Brothers son smokes it. Holds down a job and his financial commitments.
Hasn't progressed to any other drugs.
Been doing it for some years.
Its never spoken about. I just know he does.
I dont really have anyone to ask but i just thought I'd ask you mumsnetters.
It is common. He's mid thirties.

If the stink out in town on a weekend is anything to go by, it's more common than you might think. That and really cheap and nasty tobacco.

Elektra1 · 08/12/2025 18:20

A lot of my friends smoke it/have gummies/get it on prescription (for things like ADHD). I went to Canada recently for work and noticed there was a weed dispensary on every street corner. Inside they had “menus” with information about the strength of each type (not sure that’s the right word!), and I understand (from my daughter who went to California recently) that if you go in the staff can sell you mild/medium/strong effect depending on what you want. Personally I think we should have this here, since that would reduce the amount of cannabis sold on the street which is cut with spice or whatever. People are going to do it anyway; harm can be reduced by having a regulated supply chain.

I think In my whole friendship group (large group ) 3/4 smoke or use cannabis gummies

Same. It's very common and I know plenty of professional people with good jobs who partake. It has a weird stigma attached, but is significantly better than alcohol imo.

Not to mention tax revenue.

I'm 58, held down a professional job all my life.
I take edibles now rather than smoking - its less harmful.
I love it - it is a form of self medication but I vastly prefer it to alcohol.

Same, edibles are great!

Depends what age group

16-25 a high number of regular users most of ds friends do regularly (17)

30+ less so

40+ a few the regulars are usually utter cannabis bores

That's interesting, 16-25 is the group that should really be avoiding it.

I smoke daily as does my boyfriend. He's in the arts but I work for the government. Both professionals and I have 3 children.

I believe it can be part of a healthy stable lifestyle. I work out 5 times a week and I am very motivated. My teeth are beautiful and I look after my skin. It helps with my mental health and in all honesty, i just love how it feels after a hard day. You'd probably never know and possibly even be surprised.

That being said, for full disclosure, I dont know anyone else who smokes it or anyone who would admit it.

Luckily for your 3 DCs, they haven’t been trafficked to the UK locked in large warehouses by some very nasty criminal gangs under threat and made to grow the stuff.

Google modern day slavery.

Yes it is

but what can you tell a young person that thinks they know everything and what’s to experiment we think we know it all when younger

I'm in Canada, most in my province get it from the reserve rather than an officially licensed store. God knows where the reserve weed comes from.

California is facing huge problems with drug use and very poor mh facilities

I am actually for legalising cannabis but not in the way it has been done in California and very soon after legalising there were calls from many for this to be managed better

FollowSpot · 08/12/2025 19:56

It’s incredibly common.

These days my friends don’t. They did when we were in our 20s and 30s.

I am sure most of ours and friends Dcs smoked it recreationally occasionally from age 15 or 16

Cocaine use is also very common amongst professionals in young middle age in my friendship and acquaintance circles.

Xmaswear · 08/12/2025 20:04

More common than you think. Loads of dc are taken into care because of it. Not ok to be stoned in charge of a dc. Just imagine being that dc. A house that stinks of weed. I am not in favour of legalising it. We regularly get toddlers wandering round the streets in nappies for the police to find comatose parents at home.

Gardener82 · 08/12/2025 20:10

Most of my friends, some regularly, some (like my husband) a few times a year.
All between 40-55 all with professional careers.

Wasywasydoodah · 08/12/2025 20:17

People think it’s harmless and many people do smoke it without much adverse impact. But many people become psychologically addicted, incapable of caring properly for their children, plummeting mental health, psychosis, babies born early and sick due to smoking in pregnancy, spending all the family money, mood disturbance and aggression. I hate the stuff because I see so much harm.

I’ve noticed a lot of talk of “professionals” smoking weed on this thread.

Where I am, it’s mainly the scumbags, which there are a lot of.

At my dds reception nativity last year, a few parents turned up stinking of weed. They couldn’t even go and watch their 4 year old in a play without smoking on the way up.

A friend of mine is works in a local pre school and she said so many children reek of it. You open up their bags and their spare clothes stink.

cakewitch · 08/12/2025 20:21

My DH smokes every day. He never appears stoned and he only smokes tiny amounts at a time. It relaxes him, it doesnt cause him or anyone around him any problems, he uses it in moderation and in private. Most of the people we both know, do smoke it too. As with any mind altering substance, it depends on the person. Some people we know can , and will smoke all day, and it has damaged them, same as alcohol can do in excess.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 08/12/2025 20:34

I don’t drink or smoke tobacco and I go to the gym and don’t eat many treats.
I do have an edible most weekends.
I am a working parent and I have aging parents so some evenings I need to chill out and switch off. I am fine the next day (up at 7.30am for kids football etc).
I have a semi-professional job and I don’t think anyone would guess that I have some weed now and then, my friends do it too, they have way better, more responsible jobs than I do.

I didn’t use it in pregnancy and I spend about £8 a week, I don’t have take outs but its less than a pizza would cost.
It helps my mental health as I find it hard to tune out everything in life - worrying about my parents and children, drama at work bla bla bla.

I think it's really surprising how many people seem to think it is ok to smoke and drive. Some who would not drink drive even.

gogomomo2 · 08/12/2025 20:40

Based on the stench around where I live (not cheap!) very common.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 08/12/2025 20:40

I smoke it, only at nights, for chronic pain when it's particularly bad. I didn't smoke it as a teen because it made me feel sick. I found out later that it was down to my heavy drinking and, as I've been sober for many years, it no longer makes me sick.

I'd say about half the people I know smoke weed occasionally, and these are stable middle aged people, though I probably know a lot of creative, arty types.

Toogoodtowaste · 08/12/2025 20:40

Does everyone using grow their own or are you just unbothered about the criminal production aspect of it and supporting organised crime. Dealers rarely 'just' sell cannabis, right?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/12/2025 20:48

Used to know loads of people that smoked it. All but a couple grew out of it in their late 30s, the two remaining ones also drink heavily - and it shows.

It used to be very common around here, so you'd smell it coming from almost every third car or van when walking down the road, but it seems to have reduced in prevalence over the last year.

Topaz67 · 08/12/2025 20:50

Smell it and see it when we’re out in the next town, but not so much here as average age is much higher than usual user group. Went to a city in the North last month and a man was walking through the Christmas market with his family, smoking weed. Felt quite sad for the children. They stopped and spoke to another family and it just seemed so normal. 😞
