Would you be happy to receive a Christmas cookie box as a gift?

I’m planning on making Christmas cookie boxes for friends and family this year in place of plastic tat as gifts. I’m planning for them to include:

• homemade digestives (chocolate)
• chocolate salami (like a rocky road in a log)
• snickerdoodles
• lemon biscotti (nut free)
• triple chocolate peppermint cookies
• vanilla bean shortbread
• chocolate cookies
• stained glass window biscuits

would you be happy to receive these?

An alternative - which won't go off or get eaten by the dog if left under a tree: There are lots of recipes on line for cookie mixes in jars - You layer up the dry ingredients in a jar to look pretty and stick the instructions on a label...The recipient adds the butter/oil/egg/whatever and makes their own cookies once all the Christmas kerfuffle has died down.

That sounds even worse - a gift of a chore!

Fuckoffeasypeelers · 02/12/2025 08:05

Hmm I would be polite and thank you but not really a fan of sweet stuff.
Also gifts should be given with the recipient in mind and all this " I'm the family baker" is focusing on you not the recipient.
Personally would prefer cheese 🧀 or a book token .

DeafLeppard · 02/12/2025 08:06

Chocolate salami is a genuine Italian thing!

100%
Not everyone thinks this is ‘tasty’.

Holluschickie · 02/12/2025 08:08

I'd like cheese too. I'd like almost anything frankly. Please don't believe that your non-Christian friends will be offended by gifts. 😉

Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/12/2025 08:11

Just Googled it. iswym 🧐
"chocolate cookie slice"

You may want to consider that it won't do well for long out of the fridge. Maybe don't give that one. It will become a gooey mess.

It’s basically just a rocky road in a log (how unappealing does that sound 🤢)

It’s a lovely idea and most people would be absolutely delighted. But Mumsnet is not a good place to ask this. I haven’t read the thread, but here’s my bingo card.
I only eat 1 biscuit a year-they’ll go to waste.
Home made? If you can’t afford a proper present don’t give anything.Fortnum and Masons sell delicious tins of biscuits.
I only eat food made in a sterile lab-anything else is too dangerous-they’d go straight in the bin.
It’s a bit show-offy, isn’t it? Not everyone has the time or the skill to do something like this.
Are you suggesting I’m fat?

I’m just bumping up my bingo card from earlier. I think I’ve got a full house!

Cornflakegirl7 · 02/12/2025 08:17

I'd appreciate them but I wouldn't eat them, they'd just get doled out to visitors or taken to my local pub. I live alone and don't like biscuits. Surely it'd depend on the person.

This is so on the nose! 😁 Even without reading the thread!
But also: I won't be answering the door to receive said biscuits.
How very narcissistic of you.
Why not gift a box of ingredients and make them bake it themselves? 😮

Lookingforthejoy · 02/12/2025 08:22

24Dogcuddler · 01/12/2025 21:57

Sounds like a lovely selection and a thoughtful gift. My worry would be that it’s a lot of effort, they won’t keep long at all and unlikely to be eaten over the actual festive period due to the amount of other sweet items around.

I agree. In our house they would end up being wasted.

Thirdtimeunlucky2025 · 02/12/2025 08:23

For years I have given certain family members food and drink presents knowing they would be consumed the packaging thrown and no endless tat left in cupboards and drawers.

I think it’s a great idea personally one that I know I would love but my sister-in-law who is actively Slimming and has no willpower would hate

So maybe choose the recipients wisely

I love yours! The use of “said” is excellent work.

After days and days of cooking for family/friends/random visitors I can assure you a jar of ingredients would be tipped into the bin!
Nice for someone who has had a quiet Christmas/been hosted maybe but you would really need to know your audience for that as a gift I think!

I only know one friend who would make them, she's very rules orientated and wouldn't realise she could just chuck it.

Can we add:

  • "My kids wouldn't touch these - they prefer things like carrot sticks and hummus"
  • "The smell of biscuits gives me migraines/asthma attacks"
  • "Too many sensory issues in this house for crunchy biscuits"
  • Someone making a vague accusation of 'virtue-signalling'
  • "Why isn't your DH doing his share of biscuit making? Too busy with hobbies, being a Disney dad and conducting an emotional affair with a woman at work, no doubt. Raise your bar, OP. Time to get your ducks in a row."

I'd definitely rather have some actual biscuits than a jar containing a scoop of flour and sugar and a pinch of obligation.

WheresBillGrundyNow · 02/12/2025 16:25

My sil bakes Christmas cookies and has them out on plates when we visit. She asks if we want to take some home too. I prefer this to being given a box like you describe. I eat more biscuits than anyone else I know and even I would struggle not to end up throwing most of those out.

That’s even worse, you’re basically just giving people a job to do 🙈
