To be craving a glass of wine at 3pm

Pavementworrier · 07/12/2025 15:12

Is it the dark nights giving me dopamine issues? I mean I know people can have a glass of wine at 3pm I am just not usually in the mood plus I know it will make me really sleepy about an hour later.

I've just bought a sad lamp will report back but meantime if anyone has any other ideas for midwinter dopamine id be very grateful!

I am today. Had a stressful weekend so DH and I are watching a film and having wine and nibbles.

mondaytosunday · 07/12/2025 16:05

I don’t understand when people say it’s boring when it gets dark. We have electricity people! I can’t believe everyone saying this is engaged in outdoor pursuits that requires daylight.
But I digress. No I don’t crave or want wine during the day, no matter if the sun has gone down. And actually I stopped drinking cold turkey Sept 1 and don’t even think about it now. But believe you me will be cracking open a bottle Christmas Eve!

Ever lived in Scotland in December?

Sounds lush! Which film?

DP and I got through ‘Malice’ on Amazon Prime in 3 nights over copious glasses of red and a charcuterie board (we bought so much food that we might actually having a FOURTH night of this for dinner tonight…!)

Gosh, I’m making winter sound great when I am 100% NOT a winter person. 😅

@mondaytosunday

yeah but there’s less you can do in the dark. Also it not just dark but freezing cold and raining where I live so that restricts things further. I hate winter

whiteroseredrose · 07/12/2025 16:12

@Crushed23The Wonder. Not exactly a joyous film. DH chose it.

Well we're biologically programmed to suffer in the absence of light

Which is all fine and dandy until there's a powercut 😂

It’s really dark?! I don’t want people to see me through the windows with my lights on.

thought that was normal?! It’s tipping it down, dark and windy.

Waitingfordoggo · 07/12/2025 16:28

YABU- wine is minging. I used to LOVE it but perimeno utterly destroyed my tolerance. I stopped drinking wine about ten years ago and now can’t understand how I ever enjoyed it- I absolutely hate the taste. I stick to tea now! Each to their own though.

As for closing the curtains and hunkering down mid afternoon- it’s ok at first but the novelty has worn off now. Some of us like to be outside as much as possible and the opportunities for that are much more limited this time of year and that impacts my MH. In midsummer I can be on the beach with my dog at 10pm and still have a bit of light- I absolutely love that.

But THANK YOU to everyone who’s pointed out that the shortest day isn’t far away now- I’d sort of lost track of that and there is definitely a psychological switch for me when we get to that date.

It is normal! Who sits there with their curtains open in the dark?

Because it’s dark?

Delatron · 07/12/2025 16:32

And yes it is oppressive - that’s the dark not the curtains.

Of course when it’s light and warm and sunny at 4pm there’s loads more you can do outside. I don’t know why people argue this point. Nobody wants to wander about in the dark unless they have to. Whereas a nice sunny evening stroll by the river with the dog is lovely.

Or sitting outside for a drink with friends

Or sitting with a book in the garden.

Going for a run (don’t want to run in the dark).

Pavementworrier · 07/12/2025 16:33

Roll on midsummer everyone!!!!

Wonder if I can harness hygge a bit more effectively meantime

Being on the beach with your dog at 10pm in the summer sounds amazing!

The dark at 4pm is so restrictive. The only people that like it are those that are happy to sit on the sofa for hours and hours.

me! I feel too hemmed in with the curtains closed. and also makes me feel like it’s way later than it is.

Who’s gonna be looking in anyway?? And who cares if they do anyway unless you’re up to no good 😜 @rainbowsandraspberrygin

Do alcoholics feel in physical pain if they dont have a drink. Ive never really understood how it works.

In my experience, people who say things like this often have quite the unchecked biscuit habit themselves.

its way more complex than that. But I suspect you knew that really.
