Do you deccorate the outside of your house a lot for Xmas?

How far do you go with decorating the outside of your house? More & more houses are becoming so lit ip that ours looks drab in comparison. We dont fancy getting on ladders to hang lights around the house. The drive is covered in cars so seems pointless decorating the drive. Then there's storing all the kit for 11 months of the year. Any ideaa to make the outside less drab in comparison?

Yes. They are all warm white. Some on hedge and up stair rails. Some rattan deer with lights. Some under roof edge ( these are hidden by edge so stay up all year).
They are all Led so running 4-10pm roughly for a month doesn’t increase the electric bill at all really

They have been bought gradually over the years so not a one off large expense

When we put our decs up( mid December) we usually put some warm white lights on our front garden wall. Always have a wreath on front door too but it doesn’t light up.

PeonyPatch · 30/11/2025 19:01

Yes, we do. Those that don’t are miserable imo.
We have a wreath, two light up reindeer, light up mushrooms, stars in the window, light up dachshund and lights around our porch hanging over the door. It looks tasteful and especially nice in the evening as our road is so dark :-) All warm white too.

Inflatables are the worst thing. There is an inflatable dinosaur in the next road. What is Christmassy about that?

Oioiqueen · 30/11/2025 19:19

We never used to however our kids love walking around the village to see what everyone else has done so we hope others get the same joy. Last year we just had a few solar in the bushes. However I promised the kids we would get power put in out the front and get some for this year. Now we have canes along the edge of the driveway and lights on the ground floor eves. It's not a lot but as none of the neighbours around us do anything it just looks simple and nice.

Sunloungerhogger · 30/11/2025 19:29

We have warm white fairy lights round the porch, and will put a wreath on the front door. If we had a bush / small tree out the front I would put warm white fairy lights in that too, as I think it looks really pretty - but I’m a stickler for it only being warm white small fairy lights, nothing coloured and or flashing but everyone’s tastes are different.

Sunloungerhogger · 30/11/2025 19:30

I do also love walking round the village and seeing everyone’s lights, I think it looks lovely.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 30/11/2025 19:54

No. To be fair, if anyone on our lane did, it would look like Blackpool Illuminations... because we don't have any street lights, never mind Christmas lights! Some of the neighbours decorate indoors, but never outside. I quite like the icicle-style lights, but that would require too much motivation to put up (and I'm not a fan of heights!).

Hedjwitch · 30/11/2025 19:55

No. Not at all

SwirlyShirly · 30/11/2025 19:58

We have a few lights up and a snowflake projector. They’re on timers so it’s cheerful to come home to you in the evening. We also have a couple of little potted Xmas trees with lights on either side of the porch. Oh and I forgot a pearlescent lit up reindeer- he’s new.

Miserable or - don't have outside power, the ability to physically put lights on a house, don't have a ladder? But yes everyone's just a grinch.

Well, taste is a matter of opinion - I personally don't think what you've described is remotely tasteful 😉

Cynic17 · 30/11/2025 20:07

Absolutely no way. But I don't decorate the inside of the house either 🤣

Lindy2 · 30/11/2025 20:13

We usually have some nice white star lights along the front of the house and a big star in the lounge window.

However, I've been out all day today whilst DH got the decorations out of the loft and we now also appear to have several sets of multicoloured lights along the front and over the hedges. It's a bit more than I'd personally choose but he seems delighted with his efforts today so the colourful lights are here to stay.

SpottyAardvark · 30/11/2025 20:20

No. We barely bother decorating the inside, never mind the outside.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 30/11/2025 20:22

No, we live on a private street with no public right of way/access so no one would see them and the kids are teens now so dont really care.

Gingercar · 30/11/2025 20:22

We have our Christmas tree outside (it’s a live one we’ve had a few years in a tub). It’s outside a living room window that goes down to floor level. I don’t like the clutter of a tree inside.. Sometimes we have other lights on a garland around the front door.

Fundays12 · 30/11/2025 20:30

Yes i have a wreath on my front and back door, beautiful traditional Christmas lanterns and lights.

ShesTheAlbatross · 30/11/2025 20:32

Can’t be arsed. But I do love looking at the houses that do decorate.

I do a wreath on the door, and that’s it.

logsahc · 30/11/2025 20:35

We have loads of handymen around here now that run services this time of year to put lights up.

ticktockitsNCtime · 30/11/2025 20:50

I make a fresh wreath for the front door and we put our tree in the window so it’s visible from the outside. That’s all for us. I’m not really a fan of outside lights or decorations.

We used to put lights in on our front garden which I loved but had our windows redone and now can't get the cable through. Seems a bit extra to get an outdoor plug put in just for Christmas.

I have a waterproof out door spike with three or four sockets. In answer to the original question I put some white lights on a small tree and that's it. I find that the cable from them is so thin that it can be trapped in the window frame with no problem.

StatisticallyChallenged · 30/11/2025 20:55

We're fairly full on

Twinkly colour changing lights on trees in front garden
Just installed govee permanent outdoor lights
Reindeer family
Twinkly pole tree thing in back
Curtain light on bifolds and stairs
Two xmas trees
5 wreaths
Several big garlands

We love a fairy light

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 30/11/2025 21:00

We put icicle lights around the bay window and the porch, a big light-up star in the middle of the bay window, light up reindeer on the lawn and a lit up wreath on the door. Will probably put some lights in the tree too.

I wouldn't say we go all out at all, it doesn't take long and there's not much, really. The reindeer is quite small and folds down. It all just goes up in the loft with the rest of the Christmas decs.

Other houses do more, some do less. I'm happy with what we do.

SparklyBlueDress · 30/11/2025 21:02

I have some reindeer, a twinkly tree and some lights around the windows. Very tasteful IMO but I love seeing it and other decorated houses
