To not really get why people don’t like clothes?

I’m not talking about specifically liking fashion or following certain trends.

I mean in general, clothes are a personal choice. They can express who you are, there’s do much choice out there. Why people say they don’t care what they wear?

OP posts:
Peridoteage · 22/11/2025 07:09

women of all ages and sizes are on there posting their looks and your algorithm will soon start putting forward suggestions based on your likes.

But its just marketing 😂why i want this
I don't want to buy any more clothes. I don't care at all what other people think or how I'm "expressing myself". I'm ok with it if what I'm expressing is "I'm not bothered about fashion/clothes".

PomegranateVase · 22/11/2025 05:29

I completely agree with you op, and I think the psychology of clothes and footwear is so important too.

To you, the OP and some others, sure.

But can you accept that others don't feel that way about clothes? Or are you as closed minded as the OP who cannot grasp that people understand her point but aren't like her (or you)?

GymBergerac · 22/11/2025 07:14

Because I don't feel any need to 'express myself' either by clothes or anything else! I'm just who I am and I imagine that comes across in how I behave and how I treat others.
I either wear sports gear, work uniform or slobbing round doing housework/gardening grubby clothes.
Everyone is different, some folks enjoy shopping and spending money on clothes; other people don't!

keeponwishing · 21/11/2025 18:52

You’re just not getting it.

Also do people still say on the pull? And you’d genuinely only dress a certain way because you want to attract someone rather than wearing something because you like it?

I’m not talking about dressing to impress strangers. I’m saying express your identity. Someone dressing as a goth may be viewed as sometimes unconventional but it’s that person expressing themselves - and I’m sure they aren’t doing it for strangers.

See I think someone dressing as a goth (or in any particular style) is definitely doing it for others. If they were transported to a desert island with no one else around they might keep it up for a short while but ultimately would stop caring what they look like.

I'm not saying dressing nicely or in a particular style is a bad thing. Just that it isn't just about the individual, it's about identifying with a certain group, about how we want others to view us (you yourself said this is one of your motivations), about how much we've been influenced by marketing etc.

LilyCanna · 22/11/2025 07:22

OP: “I don’t understand why not everyone puts a lot of effort into expressing their personality to strangers through their clothes.”

Most answers: “I can’t be bothered, as long as I’m presentable and comfortable, I don’t care that much about the opinion of strangers and there are more interesting things about me than my clothes.”

OP: cannot compute that people disagree with her and accuses everyone of being too stupid to understand what she means.

Again clearly the concept has been too difficult for you to understand. I never said it’s about spending hours working out what to wear, or spending ££££ a year.

People use clothes to express who they are.
What you wear shows your personality, mood, identity, confidence and how you want the world to see you. It’s basically a form of non-verbal communication and self-expression.

Firstly, you're being very rude. People do understand what you're saying. You're just too dogmatic to believe that.

I don't care any 6 clothes. I care that they're comfortable and are socially acceptable (i.e. Weekend expectations or going to weddings), but that's it. I have no thoughts of expressing who I am via my clothing choices, apart from that I'm someone who has no time for people who will make judgements about my character based on what I choose to cover my body with.

People are different. That's all there is to it. To me and to many others, clothes are purely functional and we choose to spend our time, money and mental energy on other things.

Mama2many73 · 22/11/2025 07:24

Im 54 and overweight and I really hate shopping for clothes but that was exactly the same when I was 15 and a size 10!! I hate shopping for clothes, and hate ordering online even more.
If I'm invited to an 'occasion' id probably have to go shopping for clothes, my life is about practicality, parent/foster carer/dog walker and thats what I buy clothes for and what I feel comfortable with.
Clothes are bad enough but shopping for shoes is even worse!! I own about 8 pairs, mainly trainers/hiking boots and a couple of pairs of smarter boots. I do not own a pair of heels.

You are still however expressing yourself by making functional rather than aesthetic choices.

Sequinsoneverythingplease · 22/11/2025 07:27

Clothes - choosing them, wearing them, accessorising them bores me to tears. My job requires warm thermal base layers - outdoors work - in the winter and shorts and t shirts in the summer and that’s all I buy and wear. I usually buy something nice to wear over Christmas and that’s it.

So what is the OP's point? She's asking if she's unreasonable to not get why people don't like clothes. People have told her. She says they're wrong and don't understand her.

Someone dressin go as a goth is identifying with other goths. Clothing is tribal.

They wouldn’t dress as a Goth on a deserted islnd as there would be no other goths and therefore no one to identify with.

I was a Goth in the 80’s. It was more about rejecting mainstream stuff than impressing people. But it was a tribal thing. There was no goth marketing in the 80’s though. But it was a reaction to mainstream marketing.

SunandRain101 · 22/11/2025 07:34

For me its the leggings, can't stand them. It doesnt suit everyone.
If you dont go to gym, you don't have to show off flat backside.
They are cheap and i can see what underwear you wear. To me its tacky and tasteless.
But people do people. Its just personal free choice option. I never laughed about the person or been mean ever.
What i wear others too dont like, so i don't go on stressing about it.
However...there is fine line to tacky and dressed decently.

Some people like clothes, some don’t. There is no wrong or right.

I find them fascinating.

SpicyRedRobin · 22/11/2025 07:38

I think for some people, if they feel they are deeply unattractive they think it's pointless to put the effort in.

Also different people have different priorities. I would not wear jogging bottoms in public, whereas for others it's their everyday attire.

Yes exactly, identifying with a certain group.

TheDivergentEnigma · 22/11/2025 07:40

I hate shopping; however, what I do wear fits well, is clean, tidy, and I do make sure I'm turned out well. I dont care about fashion, however, what I hate most about what's in the shops is that what I want to wear often doesnt come in women's sizes. For example, I look at styles of trousers/cargo pants, etc that only come in men's sizes, and the women's sizes are a completely different cut, missing pockets, and come in colours I hate. Therefore, it's very difficult to 'express' my personality as I just dont conform to what retailers sell for women, and why should I compromise?.
Like I said, though, it doesn't stop me from making sure I'm well turned out, tidy.

And this is what all clothing does. It’s all tribal.

No, it’s you who isn’t getting it. It’s a form of non-verbal communication and self-expression for some people. Not all. Your inability to grasp that concept, despite the many answers on this thread to that effect, is astounding. The way you then insult those who don’t fall in with your world view is just sad. Your attitude has made this a really depressing thread

It’s for all people. Everything you choose or reject says something about you.

Some people consciously choose clothes to express and the rest do. It unconsciously by professing no interest. It’s all communication though, even if you don’t want it to be.

RubySquid · 22/11/2025 07:48

keeponwishing · 21/11/2025 18:44

Gosh everyone is different? Never heard that before.

Of course there’s different ways to express your personality. You’re clearly not understanding that if I walked by you and the street I’d know nothing about you apart from a judgment based ln how you decide to present yourself?

No one who doesn’t know me would walk by me and think … wow she’s got a great heart and good sense of humour and the way she expresses her art in her home is something to be admired.

Do you care that much what people would walk past you would think? It's never occured to me to worry about something like that

’vacuous’

Too lowbrow for you? It’s many many things. Vacuous isn’t one of them. Do you regard anthropology as vacuous? Because that’s what it is.

I've always been totally into clothes! What I wear is really important to me, and I absolutely judge pretty much everyone on what they choose to put on 😂
If you don't care, or are unimaginative in your choice of clothes, or dull or scruffy, we probably won't get on 😂

So you could meet the kindest, most interesting and vibrant person at a party......but you would judge them and overlook them based on the clothes on their back? Possibly the most shallow thing I have read in a long time.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/11/2025 08:04

SouthernNights59 · 22/11/2025 05:29

I find it sad that such an insanely trivial matter can affect your day so much. I have hundreds of things going through my mind every day, I don't have time to be focusing on a colour not matching "properly".

Maybe I’m just insanely trivial. But l’m not.

il find it weird that it wouldn’t bother you. I also have loads of things going through my head, it’s not just your mind.

But it’s all anthropolgy. Some people like clothes, some don’t. It’s all tribal.

No you are misunderstanding it.

Clothes are tribal. They help us identify potential mates and friends. It’s not all about personality.

sashh · 22/11/2025 08:08

I have arthritis.

My clothing is selected because of a lack of buttons / fastenings.

Roomy enough for swollen joints or to allow for wrist splints.

Shoes have to be flat and preferably slip on.
