To Think Non-Medically Required Circumcision Is Abuse?

BigFatBully · 02/12/2025 13:14

Circumcision of a child if not required for a medical reason is abuse. I don't believe a child can consent to mutilation and it should be for them to decide when they reach adulthood if they want such a procedure.

I don't understand how anyone could take a happy baby who is otherwise healthy and do this to them.

It's male genital mutilation (MGM).

This. My DP is circumcised, as are all the men in his family. None of the women have undergone FGM, which they find abhorrent

Male circumcision is pretty non negotiable in their culture

But done for the same reasons as FGM...not medical just cultural. The attitude that you don't remember so it's okay is no different to someone hitting a baby they won't remember one hit as an adult it's still wrong.
The idea it will look wrong if you don't is just a mad one like cutting lips, extending knock rings etc. just because it's done on boys doesn't mean we shouldn't stand up...boys count too. Obviously if you don't know what your missing as a man you won't appreciate that sex for example doesn't feel the same.

StupidHappyClocks · 02/12/2025 18:27

Ive never known a of circumcised man who felt this way. So YABU.

In lots of countries (certainly in Arab countries) boys are circumcised around the age of 6

Many do remember as there are celebrations, family and friends celebrate, music, food and lots of photos

Been to a number myself, no men were making statements that it was wrong

But as I have said before I feel it should be older but many men will absolutely remember

Oh I'm not pro at all - I think healthy body parts should be left very much alone! I guess it's "better" that the young men have a choice but then again given cultural pressure, it's not that much of a choice at all really.

Yes, I agree, if there is so much expectation placed on 18yos in a community, then it's not really a choice.

Ironic as 18 should be the age of reaching adulthood and making your own decisions.

I have no problem with your comment, apart from it's not a practice in my culture, but very much is in my DP's. None of my sons are circumcised (not DP's children). However, if we had had sons, I expect it would be an issue

Cultural change, if it is wanted, has to come from within and it's not up to me to tell their community it's wrong

Is MC just cultural though? A pp listed the benefits - reduced rates of STDs, less urinary tract infections, less cancer causing viruses, less penile cancer (when a new born is circumcised).

Why do you assume people many years ago didn't advocate for MC because of its benefits?

Even if those things are true-and there is plenty of evidence that they aren’t-that is still no reason for infant circumcision.

Even if penile cancer risk is reduced with newborn circumcision?

It's not common and an HPV vaccine and hygiene does the same.

It was more about the pps saying MC is cultural only. They wouldn't have had vaccines thousands of years ago but would have known the benefits of MC.

My husband had a medical circumcision in his 60s. He recovered well. But for a child for non medical reasons….. naah!

Would you tell the Somalian muslim community that FGM is wrong? If not why not?

FGM is illegal and an abomination against girls, everybody should be challenging it where they legitimately can, not just to make a point on a chat forum.

My friend is Somalian, if you mansplained to her that FGM is wrong, she would eat you alive.

Chiseltip · 02/12/2025 20:06

nomas · 02/12/2025 13:15

YABU. Male circumcision is entirely different to FGM.

You minimise the horrific nature of FGM when you compare it to male circumcision.

No you don't. Abuse is abuse.

Yes I would. And I would report any instances that I was aware of to the police.

Brefugee · 02/12/2025 20:15

You are not unreasonable to think that circumcision where not medically necessary is abuse.

You are MASSIVELY unreasonable to even think about comparing it to Female Genital Mutilation which is a scourge on womenkind.

And do you call parents who get their daughters' ears pierced 'barbaric'? I doubt it,

Indeed I do. There must be informed consent from the individual.

In the UK we no longer sentence convicts to hard labour, physical punishment or death. We consider those things are wrong and we're better than that. Yet here we are, cheerfully lopping live flesh from baby boys and calling the job a good'un.

That’s not what’s happening. This is the most hysterical thread I’ve read in a loooong time.

Yeah it’s so hysterical not wanting to cut off healthy parts of tiny babies bodies. Aren’t we weird

Blushingm · 02/12/2025 21:10

EscCtrl · 02/12/2025 13:38

Are there not advantages to circumcision, as listed on wikipedia?
"The procedure is associated with reduced rates of sexually transmitted infections[6] and urinary tract infections.[1][7][8] This includes reducing the incidence of cancer-causing forms of human papillomavirus (HPV) and reducing HIV transmission among heterosexual men in high-risk populations by up to 60%;[9][10] its prophylactic efficacy against HIV transmission in the developed world or among men who have sex with men is debated.[11][12][13] Neonatal circumcision decreases the risk of penile cancer.[14] "

Or are the editors of wikipedia biased? e.g. American doctors who make money out of performing the procedure?

That’s actually rubbish - there is no evidence to suggest a foreskin increases a man’s risk of hiv or hpv or any other sort of cancer.

Wikipedia is not a reliable source
