Dog smell

EasiestWayOut · 30/11/2025 09:25

I’m visiting a friend this weekend and she has three large dogs. The house stinks of dog, even upstairs where they’re supposedly not allowed to go. AIBU to just hate it? We’ve never been a dog family so I’m not used to it, but this morning the smell is turning my stomach.

Do you all think houses without dogs smell neutral?

They don’t smell of dog! Ours smells like whatever’s been baked that weekend. Certainly nicer

You might think that. Probably nose blind.

Titasaducksarse · 30/11/2025 13:45

I have a dog and hate the smell of dog! Thankfully as ours is non shedding this helps and OH works away x 4 days so he comes home with fresh nostrils each week. I'd hate to think my home stinks

Checknotmymate · 30/11/2025 13:51

I have a dog and also hate the dog smell. No carpet downstairs, floors get hoovered and mopped daily, dog isn't allowed upstairs and all dog beds washed weekly keeps it under control.

No, but they don't smell of dog.

Dogs stink and they make the houses they live in stink. It doesn't matter how clean they are or how houseproud their owners are, their houses always stink. Dog owners don't notice the stink, because they live with it all the time.

I don't know how you managed to stay there OP. At the first whiff I would would have remembered a compelling reason why I needed to be somewhere else immediately.

As for the dogs begging for food while I was trying to eat breakfast, if the owners didn't get the wretched beasts off me straight away, I would have been straight out of the front door. What a disgraceful way to treat guests.

Onegingerhead · 30/11/2025 14:06

I would boot a friend who dares to tell me they my dog smells of butt holes. Partially for the reason I would be slightly suspicious of my “friend” hobbies 😳
On a serious note. If you don’t like dogs, don’t go to the places they live?

Shitmonger · 30/11/2025 14:06

Any house where dogs are allowed on the furniture will smell like dog. Also if the house is damp it will amplify the smells.

I’ve been in plenty of households where the dogs are not allowed on furniture and there’s no dog smell as long as they are also bathed regularly. They do produce oils from their skin that are stinky and some breeds produce more than others (hounds and labs, for example). When they’re allowed on furniture their body oil will eventually cause it to stink. Regular bathing and washing of dog bedding keeps the oil/smell down.

Nearly50omg · 30/11/2025 14:17

A decent dog owner and house proud person you don’t smell their dogs in the house! My friend has a cat and a dog and you can’t smell anything other than the whiff of freshly cleaned washing or something from washing hanging up 🤷‍♀️ as long as you clean daily properly and wipe down all surfaces and don’t let the dogs misbehave - eating off people’s plates etc - and lie on sofas, clean the dogs regularly etc there’s really no reason their houses should smell!

Noshowlomo · 30/11/2025 11:29

Yup they really stink.
My cats smell like fabric softener but the litter tray does get rank so I buy a new one every 1 months as the ammonia smell sticks to the plastic. It’s rank, but all animals come with a smell I suppose. But yeah all dog houses do have a stink about them

You could try stainless steel, they don't hold onto smells like plastic

Muffsies · 30/11/2025 10:06

Ugh, i just couldn't. Cat smell is bad enough, we used to have cats when i was a kid and they make everything smell kind of musty. Dogs smell of sweat and bum hole, you just can't ignore it.

I dont find cats smell if you have the litterbox out the way and clean it regulary. Plus love sniffing my kitties warm furry head. Comforting.

People regularly tell us how nice it smells and we also have automatic air fresheners everywhere. So it’s pleasant!

I have to say it’s peak Mumsnet to say either dogs are wafting the flora and fauna of roses or are ‘ wretched beasts’. What an awful hyperbolic thing to say.

Some people chose to have animals. I am one of those people. My dog does malt and I know can beat out a pong at times- I know when her ears need looking at as they smell yeasty and sometimes her anal beads need tweaking and she can smell a bit fishy. But day to day I air my house and hoover it to mitigate. My boys are autistic and come in and out, so will and do say if they think it smells at all. We have wooden flooring and regularly wash blankets.

I also have a medical condition- hence name- that probably means I smell far worse than she does and she doesn’t seem to object.

I think if you are a guest in someone’s house then you suck it up or leave. My dog doesn’t beg but she will stare at you mournfully if you are chowing down and she isn’t but it’s easily ignored.

I understand that not everyone likes dogs but those people are welcome not to visit. Or we meet on neutral ground. I love her. She is part of my family :) pongs and all.

Ah the chemically smell of ‘air fresheners’. Now that is horrible.

I find it astonishing that anyone would have this attitude to hosting.

I invite people into my home because I enjoy their company, so I want to make them feel welcome comfortable (so they will want to visit again). It shouldn't be a test of how much stench and poor behaviour they can tolerate.

I would be mortified if someone wanted to leave because my home stank or because one of it's occupants was begging for food from their plate.

Also, with male dogs, depending on whether they’re intact or not.

Edited

I think that goes for cats, too.

I didn't used to mind pet smells too much when i was younger, but it really makes me gip now. I will stroke someone's cat or pat a dog, but i immediately wash my hands bc i can smell it on me.

briq · 30/11/2025 14:53

I love dogs but agree that they can make your home smell 'doggy'. Some breeds (and individuals) smell worse than others, though, and I've never had the misfortune to meet a dog that smelled of vomit, sweat, or 'bum hole'. Guess I've been lucky! They always smell like dogs, which is a distinctive smell all its own.

I've heard people say that you always know when a house has a cat in it from the smell, too, and I know from experience that hamster cages are difficult to keep fresh-smelling all the time, so I suppose if you have nearly any type of pet, smells are part of the deal.

Like a PP said, I'd rather have a house that smells like dogs than go without my much-loved pets, so guests will have to decide for themselves whether the smell bothers them.

It's not great tbh, but it's better then bum hole.

My house smells of rabbit and boys.

You’re brave to face the wrath of the dog owners on here whose perfect pooches never behave in any other way than angelical.

Dogs stink, dog owners stink of dog, dogs homes stink of dog and no scented candle or bottle of febreeze can hide it.

I’d stay at a hotel nearby OP and claim sudden onset of allergies.

Said by someone who has clearly never owned a dog ever!

It's definitely not as bad as bum hole.

My house smells of fresh flowers and scented candles, neither of which are intended to mask nasty doggy/bum holey niffs.

And I find it astonishing that anyone would put the feelings of guests over the family member - which is what a dog is - that actually lives there.

🤣 It's a dog! It really doesn't care if someone thinks it smells! It's not a family member. It's a pet.

00Platinum · 30/11/2025 16:48

yanbu,

I have a greyhound - large but not heavy. He can smell, even with baths and wearing a coat in the rain. The gas from that animal clears the room in seconds. But overall, it can be managed.

There are also dogs truly stink - and it does turn your stomach if trying to eat.

Just politely say you prefer your own space and don’t stay.

Ultimately, I wouldn’t judge the owner as it comes with the territory of having three(!) large dogs in the house, but it can be unpleasant as an outsider.

FiveShelties · 30/11/2025 20:34

SheinIsShite · 30/11/2025 11:32

Yes, because that's the polite and socially acceptable thing to do, isn't it? Hi friend, your house stinks. 🙄 If your user name reflects your living conditions, then 5 dogs will make your house stink too, but people are too polite to mention ot.

YANBU, @EasiestWayOut , houses with dogs smell. The owners either don't notice, or don't care. The fact they allow their dogs to beg while people are eating places them firmly in the "furbaby" category of owners.

I wouldn't be staying with her again. And I wouldn't be inviting her to my house either, as she'd assume she could bring her animals with her.

It is possible to tell friends things in a polite way, it does not have to be aggressive.

And just for your info as you seem concerned about my living conditions, I do not have 5 Shelties🙄
