This is madness. Can the last taxpayer in the UK please close the door behind them.

Do people not realise disability benefits are not means tested?

Pip isn’t, universal credit is, prob some would choose pip to be means tested😡

Benjithedog · 02/12/2025 17:43

It’s called taking responsibility for yourselves rather than expect the taxpayer to pay for everything

I never even had a job until I was 21 I’m very ashamed of it and understand why people are resentful of their tax money being spent on other people I became pregnant at 15 gave birth when I was 16 yes it’s my fault but I was young, stupid and romantic didn’t even know about benefits when I got pregnant but luckily there were benefits or idk what I would have done. I had a thread the other day and maybe someone will recognise my name and tell me they’re sick of hearing about this, but I’m just saying most people on benefits with children didn’t just have their children for benefits

It is not what I want. The housing situation outlook will be very bleak for some. Hence people need to cover all bases now why they can. Wise decisions, insurance policies, family support network etc.

A lot of people would fall outside that safety net. I'm not claiming to have the answer to that, just saying a lot of people would do their level best and still not be able to manage.

dreamiesformolly · 02/12/2025 17:55

Sorry to hear that happened to you. 💐 Ignore the crazy, you can't reason with it.

Thank you. The redundancy worked out for the best in the end. Even though I loved my job at the time, the job I have now has a lot of training opportunities and chances to step into other roles for short periods to gain experience.

Finding it took longer than I would have liked because the job market is terrible atm. If I didn't kill every plant I have ever looked at, setting up a weed farm might have been a tempting option, but luckily, there was a safety net available for me to cover the gap between jobs.

That is a good definition of the piss takers. As long as the dole is flowing in they don't give a fuck about the country,.

Is that aimed at me?

Bumblebee72 · 02/12/2025 18:01

dreamiesformolly · 02/12/2025 17:57

'Get' another proper job. Because there are plenty to go round, anyone can just 'get' one. Like popping down the corner shop for a pint of milk. Why don't you cop on and educate yourself? Oh, I forgot, you don't have to, because 'lived experience'.

If you have the resources to set up a weed farm as you propose, which would be pretty capital intensive and I doubt you could get a bank loan to fund, you both don't need benefits and you would have the skills to set up a business trading on a legal trade.

dreamiesformolly · 02/12/2025 18:01

Benjithedog · 02/12/2025 17:55

No it’s called taking responsibility and we all have to do it to some degree. And if people didn’t care no taxes would be paid to help those in need.

Would you pay taxes if you didn't have to? I mean you personally.

dreamiesformolly · 02/12/2025 18:03

Benjithedog · 02/12/2025 17:56

On the contrary there is no reasoning with you and if you’ve read my reply it clearly states that if those things did happen this is when benefits system would kick in which is what it issupposed to do . 🤷‍♀️

Edited

Why are you assuming pp was speaking theoretically? I mean, she might have been and I might have misunderstood, but I find it interesting you made an assumption that allowed you to continue the snark.

I know nothing about you? You might be one of the mumsnetters who earns millions or a nurse or a whole range of different roles.

Its sad that you see a world where people aren't dependent on the state to eat or for a roof over their head as a fairy tale.

I don't. It's your nonsense 'thoughts and lived experience' that are the fairy tale.

Glad you got there in the end. It is terrible, and the amount of ignorance and naivety on here beggars belief.

HelpMySocksAreTouchingMe · 02/12/2025 18:06

If a family had three children and were working bringing home a salary of 28k they would also be entitled to universal credit. So they wouldn’t be worse off than the family on benefits.

I know this because I had three children before the cap cut off (so received UC for all three) I received UC when my salary was 35k

It kept me in work, allowed me to progress in my career and I now earn enough to not need any benefits so I don’t feel ashamed or guilty about the help I received.

I wasn't talking theoretically, FWIW. I was made redundant 6/7 months ago. I was unemployed for 7/8ish weeks because, despite applying for literally everything, I couldn't find anything.

DH died suddenly of SUDEP 3 years ago, so my kids don't have a father in the picture to pick up the financial slack when things are tight.

All of which is wholly irrelevant to what I just said.

We’ve all been young and stupid so I wouldn’t worry about that. I think a lot of people don’t have kids to get benefits but there are always some. But actually well done you in getting a job. You should be very proud of yourself and I hope things are going well for you and your children.

Why are we paying rent for people but not mortgages. Honest question.

I agree, but in a way we are……the landlords mortgage will be paid. Make that make sense!

Just checking. Because, you see, a lot of us who actually understand poverty and how the job market works, and that the challenges involved in helping those in need to improve their lives are not as straightforward as some of the batshit being peddled on this thread, actually are working people, we're not your mythical X-boxers. Just so we're clear.

Great. Next time I get made redundant, or my husband dies, I will set up a weed farm. I assume you're okay with me marketing my product to your kids? After all, I would be taking personal responsibility and not asking your taxes to help me.

I used to work in a sex chatline office. I assume women who think the same way as some do on this thread were ok with their husbands calling me

You shouldn’t feel guilty or ashamed either because the welfare system did its job and kept you in work allowing you to progress further in your career . That is what it should do

Is it true when the ladies are on the phone, they are knitting or doing crossword or sudoku?
