Brothers son smokes it. Holds down a job and his financial commitments.
Hasn't progressed to any other drugs.
Been doing it for some years.
Its never spoken about. I just know he does.
I dont really have anyone to ask but i just thought I'd ask you mumsnetters.
It is common. He's mid thirties.

I think it will depend upon people’s social circle and whilst it was very normal when I was at university and for a few years afterwards, I don’t know anyone now who smokes (or admits to it).

Maddy70 · 08/12/2025 13:47

I think In my whole friendship group (large group ) 3/4 smoke or use cannabis gummies

SushiDisco · 08/12/2025 13:47

Me and my partner enjoyed it in the evenings pre children, he is one of the most intelligent people i know and owns a very successful company and like your brothers son hasn’t progressed to any other drugs.
If used appropriately it can be pretty beneficial (helps anxiety, pain management, creativity etc) it’s when people abuse it spending all day smoking it, it becomes a problem.

mondaytosunday · 08/12/2025 13:49

I never smoked it but I think most of my friends kids have, usually the boys. Two thirds are privately educated. Quite alot of my co-hort did at uni.

MysteryNameChange · 08/12/2025 13:50

It's pretty common in my social circle. Professionals in 30s/40s. I'm not sure it would be known through work colleagues etc. come to think of it, I don't know any of my school mum friends who smoke weed.

ForMyNextTrickIWillMakeThisVodkaDisappear · 08/12/2025 14:02

I know plenty of people who smoke/used to smoke and who had jobs and kids and haven’t used anything else. I don’t and never have (can’t stand the smell). People who do coke I steer clear of though- even when they “only do it occasionally” on a night out they are so obnoxious and boring.

TempestTost · 08/12/2025 14:08

I think it varies a lot by region, social class, and probably other things as well.

I am not in the UK, and pot is legal where I live. In my region about a third of the population use it regularly. About 6% daily. These are the highest rates of use in my country. My kids report that at their rural school, lots of kids are using it regularly, most start in their early teens.

They have had a significant increase, since legalisation, of people being admitted to hospital for psychosis related to excessive use.

kittywittyandpretty · 08/12/2025 14:13

I can only comment about walking down the street and getting it wafted in your face, but it seems to be bloody everywhere where I live.
It’s not a bad town, but not affluent. They’re just affluent bits.
A new low in society though was when we went to Alton Towers and it was all over the place there as well. I realise it was probably teens but you might have thought they’d be able to reign it in with little children around.

EarlofShrewsbury · 08/12/2025 14:33

Cannabis has been legal for medical use in the UK since 2018.

I'm prescribed it and I get it in flower form (same as street cannabis) I vape it with a dry herb vaporiser, I don't smoke it.

I know 4 other people who are prescribed it. I believe there are close to 100k prescribed it in the UK.

The smell of cannabis isn't always due to illegal activity.

Muffsies · 08/12/2025 14:36

I've smoked it a few times, when i was a young adult, and more recently in my 40s. I wasn't keen myself, I don't like the detached feeling and don't find that relaxing, it's more of a disconnected rather than satsfaction/contented feeling to me. It can also cause feelings of agitation and paranoia in some people, I have witnessed that effect many times. When I look at some of the guys I used to smoke it with, many of them have not made much of their lives, they probably wouldn't have done much anyway, but the weed just made them even less likely to do anything imho.

I believe it is a lot more common now, and the drug is quite a bit stronger, too. I don't think it's safe for younger people to use whilst their brains are developing, especially teenagers. If you're over 25 and using it responsibly without adverse reactions it's probably ok, but who knows?

AstoriaQueen · 08/12/2025 14:41

I smoke daily as does my boyfriend. He's in the arts but I work for the government. Both professionals and I have 3 children.

I believe it can be part of a healthy stable lifestyle. I work out 5 times a week and I am very motivated. My teeth are beautiful and I look after my skin. It helps with my mental health and in all honesty, i just love how it feels after a hard day. You'd probably never know and possibly even be surprised.

That being said, for full disclosure, I dont know anyone else who smokes it or anyone who would admit it.

ChamonixMountainBum · 08/12/2025 14:43

Its seems that every time I step outside a get a waft of weed.

ComfortFoodCafe · 08/12/2025 14:44

Very common! In the chronic pain community many use it as pain relief.

CharlotteLightandDark · 08/12/2025 14:45

More people I know smoke it than don’t, only one of which doesn’t work and that’s because of his epilepsy and other conditions.

The rest of us are all middle-ish class professionals and perfectly respectable members of society

Dontyoulooktired · 08/12/2025 14:48

Very common where I live. Parents smoke it on the school run (how I wish I was exaggerating).

I walk my dog in the park and there’s always someone smoking weed, the area fucking stinks of it.

I’m really upset my children know the smell of it. I didn’t even know what weed was when I was a child, let alone be able to tell the smell of it on the street.

I do live in a shithole though.

HushTheNoise · 08/12/2025 14:51

Well, given that I smell it from work men's vans when I'm driving to work in the morning, quite a few people. And when walking down the street. Grim. I don't know anyone personally who does, I only know about two friends who smoke cigarettes though so.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/12/2025 14:51

Yes, I do.

Only about once a week and not if I have work the next day.

Ablondiebutagoody · 08/12/2025 14:52

Very common. Some people can handle it like others would a drink and live a totally normal life. Others can't, get super lazy, psychologically addicted and don't like leaving the house. I'm that second one. It's a real shame.

Teenagerantruns · 08/12/2025 14:52

When l lived in London, very common, lots of friends smoked, smelt it everywhere, lots of my friends in London still smoke. Hold down good jobs, have homes.
Now l love in middle of nowhere l only l know one couple who smoke regularly, dont really smell it anywhere.

Bluejaysforthewin · 08/12/2025 14:57

Depends where you live. North America very common. From teens to adult professionals and everyone in between. I've always got a few pre rolls and some gummies at home. If a friend comes over we will often sit outside and share a doobie over coffee.

Thepeopleversuswork · 08/12/2025 14:57

Depends on your social circle.

In some circles its more or less ubiquitous, in others it's taboo.

When I was in my 20s and 30s almost everyone I knew smoked it at least occasionally. I'm in my early 50s now and almost no one I know does, mainly because people are busy, have stressful jobs and kids and think about their health. I haven't touched it for over 25 years. But if you live in London it's very apparent that a lot of people use it.

I used it without any harm for years (other than the fact I was smoking it and the possible opportunity cost of flaking out of things because I was stoned). I wouldn't be thrilled if my DD took it up but I'm also grown-up enough to know that lots of people do it without any harm coming to them.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 08/12/2025 15:03

I don’t think anyone in my friendship group smokes it, but the town I live in you get a waft of it regularly, either by walking past a house or someone in a supermarket stinks of it 😷

LlynTegid · 08/12/2025 15:08

Far too common.

People who don't care or know about the supply chain, never mind the impacts on their own health.

Minnie798 · 08/12/2025 15:08

No one in my social circle smokes weed, but I suspect it is very common in the UK.
I'm in favour of legalisation.

Dulcie6 · 08/12/2025 15:09

I’m not sure it’s all that common. None of my friends do this (although did when they were like 18).

one of my friends partner’s smokes it non stop.

The only people I know of that smoke weed in their 30’s are all ‘wasters’ and v depressed. A fair few of them have committed suicide.
