To have said that women should be drafted equally to men??

Chatting to a group of friends about the state of the world etc and while in theory I’m against conscription and forced national military service I did say that I think it’s right that there is more equality in girls/women being treated the same as boys/men in the countries that have service.
One friend who has 3 teen girls really had a go at me and got very upset. I have a teen boy and teen girl. While I hate the idea of EITHER being forced to enter the military I think they should be treated equally ( roles allowing - ie some combat roles aren’t open to women) if it came to it. ‘it’ being an actual war with Russia and/or its allies.

it got VERY heated, even though I and another friend pointed out that there are many non-combat roles in the military. And that if we did end up in a World War we’d likely have a role in it regardless of sex or age.

YABU - only men should be drafted
YANBU - in the modern world both sexes should serve in the military.

This magical drone and cyclops warfare was the thinking our dear leaders have had for the last 20 or so years, resulting in an army that can no longer fill Wembley stadium.
Drones and clever computer viruses don't take and hold land, infantry does.
And as the Russian invasion of Ukraine has shown, trench warfare is here to stay. Hence why all European countries, including ourselves and massively rearming, buying new tanks, and thinking of ways to increase the numbers.

I didn’t say there wouldn’t be a land war. I said not likely on UK soil.

IBorAlevels · 05/12/2025 12:08

Ideologically I am not opposed to women being conscripted. Then you actually look at the sexual offences within the military and realise they are in no way capable of looking after women before you factor in an actual war and think twice.

Soontobe60 · 05/12/2025 12:10

The only issue I can see with male and female conscript is that you could end up with children whose parents are both of conscription age being left with neither parent to look after them. That needs to be addressed.

It's likely we will have drone warfare though. I thought that point has been made over and over. Still not sure why no one seems to have given civilians any kind of warning or advice on how to deal with them if I am honest.

EINSEINSNULL · 05/12/2025 12:12

Nobody should be forced to fight, end of story.

Stompythedinosaur · 05/12/2025 12:13

The equality I want is "no one should be conscripted".

JHound · 05/12/2025 12:13

Enlist yes, serve at the front no.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/12/2025 12:05

Yes of course we should as women. If it was good enough for QE2 it’s good enough for me. I don’t need a penis to operate a drone to kill Putin.

I don't want to be conscripted or for my DD to be. So I'd argue that no one should be conscripted rather than that females should be exempt.

But operating a drone to kill Putin? Sign me up! My 70-something DM would also volunteer for that task, despite her poor eyesight.

I didn’t say there wouldn’t be a land war. I said not likely on UK soil.

The first world war was fought on mainland Europe.
The second world war was fought on mainland Europe (poor Jersey). How many British (including commonwealth men and women died from that?)
And that was before NATO.
The UK is part of NATO. That means any invasion of a NATO ally is treated as an attack on the UK.
Look at a list of NATO members, we'll be involved in pretty much any war in Europe.

In the modern world the differences between the sexes don't go away.

I would be led by soldiers and military leaders on this: if they say yes, sex should not impact on this then fine. If they say no, I'd listen to why.

That’s where I am with this too.

Too many stories of female recruits suffering abuse to say that the burden of military service is the same for men and women.

Is there is another war, once the snowflakes are excluded they are going to have to enlist everyone. I don't think women can then be like "oh we didn't mean that much equality". I'd rather we didn't have another war.

Conscripts should be given roles which suit their skills so you might imagine men and women would sometimes get assigned different roles but surely there can be no good argument for forcing men into battle and not women? What was her argument?

I don't think anyone should be conscripted but as a feminist, I certainly don't think girls and women should be!

  • Women are at far more risk of sexual violence - both from the enemy and from their own "side".
  • Women are generally weaker than men and would fare less well in hand-to-hand combat if it should come to that.
  • Most (if not all) conflict has been started by men, and generally women are not as keen to inflict violence on others in my experience!
Anyway, I have two sons and a daughter and I don't want any of them to be involved in war or violence of any kind but I can't understand how some people think it is "feminist" not to recognize that men and women are not the same.

Snowflakes?
(will you be stepping up?)

SpringIsCome · 05/12/2025 12:23

The British military can't stop abusing women and in UK and Kenya, so no, women and girls should not be conscripted - unless to a completely separate to men force.

Justlostmybagel · 05/12/2025 11:52

It was tongue in cheek.

I don't think anyone should be conscripted.

I think we should all be willing to defend the freedoms we have, collectively, if we have to.

Not all roles require physical strength - different roles may well be appropriate (to acknowledge that men and women are different).

Octavia64 · 05/12/2025 12:25

If you draft both parents of small children you run into the problem of who will look after the children?

most draft situations have reserved occupations and being a single parent to small kids should probably be one of them, male or female.

silverplait · 05/12/2025 12:25

Nobody should be forced to fight in a war they don’t want to be part of.
You should have the right to keep yourself safe from harm.

Muffsies · 05/12/2025 12:25

BashfulClam · 05/12/2025 11:58

I think people forget during wars that even though women are not on the front lines they are often the only people keeping the wheels turning. Childcare, teaching, production, farming, medicine, mechanics, fire fighting, aircraft detection and gunning.

This is very true, however I think the responsibilities should now be equal-opportunity. If one parent (male or female) choses conscription, the other is exempted and stays to care for family and 'home guard' duties.

There are many same sex couples bringing up families now, you can't conscript both parents just bc they're male, or neither bc they're female.

KittyFinlay · 05/12/2025 12:26

No-one should ever be drafted into the military. Gender is irrelevant.

Aslanwasright · 05/12/2025 12:27

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/12/2025 11:50

So your “feminism” is moveable?

I wouldn’t call myself a feminist. Completely believe in equality so yes, if young men are conscripted, young women should be, too (if both meet minimum physical and academic requirements).

If a person is a liberation feminist there is nothing movable about it at all. Equality is not women fighting men's wars.

schoolfriend · 05/12/2025 12:24

Yes, I know. My grandmother was conscripted in WW2 in an auxilliary role. I don't believe in conscription but that could be a compromise. I don't think any women should be conscripted into a situation which is intrinsically unsafe because of her sex.

Ygfrhj · 05/12/2025 12:27

I've heard the argument that women already endanger themselves in support of wider society by bearing children.

Either way I wouldn't want my daughters enlisted with a load of male soldiers, too many women in the military are assaulted by their own colleagues. Perhaps she could sit in a bunker operating drones with an all female unit.
