To think all schools should teach children the old traditional hymns

Just switching between channels and Songs of Praise came on. It was a run down of the most popular school hymns.complete with recorders It brought back many memories and how important communal singing is. It doesn’t matter what your religion is, everyone should know the most popular hymns as a way of uniting society.

Christ alive what awful songs you grew up singing. Did you feel guilty just singing white pop songs?

As opposed to your personal preference - white rock music?

RedTagAlan · 24/11/2025 16:00

Staringintothevoid616 · 24/11/2025 15:42

And so are you.

Your link does not backup your claim

We can argue over what source is more reliable, but no matter really.

I listen to heavy metal music totally different

Probably quite a few. I know it’s not what you want - but it’s what is happening!

Is it? Evidence?
And FWIW, I am a regular church goer (raging atheist, but MIL is a bishop). I'm sure I know more about 2025 church than you, who sings a hymn once a year.

Yeah. Totally different. You're not like other bigots hymn enthusiasts.

Oh bless you and the ever impartial BBC in a state of panic over young white men

No need for blessings or hymns

Are these the kind of British Christians you are looking for?

Jasmin71 · 24/11/2025 16:07

No.

Who do you think make up these numbers - there seems to be lots of “raging atheists” on here lol. So you attend church regularly- thanks for proving my point you can participate in religious practices without being “brainwashed”

Is that written by the cousin of an Hamas leader? - asking for a friend.

Poster just put up a link, didn't seem to be panicking and the BBC are just reporting, backed up by quotes. It seems a balanced, moderate article to me.

Staringintothevoid616 · 24/11/2025 15:49

Well we could discuss the accuracy of the Bible, but Egypt is highly symbolic here

You are saying the Bible is wrong, aren't you ?

So that means you think the Bible contains lies ?

And you want us to sing about it, and celebrate these lies.

And remember, you said parents who preferred their children not to do religious stuff at school were bad parents.

See where this goes....

You think parents not wanting their children to be exposed to lies are bad parents.

Yup, aint religion great eh.

What is being questioned is not that the numbers are "made up", it's what they suggest, more that they don't necessarily suggest what you are contending they do.

Care to answer the question?

The article is written by Aleem Maqbool, Religion editor and Catherine Wyatt as stated by the BBC.

Staringintothevoid616 · 24/11/2025 15:46

Well the poster is absolutely correct.

Can you remember the words to that song? Did it say anything about constructing good arguments and avoiding ad hominem arguments

Its a stupid point.

Most hymns that sre poppuar in the UK were only written within the last 100-200 years.

School nativity plays have only been popular since the 1950s.

Clearly, neither are necessary to understand the centuries/millennia of culture that preceded them, or that culture never would have existed.

SeaAndStars · 24/11/2025 16:22

Even the festival of lessons and carols that most people who go to church over Christmas experience has only been going for 150 years or so.

SeaAndStars · 24/11/2025 16:22

What are you doing to promote hymn singing and cohesion in your community OP?

I don't think OP has actually read either of the two reports. Far easier to see a number you like the look of and run with it.

Yup.

That article about Tommy Robinson mentions another topic that came up on Mumsnet recently - Christmas Markets being "renamed" Festive Markets, Winter Fairs and alike.

The complainer, seemingly, being unable to remember that Christmas Markets have only been popular in the UK since the 1990s, whereas winter fairs have a much longer history in country.

A lot of people seem to have think "I did X as a child, therefore it must be a longstanding part of our culture".

A shame people don't spend half as long learning about their own culture as they do attempting to defend/preserve it.

It's almost as if there are other motivations at play....

As a side, I have debated a lot of flat earthers online. And in that community we have what we call McToons first law of flerth: Citations NEVER match claims made.

I find it true in most "passion issues".

If you think the increase in young men attending Christian church is related to faith and not misogyny, then you are not paying attention to what is going on in society.

And that is linked to my question how? Where have I mentioned Christmas Markets.

You appear to have a narrative and are desperate to squeeze it into this thread. Sorry but no points!

I would rather education be secular with a specific class teaching all world religions and priviliging none.

I’m sure the rise in church going is linked to a broad range of reasons, people are, after all, drawn to religion for various reasons.

Probably the vast majority of men in a mosque quote like women. Being kept in their place outside the mens only areas.
