Would you tolerate DP spending £7k on World Cup trip?

Rigaboni · 06/12/2025 18:26

DP declared he is travelling to the World Cup and will be staying in Boston for 10 nights, to watch two games. He will miss DDs 2nd birthday. It will cost £4k for flights and hotels, perhaps around £2k spending money and maybe around £1k for tickets.

We have separate finances, I earn a bit more. We pay a percentage of our salary in to a joint account to cover joint bills.

How would you feel about this?

YABU = it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and you can always earn more money
YANBU = I wouldn’t tolerate him treating himself to a £7k solo holiday

How long has he taken to save £2k and is that to the detriment of household savings?

No idea, but I’d imagine at least 9 months. We pay a set amount to joint savings each month. We had a decent joint savings pot but got an extension a year ago meaning joint savings are pretty low now. My worry is if something big happens, such as the boiler going, it’s me who’s going to have to stump up the extra cash

No debt and he informs me he has £2k put aside and will put his £600 bonus towards it. It still leaves a massive shortfall

So how much do you personally have in savings @Rigaboni ?

I think you need to tell him that whilst you understand how important this is and if he wants to see group matches in the 2028 Euros in 2.5 years you are on board with it he has to be realistic

he has saved probably 20% of what he needs and has little to no time to save the remaining 80% and you aren’t prepared to sacrifice either for that level of savings he just doesn’t have the money. 10 days is a false economy as well because even though he will get two matches the amount he will spend is through the roof.

if he can find one match coming in at 5K so he has 50% saved so flights, cheap cheap hotel and one ticket you are supportive but you cannot have Scotland int he World Cup being the financial priority for the next 5 years of your life

Sorry I probably wasn’t clear in my previous replies. He has booked flights and accommodation already

Does he ever go to see Scotland play normally?

This is that I thought. It's not a 10th birthday or anything. WC is a once in a lifetime opportunity whilst the birthday will be swiftly forgotten. Nobody will be thinking back to 2nd bday when she's 4yo.

Although will be lolz if England get knocked out straight away. 😂

Thing is he can’t afford it. With his income, and given compounding interest, it sounds like it will take him at least five years to
pay it off - at least five years of no family holidays, no necessary home improvements being done, no savings, no money for emergencies etc. That’s not ok.

And I’d imagine he’d be delighted if England were knocked out given that he’s Scottish!

And spent how much?
Has he bought tickets yet or will he be one of those sad people holding up a cardboard sign asking for tickets

I have to say this would cross a boundary for me and be a real deal breaker - and I like football went to last years Euros and will plan on going to the 2028 ones as well

@Rigaboni he has looked up where the ground is hasn’t he and a plan to get there

berlinbaby2025 · 07/12/2025 12:16

Tickets are selling quickly so unless he books soon he won’t be going.

sittingonabeach · 07/12/2025 12:17

@Rigaboni did he book these things before even checking with you about childcare, never mind anything else re finances, savings etc

Yikes. What if he doesn't get the tickets?

He may not have costed food or travel insurance (essential including health cover) in properly either.

berlinbaby2025 · 07/12/2025 12:40

He is really stupid for not buying the match tickets alongside the flights and accommodation.

But the tickets haven’t even been released yet have they? Has he at least made sure it’s fully refundable if he doesn’t get a ticket?

Edit: I just looked and saw they’ve been released but scotlands first game is over £1000 a ticket!

Hiptothisjive · 07/12/2025 12:50

OP you are hugely exaggerating the figures. No way it costs 4k for flights and a hotel for that long. 2k spending money for the week - again hugely exaggerated. Tickets aren’t that much. You want to be annoyed and that’s fine but at least be realistic about the costs.

Currently flights to Boston over that time going Saturday to Saturday are £600-£800.

opencecilgee · 07/12/2025 13:00

He is being unreasonable

My DP loves football. Always applies for tickets , has been to several Euro and World Cup events but even he thinks the America world cup is out of reach

CurlewKate · 07/12/2025 13:02

The birthday isn’t an issue-he’s 2. He can have a moved birthday or multiple birthdays.

Really? I think he is underplaying yes the tickets should be cheaper but can you find one under £900 because I can’t.

Say it is 800 for flights (say1k for parking) and British Airways with luggage is 1500 cheapest

then spends - this will be a drinking holiday no doubt so 200 a day for 3 meals and drinks in Boston doesn’t go far

then the cheapest hotel for booking.com for those dates is 1800 each and that is the cheapest I can quite well imagine mid range is 3k

her figures do add up

his ticket figures don’t and neither do yours

whynotwhatknot · 07/12/2025 13:13

so hes booked it woithout discussion and doesnt even have tickets yet

i would rethink this relationship

L0bstersLass · 07/12/2025 13:35

jayjer · 07/12/2025 00:39

me and husband going from Scotland as it may be a once in a lifetime experience . Lucky to have family childcare. We most likely won’t get match tickets but happy just to soak up the experience. So far we have paid 1300 for return flights to jfk from Manchester and £400 for 5 nights in a new jersey hotel. £100 for a one night hotel in Boston for night of the game (this is all for 2 adults). Still have to book a train for $30 each to get from new jersey to Boston.
so wondering why it’s 7k???

Likely because he's factoring in the match tickets which will be very pricey.

YouHaveAnArse · 07/12/2025 13:54

It's not even the cost of the tickets - which are notoriously expensive this time round because Fifa don't give a fuck about actual fans - it's being able to actually get one.

I see American fans on forums for the PL club I support not getting why you can't just fly to the UK and throw money at the secondary market to get a ticket for a game , and getting angry that there are things like season tickets and local sales when they see themselves as bigger fans for paying £10k every time they come and see their team and don't see why "local fans" should be prioritised. The way the US sells sports tickets means this is going to be a total clusterfuck and anything that's still available by the time he has the money is going to be multiple thousands.

No they don’t add up if he is spending spending spending. Hotels include breakfast. Flights are £580 with BA on skyscanner.

so OP said £4k flights and hotels but it’s actually closer to £2.5k

Spending for 7 days if breakfast is included and it isn’t steak dinner - surely lunches are more fast food are 1k not 2k.

Tickets as part of the draw are a fraction of that price. Through ticket site yeah expensive.

Deoends how he wants to go and travel. Cost is 4k at most.

surprisebaby12 · 07/12/2025 14:00

The key information was missing in your post, and will absolutely skew the results. The fact he’s accruing debt at the expense of your family, costing you a years of family holidays and necessary home improvements, is completely unreasonable.

Well unless he’s got £4k saved he’s still incurring debt.

Which Boston hotel?

And which $30 train?
