To not really get why people don’t like clothes?

I’m not talking about specifically liking fashion or following certain trends.

I mean in general, clothes are a personal choice. They can express who you are, there’s do much choice out there. Why people say they don’t care what they wear?

Because there is too much choice and I don’t want to express myself maybe. Idk. I have an absolute and total lack of interest. Even as a kid I couldn’t be arsed picking out little outfits for my dolls. I wear basic comfy clothes that I don’t stand out in but I don’t like to look dowdy or clashing. I wish I found it easier to find things that fit nicely - maybe if I did I would enjoy clothes more.

LittleCapybara · 21/11/2025 18:10

Because some people prefer to express themselves in different ways?
Surely you haven’t made it to adulthood without realising everyone is different?

Dozer · 21/11/2025 18:12

Time involved in shopping.
Cost of clothes.
Shit selection of cloth, especially if you’re not thin.
Lower standards for men.

InterestedDad37 · 21/11/2025 18:12

I've always been totally into clothes! What I wear is really important to me, and I absolutely judge pretty much everyone on what they choose to put on 😂
If you don't care, or are unimaginative in your choice of clothes, or dull or scruffy, we probably won't get on 😂

TomatoSandwiches · 21/11/2025 18:13

I love clothes but a lot of items look nice but feel awful to wear, if I find something I like and it's comfortable I buy as much of it in as many colours as I can.

Icepop79 · 21/11/2025 18:13

Having been overweight, obese, morbidly obese and back to overweight, clothes shopping has been something I’ve hated my whole life. The only thing I’m interested in with clothing is how much it’s able to cover up or disguise the flab. I don’t ever think I look good in anything I ever wear, so I go for comfort.

Silvertulips · 21/11/2025 18:13

Because there’s too much choice, I don’t have a ‘look’ I wear what i feel comfy in - Satin skirts - no thanks been there done that and very unflattering!

Tight jeans, loose jeans, cropped jeans - I have them all, my favorite is a pair of Next stretch jeans -

Im fed up of being told what to wear - leave me alone!!

And the judge looks form the teens - get over yourselves.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 21/11/2025 18:14

Because there’s so little choice if you’re not the shape that’s ‘in’. I am an hour glass shape. The fashion at the moment is high neck with big puffy sleeves. I need v neck and slim sleeves to look anything other than a shapeless block. Can’t find it anywhere.

JudgeBread · 21/11/2025 18:14

I mean you answered your own question didn't you? Because they don't care. I'm sure there's lots of things you don't care about that others do.

WasThatACorner · 21/11/2025 18:14

Because 'expressing yourself' is about what people think of you and I make a choice to focus my energy elsewhere???

Planetmuff · 21/11/2025 18:14

Because they don’t care? I’m interested in other, maybe deeper things than aesthetics. My interests are politics, psychology, charities, the state of the world, animals, my kids and my job. I mostly wear clothes to keep my body covered and warm. I also don’t care what other people wear either. Each to their own. I understand why people like clothes, why don’t you understand why people don’t?

easytoremember · 21/11/2025 18:15

I find it so hard to find anything I like, I'm so fussy. So I end up wearing good quality lastables in classic colours, styles. Pretty boring wardrobe. But as long as I look clean, smell good, have some nice jewellry on, I don't really care.

Zempy · 21/11/2025 18:16

Because people are different…

Ahhhhhh this is really sad but it sounds like you've made great progress with your weightloss and honestly you should give dressing up a chance.

Jigglyhuffpuff · 21/11/2025 18:17

Because they're expensive. If you buy cheaper clothes then you just sit in guilt about the value chains and the polyester fibres that will lie in the earth for a millennia after you're gone. Because unless you spend a lot of money it all looks shit anyway. And then if you pay a lot of money on clothes your child will smear them with peanut butter and ruin them immediately.

SumUp · 21/11/2025 18:17

I expect most of us like clothes in the sense that they keep us warm / cover our privates 😁

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 21/11/2025 18:17

Not everyone cares about expressing who they are to others. We're all different and that includes people who wear clothes to reflect something about themselves to other people and people who wear clothes because it is socially unacceptable not to do so (not to mention cold!).

HeddaGarbled · 21/11/2025 18:17

They can express who you are

Ah, this is part of the problem, IMO.

They can express how you want other people to perceive you, and the resources you have access to, but not the essence of who you really are.

ThreeSixtyTwo · 21/11/2025 18:25

I find the concept of "expressing who I am by clothes" rather weird.

I don't like judging people by looks, and I consider the "expression by clothes" as inviting people to do exactly that.

Also what if who you really are is a Primark leggings and a jumper kind of person?

GooseyGandalf · 21/11/2025 18:31

I like clothes that are comfortable, familiar, don’t get in my way and don’t draw attention. I love those clothes. But they’re next to impossible to repeat by the time I realise how much I love them, and definitely impossible to replace.

Ideally I’d like clothes like they had centuries ago that were designed to last for years, had pleats that could be extended as bodies change, and didn’t need a lot of laundering. Those are clothes I could really like. But fast fashion? Meh.

TheAlertLimeSnail · 21/11/2025 18:32

How old are you OP?

When I was younger I definitely expressed myself through clothing, makeup, etc. As I've got older I have pared back quite a bit - my hair and clothing are much more natural, my clothes simpler (although nicer quality and I've figured out what actually suits me). I still want to look nice but I care much less about 'expressing myself' through my appearance and as a result don't buy as much.

Elsvieta · 21/11/2025 18:32

Always a bit baffled by the idea of "expressing who you are" through mass-produced objects, designed and manufactured by someone else. Better to express who you are with your own words and actions, I reckon. And wanting to express anything in particular to every stranger who glances you seems a bit self-involved.

I’m hourglass too. It sounds a bit “my diamond shoes are too tight” - my waist is just sooo small and I have a great arse and 28G boobs but the struggle is real. I’m very small too so sleeves and trousers are always too long and dresses are an unflattering length. It must be brilliant being about 5’7 and flat chested.

Bjorkdidit · 21/11/2025 18:38

Just about everything on the shops currently is the wrong shape and in a colour I hate.

Dresses have no shape any more, it's like they've suddenly forgotten that women have waists and hips.

It's tiresome wading through a load of stuff that's slightly too short, long, wide or would be nicer in a different colour.

I'm seriously considering learning how to alter and make my own clothes because I'm tired at looking at badly sewn scraps of polyester thinking 'they want how much for it'?
