To wonder why the economy, and people are struggling financially when the government could just.. ‘print’ more money to plow into it.

I just find it absolutely bizarre that businesses, NHS, education, benefits, taxpayers struggle so hard when money is literally a man made concept that we print and just ‘decide’ how much to have? Just ‘print’ more, if we created money and let’s be honest it’s just numbers, numbers are infinite.. put more into the NHS.. put more into education..

There is absolutely no reason anyone should have to struggle with money at it just baffles me that the UK is the way that it is because of some shite we made up 🤣

What makes that person more intrinsically important than the person who doesn’t want to feed into the capitalist system by working a dead end job for some corporate yahoo? You know jobs didn’t used to be a thing until they were invented by the western imperialist white supremacist capitalist system?

If we all just downed tools one day and refused to feed this deeply unfair system, we could collapse it in a day. Then we could go back to doing whatever we wanted like it used to be, with no need to work for some corporation just to afford a few apples for sustenance.

Do you think people'did what they wanted' at any other time in history? Did early Man walk across the world just because they fancied the challenge or to look for somewhere that was better for themselves and their families? Why did they go out hunting and gathering day in and day out and invent things like cooking and settling in communities? Do you think they 'did what they liked' or they did what they had to to survive? Even animals in the wild don't 'do what they want'. They do what they have to to survive. If everyone did what they wanted, what if no one wanted to do anything? Who would farm crops for us to eat? Fancy living on whatever you can grow in your own garden? Who would build our houses and with what materials? Who would run the power plants? We would all be back to agrarian living in huts we had to build ourselves and existing on carrots and potatoes we could grow in our own garden. We would have to chop down our own trees for fuel as who would do dirty and dangerous work like working on an oil rig or mine? Why would you even bother training to be an engineer to build wind farms or to bother maintaining them when you could just sit around doing nothing? The alternative is the Communist system where you can't do what you want because the State tells you what to do. That doesn't work because as we have seen from history, taking peoples land and forcing people to work on them when they don't know how to do it leads to famine and mass starvation. Fancy being treated by someone forced to train as a doctor?

Firstsuggestions · 23/11/2025 10:51

I'm on @RisenWhine side. Not with the printing money but with the fact those in power have come up with arbitrary rules that consolidate and protect their wealth and privilege. OP is right in that money isn't real. If there's a nuclear apocalypse, the person who owns the most chickens and can grow their own food will be 'wealthier' than Elon Musk.

We have enough to feed and house everyone and yet we choose not to because we have been convinced to play by made up rules in a game we can't win. I have no problem with some wealth inequality and that those who work hard should be able to earn more and have certain advantages. I don't agree this goes as far as one person can have more money that entire countries while babies starve to death. I also think this only works if the system isn't rigged, then fair enough, we all start equal and those who do more get more. That's not what happens, those who have advantages build on and protect them. I'm no better i'll fully admit to being middle class and my kids are already getting advantages.

I will always remember a friend from school from a very difficult background. Brighter than me in every subject, harder worker, wonderful person. However, she didn't know how to play the game, how to talk to adults, how to interview. I did because I'd been prepped for it. In a fair world she would outearn me by a country mile but it was stacked against her from the beginning.

Bleurghie · 23/11/2025 10:55

OP, so you want to work part time and redistribute the wealth of those who work a 40 hour week.

Why should we sub you?

Dude, you’ve seen my question. Do you really think I have the brain power to achieve what musk has? 😂

but if by chance i ever did aquire the wealth to make a genuine difference to the world, let alone just the UK then yes I absolutely would. He, even living lavishly could never spend his money. Who needs that amount of money? It’s ridiculous.

Edited

if by chance i ever did aquire the wealth to make a genuine difference to the world, let alone just the UK then yes I absolutely would - of course you would love! I am sure you are sharing everything you have now to those in need 😂

Izet · 23/11/2025 10:55

Not sure why everyone is pooh pooing this given it's exactly what we did from 2009-2021. It's also got a lot to do with the bloody mess we're in now, so it was a bad idea, but it's not an outlandish suggestion. It's been our economic strategy for most of the century.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 23/11/2025 10:50

I'd suggest you look at his broader influence on politics before you decide he's a good thing.

Clean energy entrepreneurs can be found elsewhere, space exploration is not a priority for the world right now, I would say - and starlink extremely worrying for someone as prone to political interference as him.

I have seen. Been a bit silly on twitter. I don't care. I don't tweet. I just use it to see what's going on.

He's done good work on EVs and on solar. He's done great work on energy storage as well.

Space exploration is cool and pushes humanity to the next level. Starlink is awesome as well.

What a load of waffle. If we gave everyone exactly the same it would be even more unfair. For example, why should someone who works a 40 hour work earn the same as someone who works a 20 hour week?

You're living in lala land. We are not cavemen anymore.

I don’t do much of anything, I work part time, try to keep my kids healthy and basically just cook and clean. School was a terrible time for me so I didn’t take much away from it I must admit. I became a dental nurse but the pay was so ridiculously poor I had to leave after my first child was born for something that would actually pay the bills.

obviously, I can read. But I’m limited to only mumsnet and TikTok, which is where I get all of my fact based vital information 🙄

Why would you say you can't read then?

And why are you limited to MN and TikTok? Surely that's self-limited and easily remedied?

Izet · 23/11/2025 11:03

Only if you are one of those who doesn't have much money now.

You don't need to be someone who doesn't have much money to recognise that £1 billion is an insane amount of money for one person to own. It's gone way beyond the point where it gives them any personal tangible benefit; it's a nonsense amount, just zeros heading into nothing.

IhateHPSDeaneCnt · 23/11/2025 11:03

This must be click bait. Nobody could be that stupid.
Read up about the rise of Nazi Germany - when people were taking wheelbarrows of useless currency to buy a loaf of bread.

Yes it’s one of the BoE strategies, moving the base rate and quantitative easing…

but it’s what really f’d up the economy during the pandemic. Cheers Rishi

HoppingPavlova · 23/11/2025 11:07

Because the currency would become basically worthless. You would need to take several boxes filled with notes to buy a loaf of bread🫤. Everyone could be millionaire's, yet not afford a loaf of bread.

I'm hoping you are just being provocative and aren't as really as daft and ill informed as the OP. Twitter has nothing to do with it.

The collapses of global political systems, in which he is playing an active part because we as a society is allowing it, will mean that most of us will not benefit from any benefits from Tesla or any other projects you mention.

Lots of people don't want to, and people have always hoarded resources and fought over them before money existed.

I'm not sure socialism tallies well with human nature, but yes this country was a better place when wealth was more evenly distributed and I v much doubt Brexit would have happened if that were still the case

Also agree on the taxing of billionaires and the system where 5 people can control such a vast amount of wealth and communication

Assuming we don't mess the world up completely (quite likely) I am sure we'll look back on this period with amazement of the lack of regulation of what is basically the Wild West

When was wealth more evenly distributed?

Thatsalineallright · 23/11/2025 11:17

RisenWhine · 23/11/2025 09:40

Why is ambition based on how much richer you are than someone else?

So do you feel better knowing you shop at Waitrose while your neighbour runs to the food bank? Or do you teach your privately educated children to stick their nose up at state school kids?

why shouldn’t everyone be equal and treated as such?

Why shouldn't everyone be equal? Well...

Imagine you're in a group of 50 people who are living in an island in the middle of nowhere, cut off from civilisation. Together you set up shelter, forage for food, start trying to make clothes out of palm leaves.

All of you are busy all day. Then one day one man says "hey actually, I just want to lie on the beach all day and relax".

You and others say "no, we need to keep working so that we can eat" and you continue working hard all day long. Would you be happy to give the food you've grown to the lazy guy sunbathing on the beach?

I personally wouldn't. I would want to keep my hard earned food to myself and the rest of the group who actually worked for it. If I were forced to give the food to the lazy guy, I might decide to just stop working myself. I'll just join the lazy guy and get free food as well.

If everyone else says "good idea, we also want to laze around on the beach and get free food", will there be any food to eat? No, you'll run out very quickly and everyone will starve.

So then someone has to step in and force you to work. So you're working at gunpoint to produce food that then is given to all the lazy people on the beach. You are angry and resentful. You purposefully do a bad job and produce as little as possible. There is not enough food for everyone because not enough is being grown.

Countries that have tried pure communism have all failed. Millions died in China and the Soviet Union due to starvation. Nowadays there are countries like Cuba and modern-day China that are supposedly socialist/communist but in practice have adopted a lot of capitalist ideas. And even then, just ask yourself - where would you prefer to live and where would you have a better quality of life? The UK or China? I suspect you'd answer the UK.

Do you not think, especially as you have children, that it is your responsibility to understand more about what is going on in the world? And Tik Tok and MN are not places to be getting information that impacts every day of your life

Yeah the BoE printed extra money for 13 years to buy our bonds so that asset prices including property would continue to rise. We indemnified them against any losses so now that they're tightening we're getting hammered by the fall in value of all those bonds.

If I ruled the world I would make Mr Musk and his billionaire friends share their wealth evenly.

surely we can just reset the world by sharing all wealth. Everyone equal. Makes sense doesn’t it?

I’m sorry why equal? Why should someone who has worked hard for their money or who has had an original idea and took the opportunity to turn it into a profitable business share their money with people who have sat at home watching day time tv?

And print more money to solve the money problem - You haven’t gone to school, have you? Zero understanding of economics.

Oh come on. You're not limited to Mumsnet and TikTok, are you? You choose to be limited to them. If you can read threads on Mumsnet, you can read other things too. The world of written media is not limited to just either MN/TikTok and really difficult stuff that only highly educated people can read. There's plenty in between!

You could easily have just googled 'Why can't we just print more money' and found a simple explanation without being mocked about it on here! You're standing up cheerfully to the mockery though - fair play!
