The elves have arrived, they’ve brought advent calendars, fluffy socks, Christmas teddies, Christmas pyjamas and Christmas bedding and a Christmas book to read :) not all new things I’ve got lots from charity shops so old but new to us :) I’m so excited I love seeing my kids happy faces - tell me about your Christmas traditions!

I can't wait, I keep side eyeing our advent calendars and wondering if anyone would notice if I opened mine early. I've always been a massive kid about Christmas!

The tradition I'm most looking forward to is Christmas eve, curling up on the sofa and watching Muppets Christmas Carol far too late in the evening so we're dozing off by the end. It's such a wonderfully cosy, comforting thing!

Millytante · 01/12/2025 02:08

Since when?
And where did these bloody elves come from, while we’re at it?!
One Winter not so long ago they just appeared everywhere, though the previous year they'd have been utterly unknown, and everyone has been behaving ever since as though they had always been a part of Christmas, like the Three Kings/Wise Men, Quality Street, or the holly and the ivy!

It’s December, this is true, but it isn’t Christmas quite yet. Control yourselves (and your confounded elves)! 🤣🙏🏻🎄🦌

This. I'm plotting elficide as I write this. ☠️

Sorry op as a retail worker I say I am not excited for at least another ten days- there’s too much Christmas at the mo- I’ve heard silent night six times today in work- too much!!

Gingernaut · 01/12/2025 02:27

It's Advent until Christmas Day

THEN it's Christmas until 6th January

Unless you're Orthodox, when it's Christmas on 7th January after a 40 day fast and other religious observances

Spacesthatsing · 01/12/2025 03:06

Not the biggest fan of Christmas but if you love it OP go for your life! I love that people are so enthusiastic, it always raises a smile.

HeyThereDelila · 01/12/2025 03:11

Advent has started.

Christmas starts on 25th of December.

ChewbaccasMrs · 01/12/2025 03:48

I'm looking forward to our DC opening their advent calendars tomorrow and then I'm looking forward to when our DD18 gets home from college(she is autistic)and sees her bedroom decorated for Christmas with the new decorations, new Christmas bedding and cushion I'm pretty sure she'll squeal when she sees it all.😍

I can't wait to list and separate all of the stocking fillers I've bought(I have 8 stockings to do)then I'll feel like I've got a big part of Christmas sorted.

I'm also looking forward to prepping a few things for Christmas dinner and getting those into the freezer.

they came from a children’s book that was published in 2016 I believe.

I don’t even celebrate Christmas but I’m not averse to new traditions. Crackers and Christmas trees are only a Victorian development - things evolve and everything has to start somewhere.

sashh · 01/12/2025 04:56

OP I'd make a bet that you are also one of the people who takes the tree and decorations down in the middle of Xmas.

Oh bore off. Xmas stated last week in my house. People are different, deal with it!

Would you say that to someone about Eid? Diwali? Hanukah?

For a Christian Advent is important.

AhBiscuits · 01/12/2025 06:32

I've lost my enthusiasm a bit as the kids were so excited about the bloody elves arriving that they've been awake half the night 😅 The elves are their favourite bit of the festive season, they get more excited about their antics than the prospect of presents, which i find quite surprising.

Sartre · 01/12/2025 06:32

Knew a pleasant thread would get detailed on AIBU! It’s generally negativity or nothing on here OP but of course you’re NBU. I love Christmas too. Our elves have also arrived and DC were thrilled to see their gifts and open their advent calendars, although youngest DS wants everyone’s!

SillyCecilia · 01/12/2025 06:32

Christmas in our starts on the 23rd when we decorate a tiny little bit. What are Christmas pyjamas and Christmas bedding all about?

The poster stated as if it’s the same for everyone. It’s not. Xmas starts when people choose and they do it differently. Funnily enough my Muslim and Hindu friends and the few Jewish people I know (and Christians) don’t try to tell me when I can start celebrating. But yes, if anyone tried to tell me that it’s not Xmas for me and my family, they can indeed bore off.

ThestoriesIcouldtellyou · 01/12/2025 06:36

I do love the first Sunday of advent though. I feel the break from the old year knowing that it's the run up to Christmas and I try to start being calmer, which admittedly is hard with Christmas present shopping, but mentally I try to slow down and enjoy the "wait".

You put the bedding on your bed like any other bedding, lie in bed and go to sleep, but for some, it brings joy. Same with pyjamas, put on body like regular pyjamas and continue what you’re doing. Some people find them fun. And no, they don’t usually get thrown away, they used many times, like other bedding and pyjamas. 😉

whatisforteamum · 01/12/2025 06:46

Tryingatleast I feel your pain.🤣
As a chef Christmas starts end of November with Christmas bookings.
Back to back bookings of turkey dinners is enough to suck the Christmas spirit out of anyone.60 hr weeks of relentless hard work.
I've come on here to get some Christmas spirit now I get the week off.☺️
I fear it maybe too late.!

Justlostmybagel · 01/12/2025 06:47

Christmas starts on the 25th December, you might not like it, you might pretend it is Xmas now, but it isn't.

Enjoy your pretend Xmas, but you can't change the date of the actual holiday.

When people use Christmas in this context, they are just talking about the festive season.

When people use Christmas in this context, they are just talking about the festive season.

Which they usually then mistakenly considered finished on Boxing Day.

Advent started yesterday. Christmas starts in a few more weeks. The only thing that started today was December.
