Sky News segment on visa overstayers tonight

One woman who came here on a 3 month visitor visa 12 years ago, who is a “full time carer” for her sister.

One man who came here on a student visa which was then cancelled because he stopped attending his lectures, who has been here illegally for two years and works cash in hand. Therefore not paying tax or national insurance.

Wtf?! Why did Sky News interview them (and no doubt pay them!) and not turn up with the border force to get them sent home?! This is baffling

Ok OP, let's just think about this for a minute. Journalists do a really important job that is very separate to the police/borders force. In your world some of the important investigations journalists do wouldn't exist because nobody would talk to Journalists.
Would that be better?

IMO, all overstayers should be removed. If they can break the law this way, then they don’t deserve to live here.

A visa is a privilege, not a right.

BF do not have the resource to remove all the people overstaying. They will advise them to go, but to actually enforce a removal is another matter and not as easy as you think. Plenty of other countries have lots of people overstaying visa’s too.

If this was America, ICE would have deported them.

Why doesn't our home office just remove them.

It’s not as simple as that. We don’t have the detention space for the number of overstayers. Can’t detain children anymore and many are families. Also entitled to appeal, judicial review, the appeal process goes on for years, at which point most are allowed to stay on long residence / human rights. This government is wanting to reduce gov staff not increase so little chance of that changing anytime soon. Finding these people is also a challenge.

Because they don’t have the resource. Some are removed, but very few.

Think we should give them more resources then.

Once Farage gets into power, my 85-year old mother who has lived here for 60 years and has Indefinite Leave to Remain will be here "illegally". I guess people like the OP will be queuing up to grass "criminals" like her up to the Border Agency.
