To be craving a glass of wine at 3pm

Pavementworrier · 07/12/2025 15:12

Is it the dark nights giving me dopamine issues? I mean I know people can have a glass of wine at 3pm I am just not usually in the mood plus I know it will make me really sleepy about an hour later.

I've just bought a sad lamp will report back but meantime if anyone has any other ideas for midwinter dopamine id be very grateful!

Yanbu, i'm craving a glass as well!

ComfortFoodCafe · 07/12/2025 15:22

Hate to say it but if your craving acohol you might have a bit of a problem!

Delatron · 07/12/2025 15:22

It can get quite depressing I agree -
and boring when it’s dark at 4.

I have ADHD so have to be really careful with dopamine and have to focus on many ways to increase it.

Science shows going out in the morning as soon as it’s light can give a nice dopamine hit. Exercise also helps. No screens for the first 30 minutes of the day. I use a sad lamp when I’m struggling.

I hate winter and all the talk of ‘cosy’. However I try and lean in to it a little more. So rather than rushing around and saying yes to everything. Slow down and book a few treats in for yourself if possible.

I can see why animals hibernate. The book ‘Wintering’ is really good.

And boringly a healthy diet can boost mood. I also take lions mane supplements to boost focus and motivation and saffron. Vitamin D can also help.

We went to a Christmas market/fair today and made the mistake of having a glass of mulled wine which was delicious. We've just got home and all I want to do is light the fire and make more mulled wine.

Like you I know that, if I do, I'll be asleep on the sofa before I know it but it is Sooooo tempting

OSTMusTisNT · 07/12/2025 15:24

Craving? No, I never crave alcohol.

Fancying? Yes, it's Sunday afternoon, nearly time to close the curtains and I could easily fancy sharing a bottle of wine with DH over dinner.

Yeaah that's troubled old me - thinking about a thing that's unusual and commenting on it 🤣

It depends what you mean by “craving”.

If you’re thinking “ooh a glass of wine would go down really nicely now, as a rare treat, you’re fine.

If you’re white-knuckling it, counting down the minutes until it’s acceptable to pour a glass, and you do this most days, you have a problem.

Having a siesta now, following a couple of glasses of a nice red with a roast lunch. Can thoroughly reccomend it!

You can crave, it's what you do that matters. I don't keep alcohol in the house and certain food, as I don't trust myself.

Fgs! I often crave a glass of wine, a fag and a great slab of chocolate but it doesn’t mean I give in to it!

lol if you’re craving some beef and Yorkshire pudding op you may have a problem. 😄

I could murder, let alone crave, a whole bottle of highest percentage red and watch some absolute non-christmassy shit on the TV because I'm totally fed up, I can't be arsed with anything or anyone, I just started HRT and it's given me the worst period ever plus a low mood from hell and frankly an alcohol dependence is well down the list of things for me to give a fuck about.

I'm not going to do it though. I made some tea instead. Fucking tea. I want someone to come and make me a hot water bottle and a roast.

I know, right. I have my Christmas wines in the kitchen right now am I making a bath of them no. A big frosty glass of fizz would be delectable, tho.

Trust me, my parents used to say this “oh its only a glass!” In their sixties now and can’t go a few simple days without a drink! Its not funny.

If you've spent any amount of time with my boss, it'd be vodka instead of wine. I get what you mean, though. I hate this time of year. December 21st is the solstice, so the daylight hours will begin to stretch out again.

@OSTMusTisNT

closing the curtains for the night at 4pm is so oppressive - why would you do that?

Can't wait! Never used to be bothered but I've slept for most of the weekend and still feel tired and in need of a rush

Console yourself with the fact that in 2 weeks’ time the days will start to get LONGER. 🙌

Edit: DP and I consume more wine in the apartment during winter because we have more cosy nights in binge-watching series than we do in warmer months. However I wouldn’t say we drink more, because we’d be having the same if not more alcohol in rooftop bars and beer gardens through summer!

That being said, we got through 4 bottles of red wine Thursday night through Saturday night between us, which is a lot. 🙃

How do we get dopamine rushes?? I need - especially in winter. Besides exercise, sex, online shopping, anything else?
