To not really get why people don’t like clothes?

I’m not talking about specifically liking fashion or following certain trends.

I mean in general, clothes are a personal choice. They can express who you are, there’s do much choice out there. Why people say they don’t care what they wear?

I care in as much that I won’t be walking around in pyjamas or clothes that are dirty, or in a poor state of repair. But I have sort of given up, because I just am absolutely no good at dressing myself to suit my body and looks “put together”. I just always get it wrong and end up pissed off at wasting money on clothes that are actually horrible on me or down that I just want to look nice but failed again. So it’s easier to just stick to a very basic, plane “uniform”. I’m rarely told I look nice, but I am clean and presentable. That’s about as good I can can achieve

I really envy people who know how to express themselves well in their styles.

Having been overweight, obese, morbidly obese and back to overweight, clothes shopping has been something I’ve hated my whole life. The only thing I’m interested in with clothing is how much it’s able to cover up or disguise the flab. I don’t ever think I look good in anything I ever wear, so I go for comfort.

Exactly how I feel. I’d love to look good in nice clothes but no point trying to polish a turd.

Because some people prefer to express themselves in different ways?
Surely you haven’t made it to adulthood without realising everyone is different?

Gosh everyone is different? Never heard that before.

Of course there’s different ways to express your personality. You’re clearly not understanding that if I walked by you and the street I’d know nothing about you apart from a judgment based ln how you decide to present yourself?

No one who doesn’t know me would walk by me and think … wow she’s got a great heart and good sense of humour and the way she expresses her art in her home is something to be admired.

I’d rather wear something comfortable and ‘express who I am’ by talking about something interesting. I do appreciate the style of stylish friends, and think of it as part of who they are, but not the most interesting part or at all essential!

I’d prefer not to expend any mental energy on what people I don’t know who walk past me think of me, as long as I’m not upsetting them with terrible BO or something. I guess if I was single and on the pull or famous and likely to be papped then I might

This makes me sad to hear. And I feel like that sometimes. Do you ever use TikTok? - it’s not just a kids app, women of all ages and sizes are on there posting their looks and your algorithm will soon start putting forward suggestions based on your likes.

I’ve had loads of insp on there, and taught myself different hairstyles.

I like to look nice, but prefer to look nice myself rather than wear nice looking garments, if that makes sense? So I know what styles and colours make me look good, set off my shape, hair, skin tone, and just choose plain things that do that. So, for example I might wear a black dress of a certain length, fitted in a certain way for years and just update it with shoes bag or whatever. I'm not really bothered about what comes in and out of style, or what might catch my eye, because I already know what I wear.

taxguru · 21/11/2025 18:51

I have no interest in "expressing myself" in terms of looks. Looks are easily "faked" so aren't a reliable indicator of the person/personality. I prefer to base myself and other people on their actions, not superficial looks.

Hohumdedum · 21/11/2025 18:52

I have clothes I enjoy wearing now because, in my 40s, I've finally found brands and garments that I like, have the confidence to wear, can afford and nice fabrics. Also have Vinted!

For most of my childhood I had no interest in clothes, and was happy in whatever my Mum chose.

As a teenager I tried to choose cool clothes occasionally, but I was geeky and never got it right. Always felt foolish and underconfident. Much safer just wearing jeans and a basic top.

I was also very thin and finding stuff that even fitted was stressful. I hated the process of shopping. Trailing around from shop to shop and finding nothing. Urghh.

In my 20/30s I was too busy with hobbies and travelling to care about clothes. I looked presentable and appropriate though.

MsWilmottsGhost · 21/11/2025 18:52

People in an old fleece and tracky bottoms are expressing themselves though, they're saying they prefer comfort over fashion 🤷 nowt wrong with that at all!

I was a jeans and t-shirt type when I was young, absolutely hated fashion. Now I take much more interest in trends and like colours and fabrics and playing with combinations. My younger self would roll her eyes at women dressed like me 🙄 but now I really don't give a fuck I am far more adventurous.

You’re just not getting it.

Also do people still say on the pull? And you’d genuinely only dress a certain way because you want to attract someone rather than wearing something because you like it?

I’m not talking about dressing to impress strangers. I’m saying express your identity. Someone dressing as a goth may be viewed as sometimes unconventional but it’s that person expressing themselves - and I’m sure they aren’t doing it for strangers.

Why do you care what people on the street think about you?

Wearing clothes to express yourself matters because your outfit speaks before you do — it sends signals about your mood, identity, confidence, and personality without needing a single word.

butterycroissants · 21/11/2025 18:55

I care in that I want to look clean and wear clothes that fit me and are comfortable, but otherwise, meh. I have too many sensory issues around clothing and texture to be bothered outside of that.

Butchyrestingface · 21/11/2025 18:56

InterestedDad37 · 21/11/2025 18:12

I've always been totally into clothes! What I wear is really important to me, and I absolutely judge pretty much everyone on what they choose to put on 😂
If you don't care, or are unimaginative in your choice of clothes, or dull or scruffy, we probably won't get on 😂

As good a reason to go out dressed in bin liner as I've ever heard.

PracticalPixie · 21/11/2025 18:57

I think not caring what you wear is a statement in itself. It is another form of expression.

I love clothes but dh doesn't care about them at all. He has shaved his head since he was 16 and just wears jeans, tshirts, jumpers / hoodies everyday, unless he's in the office when we wears work trousers and a shirt. I actually envy how simply his wardrobe is tbh! He never has to think too hard about what to wear

RocketPanda · 21/11/2025 18:57

I'm old and frankly lucky to be still on this side of the soil. I wear whats comfortable and fits because there's far more to life than what assumptions other people garner from my clothing.

Vaguelyclassical · 21/11/2025 18:59

Bjorkdidit · 21/11/2025 18:38

Just about everything on the shops currently is the wrong shape and in a colour I hate.

Dresses have no shape any more, it's like they've suddenly forgotten that women have waists and hips.

It's tiresome wading through a load of stuff that's slightly too short, long, wide or would be nicer in a different colour.

I'm seriously considering learning how to alter and make my own clothes because I'm tired at looking at badly sewn scraps of polyester thinking 'they want how much for it'?

Oh lord, yes! Let's crop trousers and then make them wide and thus make every short plump woman look dreadful and even shorter. (I'm not short, incidentally, just muttering.) Let's have mass produced clothing that no longer acknowledges the existence of things like darts to shape the garment. Let's put everybody in brown or lime green or hideous fuchsia pink or orange! Let's stop having shaped necklines but make tops with horrible wide necks that mean people with slim shoulders are always showing their bra straps in a non sexy way. Let's have wretched short boxy jumpers that are cruel to people who actually have waists as well as busts. Let's encourage women to subvert the effect of even a miraculously acquired pretty dress by wearing it with clompy trainers or Doc Martins or things that look like sand colored bedroom slippers with platforms.

You brought up people on the street making judgments, I was just responding to that. I think we do all get what you’re saying, just don’t agree that it’s a particularly meaningful form of self expression, or maybe it can be for some people but it isn’t for everyone.

How old are you OP?

When I was younger I definitely expressed myself through clothing, makeup, etc. As I've got older I have pared back quite a bit - my hair and clothing are much more natural, my clothes simpler (although nicer quality and I've figured out what actually suits me). I still want to look nice but I care much less about 'expressing myself' through my appearance and as a result don't buy as much.

This.

somanysugababes · 21/11/2025 19:03

Meh. I know a few people who look great but are boring as fuck. So their nice clothes are doing nothing other than show they have quite a lot of spare money and are good at putting outfits together. They’re still boring 🤷‍♀️ I could not give a shit how my friends dress, we are usually out dog walking or running so it’s irrelevant. I find your stance really odd.

My statement is: I'm doing the best I can, given that I'm still in mourning for the clothes of the 80's and 90's!

Maybe it just has something to do with general attractiveness, having good spatial awareness and decent self esteem.

For me personally, I like seeing myself in different styles and pulling them off. I don’t overly experiment with fashion but nothing I wear is thrown on/mismatched. I generally have categories eg work clothing which is generally fitted, casual clothing which tends to be baggy/oversized, and house/sleep clothes which are usually silk pj sets. I wouldn’t cross over ie I would not wear a tailored blazer casually, and I wouldn’t wear an oversized blazer to work. Different looks give off different impressions to others.
