FiL crawling round on work video call

RuralStyleless · 04/12/2025 21:30

drunk leonardo dicaprio GIF

Am I being over-sensitive here?
I was on a video call this morning when my 73yo FIL came to get some things from the room. I realised, muted, said I was on a call and assumed he would wait until I said I was free. A minute later, I realise he has come inside and is crawling around trying not to be seen (he absolutely would have been seen). It was an external call, so not even colleagues I could laugh it off with). I'm absolutely livid.

For context, my study / home office is used as our guest room. This is not normally an issue. I had also warned him I was starting work and had to be on video calls 30 minutes earlier.

YABU - he is old, doesn't get tech, and no one said anything
YANBU - what sort of idiot does that?

Sorry but that’s such a miserable response to a lovely warm reply.

It was meant as a genuine thank you. I hearted the original.

Thanks. Perfect, useful response

What are you looking for here, exactly? 72% if people think YANBU. You’re ignoring them, arguing with the minority who think YABU and getting cross with the people who think it’s funny.

What response would you actually find ‘useful’, pray tell?

Horses7 · 04/12/2025 23:23

I understand your anger and frustration but I’m afraid it gave me a good giggle!

THisbackwithavengeance · 04/12/2025 23:24

Hilarious. Would’ve given your callers a good laugh watching an elderly man crawl around trying not to be seen

Pollqueen · 04/12/2025 23:24

I think this is one of those things you will hopefully, in time, look back and laugh at. I'm sure no one you were on the call with was horrified, shocked or offended and your FIL does sound quite endearing

I haven't looked at the poll actually. Am also just engaging un a thread I started. Seems my innocent replies are being taken a bit wrong sometimes... but I'll leave it now.

Absolutely hilarious, genius. 😂 However I understand that it wouldn't have been funny for you ATT

InlandTaipan · 04/12/2025 23:27

Amazed people think that our entire lives should be rearranged for my hubby's dad

He's a guest in your house and your husband's father. Presumably he was invited to stay with you? So yes, some rearrangement would be expected.

WearyAuldWumman · 04/12/2025 23:36

This won't be a consolation, but it could have been much worse.

During lockdown, I attended Zoom services online. One of the churches had to boot someone out of the room because - whilst someone was participating in the service, their SO was crawling 'under the camera' but in a state of partial undress.

A commando is a type of soldier. A commando crawl or army crawl is when you lie on your stomach and pull yourself forward using your arms, dragging your legs behind or sometimes using your toes to help propel yourself forward.

I know. I was being deliberately obtuse as light relief from the clamour of politicians on Question Time arguing about immigration.

I’m sorry this whole thread/image of OPs FIL crawling around on the floor has made howl, and this just sent me over the edge for some reason 😂😂 it’s such a genuine, earnest reply to assure the poster that FIL was not in fact naked 😂 I’m sorry OP - I know it must have been stressful for you but I really really needed this thread after a horrendous week at work so genuinely thankyou!

I think OP had a minor frustration which she (from the context clue of the GIF) does see as quite funny so thought she would share. Five years ago on Mumsnet this would have been met with humour and gentle sympathy but nowadays OP is a terrible host, is ignoring any replies which have completely misread the tone of her post don't agree with her, and is an all round terrible person who should be hounded off the internet until she apologises for not having a luxury guest house. The vibes on Mumsnet continue to decline.

OP posted in AIBU, described herself as "absolutely livid" and asked if she was being overly sensitive.

Ignoring your dramatics about "she's an all around terrible person who should be hounded off the internet", I don't think it's surprising that people didn't treat this as a poster just wanting to tell a humorous story so we could all chuckle sympathetically. People answered the questions she asked.

I was livid but can also see the funny side. The more lighthearted posts on here have helped me enjoy it more in hindsight.

One of our dogs commando crawls and in the past has crawled behind DH when he forgot to shut door tight. His colleagues thought it hilarious.

You were totally reasonable to be livid though, that is mortifying. With external people and it was completely avoidable. Whatever he needed could wait. I would have been really annoyed, ignore the 'holier than though' folks who never put a foot wrong or experience a normal array of human emotions....

StewkeyBlue · 05/12/2025 00:58

Its all pretty acceptable now to see life going on behind the video call.

Surely that depends on how confidential / sensitive the subject of the call.

Outside9 · 05/12/2025 01:00

Use a filter to blur or cover your background

Catsbooks345 · 05/12/2025 01:02

Oh I think this can be laughed off. It certainly gave me a chuckle. It doesn't reflect badly on you at all, unless you handled it terribly which I don't think was the case. Try to see the funny side OP.

TippityTappity2 · 05/12/2025 01:08

You’re definitely not being unreasonable but that made me laugh! Imagining an old man army crawling along the floor in the background of a Teams call 😂 Sorry!

As your guests have to use your office when they stay at your house, I’d explain very clearly that the room will be out of bounds at certain times and you can all prepare the night before? Making sure everyone has what they need from the room before you have a call.

In an ideal world, we’d all have a wonderfully equipped granny flat attached to our humble abodes but that’s not realistic for most. We make do with what we have so we can accommodate family. As long as they’re clear about the situation then it’s fine.

VoltaireMittyDream · 05/12/2025 01:25

RuralStyleless · 04/12/2025 21:56

Update: I am not an idiot. blur my background! But it unblurs when it sees 'people', so I assume he popped in and out. I also turn off self-view, so don't know quite what was shown.

I’m so sorry, but this makes it even funnier 🤣 The picture in my mind of his commando-crawling figure suddenly emerging from the hazy background like a sniper 😂😂

Also props to him for being able to get low and crawl at his age. Neither of my parents’ knees would have been up to that.

(I’d have been pretty peeved too.)

ChristmasCrumblings · 05/12/2025 01:26

I don't think it's a big deal. You are working from home. The people you were talking to can imagine that you might be sharing your home with others and they might even see them. It's not like he flashed them.

Imonmyway · 05/12/2025 01:34

Maybe a blurred background next time you hsve guests encase it happens again,
