I havenot seen Shutter Island because when I read the book when it was first released, before the movie was made, the ending was obvious from about a quarter of the way through.

Presumably the movie did it better or DiCaprio handled it skillfully.

I recently bought the book but haven't started it yet. I have seen the film though and no, I absolutely didn't see it coming! So for once I'm glad I didn't read the book first.

Not strictly speaking the end of the film, but the end of Schindler's list.

Already mentioned but The Mist. Absolutely devastating. Interestingly, the Stephen King novella that it's based on doesn't end on such a bleak note!

SPOILER

Pride. Every time I read the caption about Mark Ashton's death, "He was 26 years old" I just sob like a baby. Great film.

Absolutely outstanding.

Oh God, and this. I cried my eyes out.

BratPitt · 26/11/2025 12:07

The Great Escape.

Mind you my first thought was Four Weddings as that shite "is it raining?" line is probably the worst line ever and therefore stays in my mind when you think of movie endings.

The Elephant Man

Oh I know. I think the makers of the film were trying to see just how outrageous & grotesque they could make it. My friend told me not to watch it. I did & said I liked it. She said "wtf is wrong with you?!" 🤣

Whatsthatmadflippergoneandflippingdonenow · 26/11/2025 18:13

I saw it in the cinema and I was trying not to laugh out loud and annoy others. But then I saw everyone near me laughing too so it was fine.

I recently learnt the truth about ‘All Dogs Go to Heaven’ (1990 animation) and cried my absolute heart out 💔

The end of the film is sad and sweet but when you learn the truth about what happened to that little girl (Judith Barsi) it is unbearable. They almost couldn’t film the end sequence as Burt Reynolds couldn’t keep it together.
