One woman who came here on a 3 month visitor visa 12 years ago, who is a “full time carer” for her sister.

One man who came here on a student visa which was then cancelled because he stopped attending his lectures, who has been here illegally for two years and works cash in hand. Therefore not paying tax or national insurance.

Wtf?! Why did Sky News interview them (and no doubt pay them!) and not turn up with the border force to get them sent home?! This is baffling

When I read this thread I worry about what has happened to my country. How have we all become so obsessed with "illegal immigrants"? Well, I know why: they are a distraction from the real villains- the billionaires (many of whom are forrin, OP!) and who are literally bleeding our country dry. But you focus on a few poor carers and taxi drivers (who are here doing our dirty work) OP.

I hope this influx of frothers on Mumsnet is just down to a targeted campaign by Reformers and not representative of society as a whole. Mumsnet used to be a safe place for intelligent, thoughtful women (generally) it seems like we've been infiltrated by Daily Mail types. Can you all just go back to your Daily Mails please.

Some billionaires aren't good but most have set up successful business employing lots of people and providing the services we use.

Do you not think that a lot of the Afghans who come to the UK a) want to enjoy things like freedom of speech, religion, freedom for women, and entrepreneurship and b) are not the ones who benefit from and love Afghan repressive regimes.
A government or political party (like the Taliban or Reform) is not a culture (like the rich women's dress, music, and education of pre-Taliban Afghanistan, or the acceptance of the best of other cultures including again dress, music, and food in Britain).

The reality is as a country we shouldn’t have billionaires if we have children living below the poverty line, that is not the values of a modern thinking moral society.

If there are people below the poverty line (there always will be) is no-one else allowed to have success and wealth?

Oh, you know — by not paying a real living wage, by casually overcharging for everything, by treating the environment as an inconvenience and cutting costs by abusing it, by outsourcing work to shave a few pennies off costs without bothering to think about what that does to workers. Who is not getting paid a living wage? As far as I know many billionaires create valuable companies that employ lots of people in highly skilled jobs. Maybe one of the reasons we can use the devices we are on to communicate with each other. What are they overcharging on? I don't know.

You do realise illegal tax evasion dwarfs legal tax avoidance? And this is mostly done by small businesses.

@DuncesAreThere if a billionaire forms some company it does not mean everyone in the supply chain is doing great. Warehouse staff, cleaners, drivers, retail workers — all famously rolling in it. Universal credit child benefits etc wouldn’t be a factor if they were.

No one’s saying phones and software have no value. The point is just that “we made cool tech” doesn’t equal “we paid everyone enough to live.” Profits went up. Wages for a lot of people don’t.

Sure some small businesses do plenty of illegal tax evasion. But when billion-dollar firms legally pay less tax than a café, we’re supposed to clap because it’s “efficient”?

The lower skilled jobs always get paid less. It reflects a lack of skill. Nothing about exploitation, they get paid relative to their skills. Nothing about billionaires. Cleaners, drivers, and retail workers get paid low just because it's how it is. In retail the profit margins are notoriously tiny anyway. Many billionaires create highly paid skilled jobs.

The tax gap is mostly from small businesses as I learnt. It's the truth. It's what the data says.

Because take a trip to Bradford, Whitechapel, alum rock Birmingham and see the damage rampant multiculturalism has done. Some places don't feel English anymore.

I got to spend some time in central and eastern Europe this summer. They've resisted pressure from the EU to accept mass migration and it's so nice there. It was like a breath of fresh air.

People that were returned were mostly Albanians I believe because we have a deal to return them. I think Albanians have for the most part stopped coming because they can be returned.

Once you accept that we don't remove people (a few agree to go if they are paid £££ but could well come back) then you realise the only way to tackle the number of asylum seekers is to prevent them coming. That would mean stopping visas for people from countries that tend to claim asylum/can't be returned and removing people to third countries (when they know this will happen people won't come in the first place).

The vast amount of money spent on "processing" people is a complete waste of time as even people whose claim is declined are not removed.
