking my views with insults about my mental health or being a psycho (probably with an intent to try and shut me up) must have limited intelligence as it is often the ‘bullying and ignorant types’ that do this rather than engaging in a dialogue with different views.

I’ve asked you a couple of times why you feel unsafe. You’ve given no specific reasons. This just leads people to believe you’ve been sucked in by right wing rhetoric spread on SM.

Reform aren't looking into easing gun controls. A quote that Farage made in 2014 relating to private gun clubs/ranges and our Olympic team having to travel to Calais to practice has popped up in the mrdia. He's had to clarify that he was talking about shooting ranges, not rolling back the ban on civilians owning firearms.

Interesting how a Reform vote can be secured by any old made up nonsense the voter has read on the internet though, without taking the five seconds required to find out that it was - obviously - not true.

No it isn't. There's a reason that the US is the only country that has such liberal gun laws. Because they are insane laws. In every case, where citizens or the government has had the choice, they have gone with increased gun control. Because sensible people realize that more guns is a very bad idea. You are getting such pushback because your opinion has been shown to result in the opposite of what you want. Increased gun ownership leads to less safety, not more. It has been proven time and time again. And that's even before you get into mass casualty situations and school shootings. You are completely on the wrong. It's not opinion it's a fact. It doesn't matter how unsafe you feel, once other people have guns, you're in greater danger. Even if nobody else got a gun, just you, you're still in more danger, due to the possibility of having the gun taken off you, accidentally shooting yourself, or deliberately shooting yourself. Plus the danger if you accidentally shooting a family member.

You are entitled to your opinion, but your opinion has been proven to be wrong. Facts win out.

Interesting that the people who are against guns are the ones throwing personal comments about me and my views. Not once have I personally attacked your state of mind because you have a different view than me.

It isn't actually "interesting" is it? You're trying to create a link where there isn't one. The fact that you haven't "personally" attacked anyone doesn't mean that you won't be responsible for the downfall of a largely gun-free society if you get your way. Not quite the same as being a little bit mean on an internet forum.

That shows that Reform voters, like the OP, lie at the more gullible end of the brain-donor spectrum. They also have a weird AI photo fetish too.

Based on feedback it almost unanimously looks like the UK is not ready for the ‘right to bear arms’. That’s democracy at work.

It's not that we're 'not ready'. It's that we had a school shooting and decided 'never again'.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/12/2025 16:14

Yes. Dead primary school children is a pretty hard line in the sand. Shame the USA doesn't feel the same.
