Soylent Green
The Mechanic (Charles Bronson)

Oooh, yes. Love both of those.

I loved how they used the speech from Soylent Green in the fabulous Drop Dead Gorgeous. It was so bizarre.

Charle Bronson is sadly almost forgotten, yet he was great in the right role. Jan Michael Vincent too, but he was a bit sad ultimately.

@LuncheonInThePark I went though a lengthy phase of reading books with unexpected endings, so always came to "expect the unexpected". Nowadays I tend to avoid books which tout the endings/psycholical thrillers as they're generally a letdown. I sound pretentious, but it's just that at one one stage I was reading 5/6 books a weeks, and I tend to go from reading one genre for ages and then to another genre.

My mum, however, could generally pick the endings in most films. She had set formulas for it.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 26/11/2025 20:37

I can't remember what it's called but in the film a woman realises her rapist (and father of her twins) is actually her son that was adopted at birth.

Yes, I read a John Marrs book a few days ago that everyone had been raving about. But I had it figured out within the first 2 chapters so it was very disappointing!

Tempted to ask what your Mum's formula is, but I like being shocked so probably best I don't know!

Seven
Shutter Island
Fight Club (surprised me and I remembered the twist but I had forgotten the actual ending until I re-watched it recently)
The Wizard of Oz (Judy Garland version)
Moon
As someone else mentioned the end of Planet of the Apes when you see the Statue of Liberty...
Terminator
Mostly these are where you come away thinking oh hell no!!

WhatCanICook · 26/11/2025 21:34

My first thought was the film Lion. Just when I thought I couldn't sob anymore there was real life footage when the credits started rolling that was so emotional.

Agree with Billy Elliot too

countingdowntotheholidays · 26/11/2025 21:38

Yes Lion was incredibly moving. Likewise Philomena.

Classiccar1 · 26/11/2025 21:51

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Carrie (1976). When her arm comes out of the ground at the end I nearly ended up on my wife's lap in the cinema.
I'd also second Soylent Green, Edward G Robinson's last film and Casablanca when Bogart shoots the Nazi officer.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/11/2025 21:55

Agree with the suggestions above of
Les Diaboliques
Usual Suspects
Wicker Man
Some Like it Hot.

I'll add Birdy. (1984 Alan Parker film)

pennypip69 · 25/11/2025 22:15

Planet of the Apes, the original movie with Charlton Heston.
wow

That was a nightmare for me. I was stunned at how hopeless I felt.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 27/11/2025 13:08

Not the end of the film, but the plot twist in The Crying Game had the whole audience stunned when I saw it.

I watched it a few years later on DVD with DH who hadn't got a clue what it was about. He was equally stunned.

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 29/11/2025 08:50

I mentioned Brighton Rock, well if anyone wants to watch Richard Attenborough as a really nasty piece of work its on this afternoon at 2.15 on Talking Pictures.

NotDarkGothicMama · 29/11/2025 09:07

Seven Pounds. I cried in the cinema and I'm not usually a fan of Will Smith.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/11/2025 09:10

Sixth Sense
Shutter Island
The Others
Conclave
Dead of Winter

countingdowntotheholidays · 29/11/2025 11:55

oh yes indeed Conclave does go in a direction that wouldn’t even enter your head!

magimedi · 29/11/2025 11:58

Gotback · 26/11/2025 13:15

Casablanca

Indeed. The perfec ending to a perfect film. (Of its time).

Jasmin71 · 29/11/2025 11:59

Sixth Sense
Shutter Island
Usual suspects

XWKD · 29/11/2025 12:02

The Blair Witch Project.

HRTQueen · 29/11/2025 12:02

AgapanthusPink · 25/11/2025 22:19

The original Dutch film ‘The Vanishing’ (Spoorloos). The end still sticks in mind. Unfortunately Hollywood got hold of it and added an extra 30 mins to make the ending ‘nicer’ and totally spoilt the impact of the original ending.

I agree. I watched it again recently it’s very disturbing and wished i hadn’t

Changeling (not The Changeling) 😥

Billy Elliot is a beautiful ending to a harsh gritty film

I really liked the ending of The Sopranos i thought it was very clever way to end such a fantastic series

AreThereSomewhereIslands · 29/11/2025 12:27

Joyeux Noël.

As a heads-up, and without giving away vital plot points, this is NOT a feelgood Christmas film. I've never cried so much in my life as I did at the end of this one.
