Dog smell

I’m visiting a friend this weekend and she has three large dogs. The house stinks of dog, even upstairs where they’re supposedly not allowed to go. AIBU to just hate it? We’ve never been a dog family so I’m not used to it, but this morning the smell is turning my stomach.

Our house smells of dog. I wash their bedding weekly; get them groomed every six weeks; hoover every day; use scented candles etc , but there’s still a smell.

I spent yesterday washing all of the sofa and cushion covers. I can still smell it.

But, on balance, I’d rather have the dogs and the smell than no dogs at all.

I get it if you aren’t used to dogs, but you are being a bit rude.

Why did you go to stay with someone with 3 large dogs, surely you know her house would smell like dog ?

Some dogs seem to smell more than others depending on size, coat length, etc. I've certainly noticed that some dogs with floppy ears have an awful vomit-like whiff.

Also, with male dogs, depending on whether they’re intact or not.

Skybluepinky · 30/11/2025 10:48

People are kidding themselves if they have dogs and don’t think others can smell them as soon as they enter their house.

Overtheatlantic · 30/11/2025 10:52

Just visited a house with an elderly small dog with rotten teeth and a basset hound that stinks soooo badly. And they both wanted nothing more than to climb on top of me and my husband. Sweet dogs but our clothes went straight into the laundry. The cat was pristine and aesthetically pleasing!

PurpleDisco · 30/11/2025 10:57

I love big dogs but won’t have one for that very reason. People forget that they are animals not humans so should live outside! If big dogs could talk they would choose being outside every time instead of inside. 3 big ones in a house seems unfair on the dogs.

Pollqueen · 30/11/2025 11:06

You're brave posting on here OP but I agree with you and the poll is definitely in your favour

My neighbour has a spaniel and her house stinks, but I suspect they are immune to it

Our house does smell better after our dog was "done",

BackToLurk · 30/11/2025 11:09

I’m relying on the smell of dog putting off visitors tbh.

fluffiphlox · 30/11/2025 11:11

Every house where there is a dog smells, despite what the dog owners say.

zingally · 30/11/2025 11:12

I understand where you're coming from.

We bought our house from a lady that had 2 large hairy dogs. Fortunately, they were confined to the downstairs, but the room that has now become my office absolutely stank of dog (they slept in there).
We got the carpets professionally cleaned, but the man who did that said that honestly, you won't fully get rid of the dog smell until you repaint the whole room - which we weren't up for at that moment.
We put diffusers in there, and I'd say it's only about 13 months after moving in that the room no longer smells quite so "doggy".

Unfortunately, in the case of your friend, there's not much she can do about it, other can confine the dogs to the hard floor areas of the house.

Misanthropologie · 30/11/2025 11:12

Houses where dogs live do smell of dog and you are not wrong to hate it, it's rank. I don't go into dogs' houses and they don't come into mine. My friends are ok with that.

XWKD · 30/11/2025 11:16

Yes it's horrible. I was visiting a friend's mother who was sick, and the smell of the dog in the house was disgusting. I have friends with dogs in the house, but there's no bad smell at all. Maybe it's the breed.

stomachamelon · 30/11/2025 10:18

@Muffsiesi have a pug. She defo doesn’t smell of sweat and bum holes. But then she is regularly groomed :)

She doesn't to you,but I bet she does to visitors.

B1anche · 30/11/2025 11:26

I worked in a dog -friendly office for a while and the smell was unbearable. Never again!

Ha! Me too!! 😁

Noshowlomo · 30/11/2025 11:29

Yup they really stink.
My cats smell like fabric softener but the litter tray does get rank so I buy a new one every 1 months as the ammonia smell sticks to the plastic. It’s rank, but all animals come with a smell I suppose. But yeah all dog houses do have a stink about them

FiveShelties · 30/11/2025 10:04

Have you told your friend?

Yes, because that's the polite and socially acceptable thing to do, isn't it? Hi friend, your house stinks. 🙄 If your user name reflects your living conditions, then 5 dogs will make your house stink too, but people are too polite to mention ot.

YANBU, @EasiestWayOut , houses with dogs smell. The owners either don't notice, or don't care. The fact they allow their dogs to beg while people are eating places them firmly in the "furbaby" category of owners.

I wouldn't be staying with her again. And I wouldn't be inviting her to my house either, as she'd assume she could bring her animals with her.

I’m quite aware my house smells of dog. I have a fucking huge golden retriever who loves to fart, burp and roll in anything muddy. I do however choose my friends wisely and they are all either dog owners or dog lovers and if, by any chance discovered that they had been bitching about me and my home on social media then they wouldn’t be a friend any longer.

Would that be the ex Prince Andrew breed?

FFS🤣

Lifeneedsaresetagain · 30/11/2025 12:06

As someone with 2 large dogs there is no need for the house to smell of dog, or for them to be stealing your breakfast. I’d hate to stay somewhere like that for the weekend.

JustAn0therUsername · 30/11/2025 12:12

i have a large dogs and he stinks, especially when it’s been wet weather. I know we have guests who don’t like it. I manage it by covering our sofa in blankets so it’s easy to wash when we’re having visitors. I can’t get rid of the smell totally but I do clean, vac, and do my best if we are having visitors.

Dogs trying to steal food means they haven’t been trained well. That’s not ok and I don’t blame you for hating it.

Onleemoi · 30/11/2025 12:19

Do you all think houses without dogs smell neutral?

sciaticafanatica · 30/11/2025 12:20

Dogs and their owner just smell of dog smell.
their houses and clothes stink but they become nose blind to it.

Changename12 · 30/11/2025 12:30

People who have pets never think their house smells of them but it always does. Most people, even the ones without pets, can’t recognise the smell of their own home because they are used to it.
