Because it’s the season to be jolly and everything - I just wondered this really.

i know that MNers are cautious about opening their doors - and I can’t say I blame them.

but do you open the doors to carol singers?

I've never had them! But in theory I would. Bit short of figgy pudding.

ACynicalDad · 12/12/2025 00:59

Had a kid for pocket money about 25 years ago, having always done it for charity I thought no thanks, might be softer now!

JDM625 · 12/12/2025 01:00

I've lived in the UK 25yrs and never seen any carol singers!

GreyCloudsLooming · 11/12/2025 20:34

I’ve never seen or heard of this in real life- only in films.

Me neither.

StruggleFlourish · 12/12/2025 01:03

I don't get any Carol singers around here, so I can't answer this question the way that you'd wish, but I would have to say no.

I know it's a jolly thing, but I don't answer the door at night. Times have changed too much in recent years and as a single woman living alone, no, I'm not answering the door.

I feel that if you are so inclined to want to go around singing lovely holiday carols, you should do that in a more controlled environment such as for instance going to a seniors home, or something like that, a place where they would be very happy to see you perform, not afraid to open the door.

InterestedDad37 · 12/12/2025 01:03

Haven't seen or heard doorstep carol singers in many years!

elliejjtiny · 12/12/2025 01:12

We have never had any. The rotary club don't come anywhere near our street either which is a shame.

CharlotteFlax · 12/12/2025 01:14

The last time carol singers knocked at our door was about 35 years ago, and it was unusual then!

Does anyone get carol singers knocking these days?!

TheaBrandt1 · 12/12/2025 01:41

Pretty sure Carol singing hasn’t happened since the early 2000s. My parents had a group in the village that would carol sing mostly church choir people. It was really lovely they sang well rather than being resentful people loved it. The collection was for local charities. Happier times!

Same.

The only exception is that my church does it, but only for people who are church members, who have signed up to have people come and sing. Generally people who are too sick to come to services.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 12/12/2025 02:50

Never seen door to door carol singers and I live somewhere pretty twee. Local choir does do lots of carolling but will be at the Christmas tree for the turning on of the lights at 5pm rather than traipsing round the village.

Octavia64 · 12/12/2025 03:37

I sing in two choirs.

we don’t do door to door carol singing.

i did once do it about twenty years ago but that was more a “round the village” stopping at the pub and the church and the playground to sing a few. It was well publicised in advance.

Schol · 12/12/2025 04:03

There isn’t anywhere I currently live, but I tended to not answer in the past, I don’t celebrate Christmas but the far more pressing reason is I found the awkward staring and just standing there as they sing too awkward for me!

Ponderingwindow · 12/12/2025 04:24

I have never seen Carol singers anywhere other than at an event. Seeing them go
door to door would be surprising.

HelpMeGetThrough · 12/12/2025 04:34

Haven’t had any for years, was a thing when I was a child though (mid 50s now).

Local Rotary Club does Santas Sleigh pulled by a Land Rover, blasting out some tunes. Don’t mind that at all.

I went as part of a group - we did it for charity - a local children’s ward - but this was 1982!!!!

I want to live in a world where it’s permanently 1982

Reminds me of the scene in the Mr Bean Christmas episode.

I don’t like singing or being sung at tbh.

They would find it tricky to get any donation out of us either as we very rarely use cash.

SouthernNights59 · 12/12/2025 05:00

We don't have carol singers at the door here - not the UK - but we do have a couple of the local silver bands sitting on the back of a truck playing, with people knocking on the door to collect donations. And yes, I did answer the door!

Brendahollowayjustlookwhatyouhavedone · 12/12/2025 05:42

Getting visions of channel 5 Christmas films.
I'm late 50s and never saw this.

XWKD · 12/12/2025 05:49

I haven't seen carol singers in decades.

SparklyGlitterballs · 12/12/2025 05:56

Never had any and I'm fine with that as it'd probably set my dog off barking.

Many years ago, when my kids were in primary school, we used to take part in an annual carol singing thing. It was always elderly people we sang to, and they were selected because they were lonely or in need of cheering up. They knew in advance we'd be coming (so no horrible surprises) and after a few songs we'd present the person/couple with a carefully made up hamper of Christmas treats as a gift. No money was accepted from them, and they were pre-warned that we would not be there for money. It was a way of giving back in our little community and the kids loved it too.

This reminds me of when I was away for work a few years ago up in Yorkshire staying in a hotel with a colleague, the week before Christmas.

Sat in the Premier Inn restaurant listening to a local Silver Band playing carols. They were brilliant and made it feel very much like Christmas.

I absolutely love Yorkshire.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 12/12/2025 06:04

We don’t get any. The last ones I had just knocked ON the door and sang a few notes then. Hardly Carol singer’s.

muddyford · 12/12/2025 06:33

The last time we had them was probably early 2000s. When I was young we used to go and also a group from church would go and sing at various care homes. We finished the evening at a beautiful house for mince pies and mulled wine. But the Salvation Army silver band playing carols in the snowy streets was totally magical. I miss that.
