Dog smell

I’m visiting a friend this weekend and she has three large dogs. The house stinks of dog, even upstairs where they’re supposedly not allowed to go. AIBU to just hate it? We’ve never been a dog family so I’m not used to it, but this morning the smell is turning my stomach.

Now they’re trying to steal our breakfast as we eat. I hate it!

You're actively starting a thread bitching about your friend's home while you're still there?

What a wonderful friend you are.

KimberleyClark · 30/11/2025 10:01

Can you stay in a Premier Inn or something while visiting her?

CandyCaneKisses · 30/11/2025 10:02

Repulsive! I couldn’t stand it either.

FiveShelties · 30/11/2025 10:04

Have you told your friend?

cheerfulaf · 30/11/2025 10:04

Don’t stay there then?? It’s the dog’s home, you’re a guest and not a nice one by the sounds of it

PegDope · 30/11/2025 10:04

You’re brave to face the wrath of the dog owners on here whose perfect pooches never behave in any other way than angelical.

Dogs stink, dog owners stink of dog, dogs homes stink of dog and no scented candle or bottle of febreeze can hide it.

I’d stay at a hotel nearby OP and claim sudden onset of allergies.

I’ve never stayed here before and I won’t again!

I agree with PP, invent some allergies and move to a local hotel.

I’ve never really noticed it before, I had family with dogs growing up but they also had birds and put the smell down to the birds. But there really is a smell!

Ugh, i just couldn't. Cat smell is bad enough, we used to have cats when i was a kid and they make everything smell kind of musty. Dogs smell of sweat and bum hole, you just can't ignore it.

Tagyoureit · 30/11/2025 10:06

Didn't you know about the dogs before agreeing to stay?

If so, then what did you expect? Dogs smell, dog owners are oblivious to it.

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 30/11/2025 10:06

Well, don’t stay there again I guess? I don’t think anyone likes the smell of dog but those with dogs living in their home notice it far less. To be fair there’s variation in that too, three large dogs will be stinkier than one small one, generally.
Overall I think it’s just weird and rude to start a thread purely to bitch about your friend’s home when they’re hosting you. It’s not like you need advice or have a genuine question.

Dogs don’t sweat.

Mumblechum0 · 30/11/2025 10:08

They do stink, especially bigger ones I’ve noticed, and it absolutely is off putting when you’re eating.

that’s why the fashion for having dogs in food pubs and cafes bugs me, it’s very hard to get away from them these days.

i wouldn’t say anything but would be desperate to get out of there, maybe get outside for the day?

We’re going out and then I’m heading home, thankfully

Dogs don’t sweat.

Then whatever oils or pheromones their skin produces smells like rank sweat, i guess.

Would that be the ex Prince Andrew breed?

stomachamelon · 30/11/2025 10:18

@Muffsiesi have a pug. She defo doesn’t smell of sweat and bum holes. But then she is regularly groomed :)

Some dogs seem to smell more than others depending on size, coat length, etc. I've certainly noticed that some dogs with floppy ears have an awful vomit-like whiff.

100jamjars · 30/11/2025 10:31

I have the same problem with a relative's house. It makes me physically gag and I've had to stop going in the house. I'm running out of excuses but I really cannot go in there and whilst my husband also finds it unpleasant he doesn't get the gag reflex and puts up with it. It's his relative. Maybe I'll just have to tell them but I doubt it will be received well.

SterlingsGold · 30/11/2025 10:35

I’m with you on this OP, I love dogs but they stink and I don’t want my own one due to this.

MoonWoman69 · 30/11/2025 10:38

I have two cats, they both smell like they've been hung on the washing line. No cat I've ever had has smelt, that comes down to the owners disgustingly bad ownership hygiene, as in dirty dishes and litter trays, not the animals themselves. Unless they have health issues obviously.
I think its rude starting a thread about this while you're there OP. Bad taste.
And other than posting to froth up dog hatred, I don't see the point of your post, you've stayed there for the first time, it's not for you, don't stay again, simple really. 🤷🏼‍♀️
