To Think Non-Medically Required Circumcision Is Abuse?

BigFatBully · 02/12/2025 13:14

Circumcision of a child if not required for a medical reason is abuse. I don't believe a child can consent to mutilation and it should be for them to decide when they reach adulthood if they want such a procedure.

I don't understand how anyone could take a happy baby who is otherwise healthy and do this to them.

It's male genital mutilation (MGM).

Careful, your prejudice is showing.

She’s a fricking GP, she doesn’t need you to explain why FGM is bad to her.

And no, she hasn't been mutilated, have you?

It's not really prejudiced to assume a woman born in Somalia has suffered FGM - over 99% of women have. It's almost completely ubiquitous.

Why have you assumed she was born in Somalia? More prejudice.

If your friend opposed FGM I would not be telling her FGM is wrong. I would be agreeing with her that FGM is wrong.

Sorry I have completely lost your point - are you saying your Somalian friend is against FGM? I agree with her and wish her all the best in changing the culture there if that's what she's trying to do.

I don't understand why you're annoyed at me.

That is an example of an incorrect assumption not prejudice.

Also, why did you call her Somalian if she was not born there? Was she born in Britain? Seems rather racist not to describe her as British, if so.

JamieCannister · 03/12/2025 09:59

Back to the topic in hand.

Of course it is abuse. In much the same way that transgender ideology cannot possibly make sense in a world where trans-racialism is not a thing (who chooses which immutable characteristics can be changed and which can't), either cutting body parts off babies for no medical reason is OK or it is not. Given I have never heard a justification for cutting off babies fingers or toes or ears or noses or legs I simply cannot see why the genitalia is fair game. It makes zeros sense.

Why would you be bringing up FGM with her? In what capacity do you think you have the right to mansplain to her?

MC is legal.
FGM is not.

Oh, right. Sorry, I forgot that legal abuse is fine.

WTF!

I called her Somalian because that’s her heritage. Maybe look into why you and pp assumed (1) she must be mutilated (2) she wasn’t born in the UK (3) that she needs you both to explain to her why FGM is wrong.

When you post about Pakistani grooming gangs, how come you never prefix ‘British’ to it? Funny how people become British for your convenience, eh?

Hopefully you boycott the USA then where half the male population is circumcised. Guessing not, eh?

It’s for the law to determine what is abuse, not you.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/12/2025 10:08

Ages ago, but when a dd was in hospital having her tonsils out, I still remember a little boy of maybe 4, calling out over and over to say, ‘My willy hurts! My willy hurts!’
Presumably that was an entirely necessary procedure, as it sometimes is, but I felt so sorry for him.

We were talking about MGM, (and FGM).

You brought up your friend.

I do not bring up MGM or FGM with random people, but if the friend you dragged into it was next to me and the subject came up I would agree with her that FGM is disgusting and wrong and evil.

You did bring it up, you asked pp:

Would you tell the Somalian muslim community that FGM is wrong? If not why not?

Totally bizarre, they don’t need you to explain to them.

So FGM is not abuse when it happens in places where it is legal?

TicklishReader · 03/12/2025 10:12

Marble10 · 02/12/2025 22:03

A lot of men I’ve been with have been circumcised and they love the fact that they are/been proud. Although they have often recalled the trauma of recovery after having it done as a child (it seems to be common around 6)
DH is and thought it would be natural for our son to be. He was born a poorly baby and the last thing on
earth I would ever do is put him through unnecessary pain. Nearly split up over it, but it was something I felt so strongly about. My son was absolutely terrified at the thought of being cut. So no way ever was it happening.

Thank you for protecting your little boy. I wish more parents had your attitude.

Clearly the "Somalian community" DOES need it explaining as a group given how prevalent it is there. We were talking about the SOMALIAN community, we were not talking about your British friend with SOmalian heritage.

Which places? We’re talking about the UK. FGM is abuse anywhere.

You said "It’s for the law to determine what is abuse, not you."

By YOUR DEFINITION FGM is only abuse in places where it is illegal. Where it is not illegal it is not abuse. Those are your words not mine.

Unless of course you are saying the UK is superior to Somalia, so when we say it is abuse it is, but when they say it is not abuse they're wrong.

FGM is a crime in the UK and an abomination against women.
MC is not a crime in the UK.

I can’t make it any simpler for you.

True, these barbaric practices have poisoned the minds of otherwise intelligent adults for centuries.

Just want to ask you again though, if he thinks his penis is cleaner, how does he think you wash the folds around your vulva?

Why are you arguing with this poster. She was asked why her DH was glad he was circumcised , so she shared the reason as he sees it. It's his opinion about his own body, not something you need to argue with his wife about!!

Not really. Laws change.

it is not illegal to hit your child to discipline them in England. It is in Scotland and Wales. By your definition if you hit your kid in Wrexham, you’re an abuser, but if you hit them 20 minutes away Chester you’re fine, it’s not abuse.

causing unnecessary pain to a child is abuse wherever you are and whatever the law.
