To complain that my pizza wasn’t cut for me?

Spent £30 with Papa John’s. Love their pizzas. Special garlic sauce is amazing!

Anyway, they didn’t cut my pizza. AIBU to have complained through the Just Eat App?

Have been told by the cocky manager to consider buying a pizza cutter

Have them semi regularly as a treat and they’re always cut into slices, as most take away are!

H thinks I’m being silly.

Obviously this isn’t a world shattering issue, of course. But interested to see if I’m unreasonably unfair here to complain

I've occasionally ordered Papa John's, was always cut.

And if it wasn’t would you be so outraged that you’d post online and complain or would you just think ‘oh that’s a bit odd’ and cut it yourself?

PaulineMush · 23/11/2025 14:28

But, but...what if they had cut it, only into the wrong sized slices. Would you be suing them for the cost of therapy?

Geez.

I find it incredible that you could be arsed to complain that someone had forgotten to slice your delivery pizza.

What did you expect them to do about it?

How has complaining changed anything?

How hard was it to cut your own pizza?

What were you hoping to achieve with your complaint?

I'm a bit embarrassed for you.

I'd think any decent pizza place would cut their pizza. Like putting sauce or cheese it as standard.

Do I live on a different planet? I've been to Pizza Express loads of times, and also Italy, but I can't remember having my food cut up for me

If I'd been 'told by the cocky manager to consider buying a pizza cutter' yes, I'd post a bad review.

Do you think that’s going to stop anyone else from buying pizza there?

Typically, that's because a pie is for one person and you cut your desired pieces to how you prefer to eat it. Take away is often cut. This can vary by restaurant or region.

But, Papa John's is an American chain and the customary presentation is to cut a pie into serving slices, so it isn't outrageous to be annoyed it wasn't served as expected as the expectation was correct.

Obviously, it's not a huge problem and OP said that. "Complain " might've been the wrong word, but surely bringing it to the shop's attention wasn't incorrect? The manager's sarcasm is worthy of a complaint, though. The attitude is against Papa John's code of conduct and mission to provide excellence. Customer's have a right to expect a superior product and service in all respects because that is exactly what Papa John's promises. That's the brand.

A pie is not a pizza. A pizza is not a pie.

It's the American term to refer to a whole pizza.

You’ve managed to be arsey with the OP and show off about how far above common little fast food brands you are in one post. Have a medal.

Aw, thanks my dear. I was hoping you’d notice.

Pizza Pie is an annoying term. A pizza is a pizza, not a pie. Americans don't really even eat savoury pies so I don't know where it came from.

There is/was a thing called calzone though, which is rather like a pie. Not sure why anyone would want one though

Italian immigrants to the US called pizza, pizza pie, as pizza was unknown there, but pie wasn't. Pizza pie was coined so it wouldn't sound so foreign.

As for savoury pies, chicken pot pie is the most popular. But, you are right that sweet pies dominate.

Not really

WalkDontWalk · 25/11/2025 08:43

Never, ever go to Pizza Express. Even if you're eating in, they don't cut up your pizza. Really. They literally give you the pizza on a plate, next to your knife and fork, and it's all in one piece. They do it deliberately. Then they all stand around - cooks, waiting staff, manager, all round the table - and they watch you cut it up yourself, smirking and nudging each other. It's just grim. You couldn't make it up. There ought to be a law. The world's gone mad. I blame Sadiq Khan.

Mind you, their tiramisu is to die for.

Apollonia1 · 25/11/2025 09:18

I much prefer if a takeaway does not cut my pizza! Sometimes Pizza Express cuts it into 6 slices! I feel robbed of my other two slices, or try to cut the 1/6 in half.

Halfquarterbag · 25/11/2025 19:49

pizza(n.)
"a savoury dish of Italian origin, consisting of a base of dough, spread with a selection of such ingredients as olives, tomatoes, cheese, anchovies, etc., and baked in a very hot oven" [OED, 1989], 1845, from Italian pizza, originally "cake, tart, pie," a name of uncertain origin

Could pizza and pie possibly be related, etymologically?

Good old Goggle:

The term “pizza pie” originated in the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when Italian immigrants introduced pizza. Because pizza was round, had a crust, and was cut into triangular slices—similar to fruit pies—it was nicknamed “tomato pie.” Over time, the English word “pie” blended with the Italian word “pizza,” giving us the familiar phrase “pizza pie.”

You can see perfectly well that the poster is referring to the US. I wouldn’t call a pizza a pie either, but I can work out that not everyone is the same.
