Because it’s the season to be jolly and everything - I just wondered this really.

i know that MNers are cautious about opening their doors - and I can’t say I blame them.

but do you open the doors to carol singers?

We don't get any round here so not an issue. Do people still do it? We have a village Christmas party with the choir in attendance but nothing door to door.
Yes I would answer if I saw through the camera it was a local group like the school.

I dint know if people still do it tbh as haven’t seen any for years - but it’s a lovely tradition 😊

I’ve never seen or heard of this in real life- only in films.

PinguWoe · 11/12/2025 20:34

I've never had any!

Happyher · 11/12/2025 20:36

Haven’t had any for years and I wouldn’t open the door as I rarely have any cash on me.

Simonjt · 11/12/2025 20:37

They probably phone the police

Suitbox · 11/12/2025 20:37

I haven't seen any carol singers in a decade or so, I reckon.

TheatricalLife · 11/12/2025 20:43

I think the "Father Christmas" on a tractor/car trailer sleigh blasting Christmas music doing a slow tour of the area has kind of replaced the carol singers. We do have that -accompanied by staff from the local preschool knocking on doors collecting money. Always well supported here.

budgiegirl · 11/12/2025 20:45

I haven't had any carol singers round in a couple of decades! But I do help with a Santa Sleigh - Santa on a tow along sleigh, Christmas music playing, Elves collecting for charity, children invited to some and see Santa and have a chocolate.
Almost everyone answers the door.

SeaAndStars · 11/12/2025 20:49

Same as @budgiegirl here. The local RNLI and reserve Fire Fighters do this and the blaring music brings everyone out to throw money in the buckets. On a couple of occasions they've been called out on a shout and Father Christmas and his elves all legged it off to the station.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 11/12/2025 20:50

I didn't know it was still a thing!

I remember once as a child (with DM) in about 1990 singing carols as a joke when we needed to knock a neighbours door for something. But even then it was a thing that wasn't a real thing iyswim.

I've never had carol singers at the door as an adult. We do all go to sing carols outside the village pub on Xmas eve though.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 11/12/2025 20:52

We don't have carol singers around here... and I don't remember any where I grew up, either, apart from the ones that would sing in the park's bandstand or on the chemist's corner in the village! (It was either that, or brass bands).

Personally, I think it would be quite awkward to stand and be greeted by song from as many carol singers as could squeeze themselves into my tiny porch! Also, I rarely have cash.

I did open the door to the neighbours' young twins at Halloween, for their first Trick or Treat. Mind you, all of the neighbours were asked first, and the twins did well out of our little lane!

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 11/12/2025 20:54

In mid 40’s and have never seen this in real life but I would definitely open the door if it happened!

EddyNeddy · 11/12/2025 20:54

My daughters went carol singing with their church youth group every year from the ages of around 8-13, in the late 2000s/early 2010s. They used to get lots of people answering the doors and would collect a good amount of money for charity; we were on their route and always answered the door. But I don’t think the group does it anymore - they haven’t knocked on our door in years. It must have died out with the pandemic.

No, i wouldn't open the door to beggars.

MargaretThursday · 11/12/2025 20:58

We haven't had any round for ages.

About 20 years ago on our estate we had a group of mid-teen lads that were a bit of an issue. One evening we got a knock on the door, and they stood there, Christmas hats on, and gave us a very flat rendition of "We wish you a merry Christmas" and held out a stocking hopefully. Dh told them we had no money to give, but we were making mince pies, would they like one?
The ate them, and left calling out "Merry Christmas", with no more requests for money. The next day we got a card through the door with "thank you for the minse pies" and their names, which was very sweet.
Next door otoh shut the door in their faces and got egged by them at about the same time they put the card through our door, which we did (with our neighbours) chuckle over, as we helped them clean their windows.
Bless their Christmas spirit. 😂

SpottyAardvark · 11/12/2025 20:58

Of course not! People have been kicked off MN for less!

Joking apart, I can’t remember the last time, if ever, carol singers came to my door.

MsSmartShoes · 11/12/2025 20:59

I would love to open the door to Carol Singers, but only if they were good and collecting for charity. I don’t know any to hear three 16 year old kids with hoodies croaking Silent Night and demanding a tenner.

GarlicBreadStan · 11/12/2025 21:11

I've never had carol singers turn up at the door in any of the houses I've lived in, but no, I wouldn't open the door.

Good for them for getting out and trying to bring joy to people, but it's not my type of thing. I don't like Christmas carols/songs all that much. I'll sing them in passing but I don't care enough to listen to one, possibly more, in full. I usually make up daft lyrics to make myself laugh, and I'm not good at hiding my facial expressions so they'd know I was bored. Not only that, but I even cringe at carol singers in movies. At least they can't see that 😅

jezlifecoach · 11/12/2025 23:46

No of course not. I read Mumsnet and have my phone wallpaper as Scrooge.

LakieLady · 12/12/2025 00:01

I can't recall ever having carol singers call, but I wouldn't open the door if they did.

The local Rotary Club did their annual drive round the streets with Christmas music blaring from speakers on the roof of a van, and a Santa on a sleigh on a trailer and I didn't open the door to their collector, either

My butcher has a collecting tin on the counter for the local food bank, and I stuck £5 in there the other day though, so it's not because I'm tight. I just don't like being disturbed of an evening.

Giraffehaver · 12/12/2025 00:12

We never get any or trick or treaters but if we did, we would open the door. Why wouldn't you?

NuffSaidSam · 12/12/2025 00:19

I haven't seen any for about 25 years, but I'd love some to come and knock!

TidyCrow · 12/12/2025 00:19

Only for Mari Lwyd.
