Do you deccorate the outside of your house a lot for Xmas?

How far do you go with decorating the outside of your house? More & more houses are becoming so lit ip that ours looks drab in comparison. We dont fancy getting on ladders to hang lights around the house. The drive is covered in cars so seems pointless decorating the drive. Then there's storing all the kit for 11 months of the year. Any ideaa to make the outside less drab in comparison?

Absolutely not

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 30/11/2025 18:03

We do a few inflatables, lit up candy canes, lights around the windows and twinkly lights in the bush in the garden. It all gets stored in the garage. The more lights the merrier. I leave the bush lights in all year too.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 30/11/2025 18:05

We used to put lights in on our front garden which I loved but had our windows redone and now can't get the cable through. Seems a bit extra to get an outdoor plug put in just for Christmas.

AyrshireTryer · 30/11/2025 18:07

No,

There is a house down the road that goes all out for charity. I'm not going to compete with that.

logsahc · 30/11/2025 18:08

Yes we do, DH loves doing it, if it was just me I wouldn’t! He hated Christmas when we first got together due to childhood issues, but he’s really re-written the narrative with us and I love how much he gets excited for it now. He drilled in permanent clips so it doesn’t take longer than about an hour to get them all put up now, we have them at the front of the house and garage and a few others things like porch trees etc.

TheThingsYouDoForLurve · 30/11/2025 18:08

One tree in the house, a lit garland across the fire mantle and that’s your lot! Outside lights only really look good when done by a set / lighting designer for a Hollywood movie (and should only ever be warm white and non-flashing)

JudgeBread · 30/11/2025 18:08

Not at all, can't be arsed.

I genuinely love Christmas but I prefer to just decorate inside.

snoopythebeagle · 30/11/2025 18:09

Nope. Who can be arsed with all that 😂

logsahc · 30/11/2025 18:10

And just to add almost every house on our estate does, it looks beautiful, we tend to go for a walk on Xmas Eve to see them all.

ChristmasFluff · 30/11/2025 18:10

I do lights on my hedges and bushes, but that's all. I'm the most decorated in my street though!

unsync · 30/11/2025 18:10

I barely decorate the inside, so no way am I doing the outside. I am partial to a twinkly light though, so that compensates for my lack of enthusiasm with the decorating indoors.

MargaretThursday · 30/11/2025 18:11

I put battery lights in the apple trees but nothing else.

Chasingsquirrels · 30/11/2025 18:12

I've got a string of cluster lights on the front of the garage and down the drive side.
They stay up year round and generally get switched on from about October to March, on a timer from 30 mins before sunset to 11.30pm.

I used to have similar on the porch but didn't replace when they broke a few years ago.

Neighbours across the road go the whole hog, up the weekend before December (so they have just done it).

CoralPombear · 30/11/2025 18:12

I have some starry lights for my windows but don’t go mad. Most of my neighbours are elderly so will hang a nice wreath or similar but we’re not big on decs.

dontmalbeconme · 30/11/2025 18:13

We have a set of warm white festoon lights and small red cherry lights hung together round our front veranda railings. Tbh, the red is for DHs benefit, I'd prefer small bright white stars mixed in with the warm white festoons (we used to have this, and they looked stunning, despite MN's hatred of mixing warm white and bright white), but there's always room for compromise in a happy marriage!

singmoon · 30/11/2025 18:13

I put a wreath on the door and some lights on the railings.

You can get out door battery operated lights with a timer

Hellodarknessyouoldprick · 30/11/2025 18:15

No, it would get nicked, or just broken and chucked into the road.

i had a wreath the first Christmas we lived here and it was gone by the afternoon.

Sunshineo · 30/11/2025 18:18

We have fairy lights in the trees along the drive all year.
No dc at home, no one likely to drive past us and we wouldn’t see from indoors so no.

Itiswhysofew · 30/11/2025 18:21

I have a front door wreath with lights. A single candle, (battery), in all downstairs windows and some lights on the gates. Mine aren't up yet though.

Someone in the village has got loads of colourful lights in their front garden. It looks wonderful. I really like seeing highly decorated houses, but I couldn't manage that myself.

SusanChurchouse · 30/11/2025 18:21

No, can’t be arsed and don’t really want to spend money on buying or running them

Just a homemade wreath

dontforgetme · 30/11/2025 18:22

We have a wreath on the door, lights around our arched doorway, 3 reindeers and some candy canes. I love it, really cheers me up coming home from work to the lights outside.

TheChosenTwo · 30/11/2025 18:32

It was dc2’s wistful request one year to have outside lights 😂
The following year dh ordered some and put them up before they got home from school and omg her face when she got to our house was one of those things I’ll never forget, she was so so happy! Such a simple thing.

We just have a string along the top and side of the house and then strings in the front windows, then some in the garden along the front of the workshop and down the side of the fences. They come on from 4-11 I think and are just quietly pretty.
No inflatables or reindeer etc, our drive just has space for cars. I wouldn’t want them if we had room but I’d have 2 of those giant nutcrackers either side of the front door - the kids hate them but I bloody love a bit of Christmas tackiness 😂

DemonsandMosquitoes · 30/11/2025 18:51

One set of lights around the front of the house along the garage, porch and windows. We’ve had them years. White and twinkly. We’re semi rural so not competing with anyone, but they’re a tradition since the DC were little and I love coming home to them in the dark for a couple of weeks a year.
