Anyone seen woman arrested for saying f****t in a private text message?

This is completely bizarre. The news is thin on the ground so to see it I would have to link the mail or other obscure sites; but they are talking about this on Sky News abroad so assume it’s legit.

Apparently woman was arrested by 10 officers and dragged naked from a bath tub because she called a person who hospitalised her from assault a faggot in a message ranting to a supposed friend who reported her for using that word.

What is going on in this country?!

Yes sure that’s unpleasant. But is that really illegal? And if she has been hospitalised by this person then do I really care if someone uses bad words - even if they are hateful.

YABU - that’s a perfectly appropriate use of the law
YANBU - WTF is going on in this country!

There'll be a lot more to it.

If you know something I don’t please share as this is bewildering.

How can you say what is going on in this country when you don't know the circumstances really?

I am just going on the reports here and taking them at face value. If anyone wants to present any evidence to the contrary then would love to see it because otherwise yes I am left thinking what the hell is going on!

I can only see this story on a Piers Morgan chat show. Have any news outlets covered it at all? Seems like large parts missing.

Which reports? I couldn't find any.

I haven’t seen this reported anywhere?

No not really, its like the nurse who was racially abused by the convicted male pedophile identifies as a transwomen because she called him a him when discussing the male only procedure he needed, she was suspended and has been reported to the nmc by her hospital and is at risk of being banned from nursing

If someone assaulted me I would not be looking to inflame the situation with them. If they are derranged or unhinged how did she think that was going to turn out? Getting in trouble with the police is probably the least bad outcome. She sounds like an idiot that needs to be told to stand the hell down.

I saw it on sky news yesterday. And on googling I can find mail and other random sites.

I didn’t know it had been on Piers Morgan. Might watch that but that’s not going to give ‘any other side of story’ PPs are saying.

Mum of 4 arrested

'Naked and Terrified': Mum Arrested Over Texts Deemed 'Hate Speech'

A mum of four says police arrested her naked over private texts branded a hate crime, sparking outrage over UK free speech laws.

The only places I can find mentioning this are the outrage-bait accounts on X.

Would be prepared to bet quite a bit of money that's not quite the whole story.

TheVengaBusIsComingMyBusPassIsForthcoming · 09/12/2025 11:24

I've read a little about this, but the information is pretty sparse.

If he assaulted her he should have been arrested and she should have been given justice for sure.

There is no justification for her using homophobic language. She could have called him a wanker, said she hated him etc, why jump straight to homophobia? Especially with someone that she doesn't know well, as they reported her (I think it was a colleague, but details are vague so that may not be true).

On the face of it, from the little that's in the press, it seems very heavy handed, but they clearly had justification for it or that amount of officers wouldn't have been approved in the first place.

From what I can gather the details have been put out by her and her friends so it's going to be very bias reporting.

The lady's name is Elizabeth Kinney and she was convicted of a hate crime, her attacker was not arrested.

The IB Times is notoriously problematic in terms of credibility.

The DM article makes no mention of what you claimed in your OP.

ShesTheAlbatross · 09/12/2025 11:27

She was reported by the person she texted, not the person she said attacked her. And the texts were not read out in court so I’m not sure how anyone can say it was an overreaction or not?
She was charged under the malicious communications act because the texts were abusive as well as homophobic and distressed the person she texted.

Whywhywhyyyy · 09/12/2025 11:27

I she is calling someone a faggot to their face in an abusive manner then perhaps that’s abusive.

But to say to someone else who isn’t the individual - I didn’t think that could be a hate crime. No matter how offensive. And that’s without the assault allegation.

Yes lets make sure a woman who is attacked is calm and pleasant about the man who attacked her else...10 officers might come and drag her out of the bathtub naked. I mean, it's what she deserved for having an opinion about the man that attacked and hospitalised her.

It’s reported in the down market newspapers and there’s a link to the Daily Mail.

https://mol.im/a/15302729

It appears the reporting is poor because the headline is click bait and less interesting with what I suspect is the truth. Reading between the lines she’s been charged with harassment but because of the use of that word it’s been upgraded to a hate crime and sentenced according to that.

KimberleyClark · 09/12/2025 11:29

I don’t see what being gay has to do with his having assaulted her. If I had been assaulted by a man gay or otherwise I would call him a lot of things but a homophobic slur probably would not be one of them.

I don't agree with homophobia. But I also dont agree with this recent fetish of people monitoring other people's language and requiring them to "justify" themselves. We are talking about something that is either a criminal offence (in which case it is illegal) or not a criminal offence (in which case people can use whatever words they chose).

Clearly what she said is a criminal offence given that she was convinced.

Acafan · 09/12/2025 11:33

What she did is illegal. It's malicious communications under the terms of the 1988 act, because it's grossly offensive and it caused distress to the recipient, and the offense is made more serious because the language is homophobic. It's no defence that she didn't know it was a crime. FWIW, she plead guilty, from what I can understand of the reporting.

It doesn't matter if we don't care about this particular case: we accept that everyone in the country has to follow the law.

It doesn't actually matter for the purposes of the offense that she was allegedly assaulted by the man she's describing - though that's obviously awful. The recipient of the message reported it to the police and the police and CPS took action. If they haven't prosecuted the assault, that's a separate matter.

TheVengaBusIsComingMyBusPassIsForthcoming · 09/12/2025 11:31

"Convinced" of what.

We used to have free speech in this country. Which included the freedom to offend. What is happening these days is very scary. Combined with the attempt to restrict the use of juries, which seem to be the only thing stopping the state completely controlling what people can and cannot say.
