Sky News segment on visa overstayers tonight

One woman who came here on a 3 month visitor visa 12 years ago, who is a “full time carer” for her sister.

One man who came here on a student visa which was then cancelled because he stopped attending his lectures, who has been here illegally for two years and works cash in hand. Therefore not paying tax or national insurance.

Wtf?! Why did Sky News interview them (and no doubt pay them!) and not turn up with the border force to get them sent home?! This is baffling

Don’t be silly. Whatever your views on OP’s general argument, she doesn’t sound like she’d support people breaking the law in your country. She’s not saying that that’s totally fine. Her argument is “fine to travel, and follow the law when you do”.

I’m certainly not going to defend the behaviour of obnoxious British tourists or claim it’s not an issue.

But it’s baffling that you don’t think there’s a difference between this and immigrants who overstay visas/otherwise stay in a country illegally - who work cash-in hand, don’t pay taxes, may claim benefits, may well put huge pressures on the public purse in terms of the legal and administrative costs of immigration appeals and on the NHS.

Feel free to start your own thread about out the obnoxious Brits abroad (who may well be net contributors to your country’s economy, not that that’s a defence to the obnoxious behaviour and any damage they cause)!

Journalists do this all the time OP. Like programmes about drugs, people smugglers, fraudsters. They interview them, often with faces blurred and voices changed to protect their identity. At the end of the day, they’re journalists, trying to create reports that people will watch. If the criminals knew they’d be reported, they wouldn’t speak to the journalists, and the journalists wouldn’t earn money.

I agree it’s frustrating to watch though. A bit like nature programmes, when a lion kills an antelope, and I find myself wishing the camera crew would intervene!

Everyone has a right to be interviewed for any reason. It's up to the media to decide if they want to report it.

And how are sky encouraging them to stay? They don't pay for interviews. Journalists don't.

Yeah that's the logical upshot of this. Sky interviewing them has bestowed upon all illegal immigrants the right to be interviewed on TV.

And if the tv companies don't interview them it's a beach of their human rights.

And you go to jail if you even text someone privately that you're proud to be British

@AlloaintheMiddle I think you’re struggling to understand the point being made. No one is saying it’s OK to break some laws but not others. They’re simply pointing out that destructive tourists who cause havoc for 2 weeks then go home are not the same as people who stay in a country illegally for years. Regardless of which of those 2 groups you think are “worse”, surely you can understand that they are not comparable?

She has a point, British people as ex-pats and tourists have caused a lot of harm to the world, including pricing out locals from buying property and also white British male sex tourism / child exploitation.

That poster specifically referred to people who come on holiday. Not the ones who buy houses and form ex pat communities.
