Right to bear arms

Another2356 · 13/12/2025 18:19

I lived in the USA for 8 yrs and all my neighbours had guns, as a Brit I totally disagreed with this…. However since returning to the UK over the last 10 years, I’ve started to think they have a point. If UK law changes and I can purchase guns to protect myself and my family, I will absolutely do this. I feel I have the right to protect myself as the police are not available.

But I love seeing videos of Americans shooting and neutralising home invaders. Always cheers me up.

You're a sociopath. You are exactly the sort of person that should never be let near a firearm.

Not a sociopath. Just nice seeing someone get what they deserve? I feel nice seeing people defend themselves from an attack.

I do and feel horrible when a perfectly innocent person is shot. Or when a store is robbed.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/12/2025 11:13

Maybe the OP is imagining having to join the Home Gaird when Putin invades 😆

CuriousKangaroo · 14/12/2025 11:17

If gun ownership were legalised, then there would be more guns around, making you and everyone else far less safe.

The right to bear arms (which is so outdated now anyway) is why there is so much gun violence in America, including in schools. Their solution? More guns. It’s so stupid.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/12/2025 11:17

@Another2356 so apply for a gun license and get a gun 🤷‍♀️ as you can legally do in the UK.

Protect you from what exactly?

I’m presuming other people with guns, that only have them because the law has changed 😂 does the OP not see the issue here?

Another2356 · 14/12/2025 11:20

I no longer feel safe in my own home or honectown. Home security is a false illusion it does not protect you. I have no confidence that the police will attend when called, public walk on by if you are getting hassled, violence against women is increasing, youths are almost feral with minimal parental supervision.

So I don’t go out after dark, I’m aware of my surrounding, I certainly would not walk alone on a public footpath at any time of day.

Maybe carry deep heat spray. You know if your muscles start to pain.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/12/2025 11:24

You don't go out after dark? Mate it gets dark at at the moment at about 3.30pm, well within the normal working day when shops are open and public transport is running. You need a therapist, not a gun.

You need mental health support and/or a large dog (even a small one is off-putting because of the noise they make), not a gun that will almost certainly be taken from you and used against you.

FestiveBauble · 13/12/2025 18:24

I only do if I’m feeling confident, otherwise I’m a concealed carry sort of girl 😂

Hey you need to work out with mean-ass dumbbells!!!

Interesting that the people who are against guns are the ones throwing personal comments about me and my views. Not once have I personally attacked your state of mind because you have a different view than me.

You’re too scared to leave the house at night and won’t walk on certain paths by day. It’s not a personal comment to observe that that’s a disproportionate amount of fear which probably requires mental health support.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 14/12/2025 11:45

My cousin likes in the US and has guns, to protect his livestock from bears and wolves. I am a farmer and could have a shot gun but don't because it is not necessary in any way. Why do you want a gun OP?

Another2356 · 14/12/2025 11:48

Taser would do, but they are also outlawed in this country.

PrincessofWells · 14/12/2025 11:49

I can honestly say there is nothing about lifestyle in the USA from which the UK could benefit from adopting, and that includes their politics, politicians, and laws.

Where do you live that you feel so unsafe that you feel you need guns? What is happening that you feel there is a direct threat to you?
Unfortunately there is a narrative on SM that violent crime is rising and that there is increased threat to women. The reality is that it’s falling. Sadly women have always been at risk ftom men, but not more so now than before.
Gun ownership is not the answer. We can look straight over at the US to see why. The stats on gun deaths is horrifying. We don’t want that here.

Tracey5775 · 14/12/2025 11:50

I don’t think the answer is to introduce personal protection weapons. I understand the OP’s point about feeling communities are no longer safe and I think it is a valid point. Go back 20-30 years ago and as children we played outside, went to local parks without our parents and we never felt unsafe. Nowadays it is unthinkable to allow our children to do the same, it’s no longer a societal norm. Do I think firearms are the answer, absolutely not but I do believe the OP has a very valid point about the country not being safe any longer and it is a very sad state of affairs.

PrincessofWells · 14/12/2025 11:50

And just to erase any doubt I absolutely abhor trump and his type.

Cadenza12 · 14/12/2025 11:51

Right because it's working so well in America 🙄

unsync · 14/12/2025 12:00

When the Constitution was written, automatic weaponry didn't exist. This is the problem with the right to bear arms. It should be limited to revolvers or single shot weaponry. No one needs an AK47, its madness.

The internet didn't exist. Yet the 1st amendment still applies to social media and TV.

I cannot imagine where in the UK you could live that this level of fear would be rational. I would second the poster above who suggested getting some support for your anxiety levels.

I suggest that those who cannot accept that someone may have a different perspective without personally attacking them are perhaps trying to shut down ‘free speech’. Not one person has attempted to explore why I may have a different view point, you have simply disagreed and then added personal derogatory comments. Again most interesting behaviour by those that disagree with me.

It appears that you lack understanding of the concept of free speech.

Nobody has tried to prevent you from expressing your idiotic views about guns. You are absolutely at liberty to express whatever nonsense you wish, as long as you remain within the boundaries of the law, and nobody will try to stop you.

What "freedom of speech" does not require is that any of us should treat your views with a level of respect that they simply do not deserve. We are free to disagree, and we are free to point out how utterly ridiculous you are being by suggesting the introduction of gun laws that would very clearly make the UK much less safe.

You have exercised your right to express your wacko opinions. We have exercised our right to tell you that we consider your opinions to be both stupid and dangerous.

StandFirm · 14/12/2025 12:23

Comtesse · 14/12/2025 09:13

UK law is never going to change. Quite right too.

I dearly hope you're right but I wouldn't count on it if Trump puppet NF becomes prime minister. He's already said he'd look at relaxing gun laws.

Sartre · 14/12/2025 12:25

I find the logic of protecting yourself from other people’s guns by also having a gun utterly absurd. If nobody has a gun, there’s no need to protect yourself from one. The answer is never more weapons.

Clychaugog · 14/12/2025 12:26

Guns make society safer...?! Riiiìght.

Have you checked the US murder stats compared to the uk recently?
